>Be well into your teens
>Playing this game on a emulator
>cry like a fucking bitch at the ending
>Feel like shit for the next day or so
Is it wrong to feel like this over a pokemon game?
holy shit i just beat the game and now i see it gets posted here , i thought the ending of red was better though.
is there a difference between sky and the other ds games? dark and something idk.
One of my favorite games of all time.
Though I was like 12-14 when it came out or something(don't remember when it came out) and I was/am a huge pokefag, so naturally I too cried at the ending
I was only like eleven when I played the game and I wasn't sad at the ending at all. Same goes for Explorers. Good games, though.
Funny enough the story in Gates actually got me a bit choked up while the game itself wasn't quite as good.
Why was grass so shitty in this game? Its like they had it out for you the whole time.
>Hey I see you are on the run, go into this giant ass volcano and get one shotted by moltres
>Finally beat the volcano eh? Well have fun fighting Articuno who will just one shot you with blizzard
>You managed to beat that huh? Well now you get to go through a 40 floor lava dungeon and fight groudon
>If you managed to get past all that without shooting yourself you now have to go through an ariel based dungeon and fight that fuckass Rayquaza
Get good m8, I didn't have to grind a single level and even then I thought it was rather simple. It helps that MD plays like an easy roguelike and I was piplup and my partner a vulpix though. Some pokemon like skitty (is that what it's called?) are pretty weak in this game and you can get screwed over.
>mfw my partner was treecko
>mfw he died so many times against shit like moltres and articuno that I had him just stand in a corner and I just solo'd the boss errytime
>I horded all of the gummies for myself
>Even though as the player character you dont actually need any points in IQ
>My partner was a stupid fuck the whole game while i was smarter than alakazam
>Was a charizard
>Ate max gummies
>Could literally break through walls and carve my own path
Yeah, some of the characters were alright too.
He never told her.
>don't need IQ as the player
>DON'T NEED IQ AS THE PLAYER
welI assume you mean RB
IQ is useless as fuck to the player in TDS because they made IQ trees different for each pokemon and fucking palkia is the only one that gets Super Mobile.
There aren't even Gummis in GTI. God why is that game such a fucking abomination on all fronts except gameplay
>IT'S A MONSTER HOUSE
I-I didn't like those items anyway.
I felt the same way with Hey, You! Pikachu!'s ending. Shit was fucking sad.
>tfw nobody believed me that there even was an ending until years later when I showed them it on YouTube
>beat explorers of sky
>there's a second campaign
FUCK PRIMAL DIALGA.
Actually it's not as useless if you swap out your 'leader' later but still bring along your 'self' as an AI.
Otherwise yeah, TDS IQ is kinda wonky otherwise. GTI was so bad thought beyond animations and looks.
>meeting Primal Dialga after two Monster Houses
>Playing Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2: Explorers of Darkness
>Expecting mediocre story-line like one
My feels. Even more feels In Sky.
>get up to dialga after perish song spam and passing temporal tower as a fucking bulbasaur
>ROAR OF TIME
Who is the best partner and why is it Skitty?
Honestly? I think the 4 move limit is more true to source, and I loved making up link combo's and the like with that limitation.
If there's still a fight that brings me chills, it's Dialga's fight. The entire lead up towards that is depressing as hell, and then the fight itself is pretty insane.
>tfw Explorers of Sky's Adventure Log doesn't pass through save files
>tfw Gate to Infinity is so casualised, you can lose to the final boss, only to be spawned right back at his doorstep with no loss of items/money
>tfw the final boss isn't even a pokemon
this is more terrifying to me than actual horror games
It takes a lot to associate music with pain, suffering and losing everything you had
RB's story was alright but it felt kind of small, and wasn't as serious as TDS
>having access to all your moves at once
What? That wasn't the case in any of the games. Are you just talking about the improved shortcut system? And leveling moves was good, as were some other improvements, but there were many steps back too. Like overall difficulty and the horrendously small amount of meaningful post-game content, or some of the good new features being locked to said post-game with nothing to motivate you to actually play it.
The plot, characters, and things like that were fine. On par with Explorers.
