I think the mental state of my character is bugged. Whatever I do it always stays slightly below the minimum happiness meter and often goes down to "depressed" for no reason, and the effects make it really hard to get anywhere in the game.

Just do push ups and light exercises in between minigames. That should increase your strength and endurance. You'll see the buff begin to work within a few days.
The college questline you need a lot of money and depending on what quest line you finish in will effect your currency income. So chose one of the STEM field sub quests. They will make the college quest line worth it.
Marriage DLC is being postponed later and later with every new patch. I suggesting holding off.
