If Dr. Mario hadn't been in, Ice Climbers and Snake wouldn't magically get in. He's not "stealing" a slot from anyone. The only reason he's in is because he was going to be an alt but they decided to give him his own slot to bring back how Mario played pre-FLUDD.

Sakurai did not want to put effort into making a new character for Kerfuffle, so he just tweaked an existing character in Kerfuffle, which was infinitely many times easier than porting, remodeling, tweaking for a brand new game, engine, meta, new voices, animations, and a billion other things that fit into the game.

If it's so fucking easy to port characters from Brawl, Wolf wouldn't have been cut and we'd have even more retro stages. Enough of the slot shit. As much as I miss the two characters, Dr. Mario and Dark Pit have nothing to do with it.

Now it has picked up, but another problem is that when people buy Nintendo, they really don't buy much more than Nintendo.
A big part is hardware differences between the Wii U and other consoles. Nintendo is able to make fantastic games for the Wii U because they always are very good with their own hardware.
Third parties want to make the most profit for the lowest price.
That usually involves ports, which will limit the game on other consoles due in part to lazy development, so it's easier for them to avoid the console.
It's a shame, but nothing new.
There will be some good third party games for the platform, but don't expect them to be ports.
