Besides the whole faceplate thing, N3DS has the SNES-styled buttons while XL lacks them.

Plus i like that i can fit it in my pocket, while i'm fairly sure i wouldn't be able to with the XL.

All in all, i'd say just go for whatever you prefer. In my case, just the regular N3DS will do for me.

If you want some reasoning:

3DS XL + CPP looks like an abomination and you have to pay extra for that privilage. The CPP also needs it's own batteries, so that adds to the cost.

N3DS is all built in so no extra costs, and you can play all the new exclusive games. Plus MH4 will be out by the time the N3DS is out too.
