I still play as him, but it still kind of sucks that he's pretty much always going to be trash highly outclassed by most characters. Not to mention that he's even less fun to play in the event that the occasional earth-shattering lag inevitably occurs.

It makes me sad that I can transfer over any of the skills I learned using Ness to another character like Zelda for example, and get the same results for 20% of the effort. At least in the 64 game you could ARGUE that he was decent, he's just gotten shittier and shittier since then.

Don't get me wrong, enthusiasts of Earthbound. A little autistic, yet fairly objective rant.

I don't get the appeal of Ness character, because he is silent protagonist. How can You affiliate / get attached to it if he shows no character? I mean Flint portrayal is more vivid as You can see him just being chilled, tipping his cowboy hat and and getting authentically mad after hearing his wife's fate. Lucas goes the same way as Ness, he is just blank.

Now "being blank" is not an accusation. This is just how it goes, a standard for many video games and it's acceptable. Pretty much the same reason as I don't understand why Gordon Freeman is put frequently in top#10 video game characters.

I do however understand endless topics about his stripes on shirt. This is very important matter to discuss.

I do however acknowledge fictional setting, storytelling and the other characters present in Mother 2, 3. It's just very solid to not see it and appreciate someone's effort at it.


Other thing to discuss however. I see often various discussion and general disfavor for "plot over gameplay" element in recent video games.
Do you see that problem in Earthbound?
Are you hypocritical to shit on new games and favor Earthbound while they share the same issue?

I Earthbound is one of my favourite games of all time, and I agree, he doesn't have much of a definable character other than what you can loosely glean from what he does in the game and his interactions with other characters, but it doesn't amount to anything really interesting. I think people prefer everything else about the rest of the game rather than the main characters specifically and just see Ness as a mascot for the game.

Also while I think the gameplay is pretty lacking, the game keeps it entertaining with all the weird enemies you fight and the things they do. I think it's also more the world around the story that people like rather than the story itself, it's a pretty generic "kids fight a cosmic evil" story, just with great writing and settings and side-characters. The game also allows you to wander around and explore the game at your own pace rather than yank you through it and make you stare at a chain of pre-rendered events, which I think is what people are really complaining about when they say a game focusses on story. It doesn't feel like the gameplay is sacrificed for the story.

You're missing the entire point and comparing the wrong aspects completely. A game like The Last of Us, isn't the same as Earthbound. I could understand if you were to relate it to final fantasy, but the game relies mostly on the settings, music, humor, etc. The game takes you many places, you come from what is just your pajamas and a cracked bat, to being able to level tanks with psychic energy.

It's essentially the same as asking why people would like Game & Watch considering he "has no character development" even though he represents far more than just one simple thing. Ness is pretty much just an avatar that "represents" the game as a whole, if you think that people are attracted to Ness because he's a deep and meaningful character with complex traits and faults, you're missing the point entirely.

Not sure how this is hard to understand though since this can technically be said for just about any famous video game character that didn't originate from a comic book or TV series ex: Micky Mouse, Mario, Link, Megaman, Pacman

Super strong and fast aerials, to the point that he is almost unfair in the air

Dash attack has a huge hitbox and his hurtbox is far behind it so its hard to punish

Grabs have very good knockback

Pk fire shenanigans were you have to roll back if you do anything else he gets a free grab or smash attack, so he can stop ground approaches easily

Also he can absorb projectiles in a defensive campy metagame i dont need to explain how this helps him out vs Zoning which is expected to be sm4sh strongest playstyle

Don't forget that if you smash into a wall with PK Thunder 2, you have a small window to use PK Thunder again. So what does this mean?

Basically if you're fighting on a one of those boxed FD stages (Yoshi's Island, Mushroomy Kingdom FD, etc...) and you're REALLY far down to the point PKT2 can't save you, angle yourself slightly up and into the wall, you revive your PKT2 and can make it back almost guaranteed.

I used to think Ness was garbage in Smash 4 day one, but I'm starting to believe he's at least mid-tier. This is the best iteration of Ness so far. I can only hope Nintendo makes an Earthbound remake in the future so he'd be relevant for Smash 5 and escape the cuts.