Fun fact, explorers had the best outlaw segment in any game I ever played
I always try to have a meowth on my team, for dat payday megadosh
>GTI's failure means we'll never get another pmd game
>there will never be a WiiU PMD
>keep losing against Dialga
>grind levels for two days straight
>me and partner both lvl 55
>learn you can throw seed at him
>bit him in 4 turns
Also fuck this game for not letting you evolve during the main story.
>tfw the final boss isn't even a pokemon
>The player encounters this creature immediately after battling Kyurem. If defeated, the player can re-challenge the Bittercold without having to redo the dungeon. When re-challenged, the Bittercold will also keep the same amount of HP from when the player was last defeated.
>There aren't even Gummis in GTI
I don't mind that to be honest.
But they replaced it with an even worse system. Why would you let rng deicide what skills you can get?
They had a story? I like the games and all but outside of the escape segment and the gengar thing there wasn't much of a story.
I remember i played one of these games. The bosses were the three legendary birds and rayquaza after the fucking tower that was so unbelievably frustrating holy shit,
Was that the first one? Are the sequels worth emulating?
dude the spinoff pokemon games have always been better. the only reason I even liked pokemon was because of the secret bases in gen 3
fuck I love pokemon rangers, why did that have to die
>Hunting the Seven Wonders in lategame
>Get to floor 39
>lose all special items
That was the first one. Explorers of Sky is your best bet if you want to play another in the series - the games progress like this:
Red/Blue Rescue Team
Explorers of Dark/Time/Sky
Gates to Infinity (only worth it if you want a good story + good music)
First PMD game was good, but the bosses and the general plot of the game needed work.
The only bullshit boss in PMD is Primal Dialga.
Yes, that was the first one.
I only managed to beat Rayquaza because I was playing as Squirtle and somehow found an Ice Beam TM on the final level
Also the Explorers sequels are awesome, Gates to Infinity less so.
I got the feels like a bitch when Chatot saved everyone from Kabutops. I really liked the characters in Explorers of Sky.
The entire thing about Gengar and Gardevoir was that
It is suggested Gengar was at one point and time a human you knew, who also became a pokemon, hench his endless distaste, but unwillingness to let you outright go. Gardevoir was one of the pokemon you had when you where a human as it sacrificed itself for you. This is why it's utterly depressing when she comes back and has no memory's of anything.
Some idiots will tell you the sequals are better but they are lying. Its the same thing with cheesier writing, annoying ass restrictions and character, and less options. If you did t like the first you will hate the sequals
The whole thing was that
Gengar was the Gardevoir's master, who was cursed into being a pokemon by Ninetales. It's outright stated in the post-game, and it explains why he's so eager to get you kicked out- he wants someone else to take the blame for him fucking up.
So anons, what pokemon are you according to the test?
>can't evolve your pokemon until there's absolutely nothing left to do
>every single plot related anything doesn't let you bring recruits with you
>foot minigame (granted this ends eventually)
>no friend zones
>a ton of legendaries don't have their own dungeon and are extremely rare encounters in normal dungeons
>nerfed IQ system
explorers is so much better in every other possible sense, but all of the above just ruins it so much for me
from a purely gameplay perspective, it's a great game
but everything else is completely awful
Just wait until the game tries to jerk tears out of you
trust me, the "sad" music will be burnt into your mind if you play it to the end
>posting the inferior blue rescue team versions
Yes there's a difference, and it's noticeable
that test is so skewed, it should have given you the same questions each time so it would even be possible to get any pokemon
I got Treecko most of the time in rescuers, tododile in time/darkness and phanoy in sky
I played as a Pikachu and I linked together discharge and thunderbolt.
Discharge hits everyone in the room, and thunderbolt hits everyone around me. Those near me where almost guaranteed to be dead.
True horror was when a Porygon-Z kept spamming agility until it could attack 4 times in a turn.
Torchic and Pikachu
>Explorers of Sky
Shinx and Skitty
>Gates to Infinity
Oshawott and Snivy
I never forgot my first result. I got squirtle and beat the game all the way through as him.
>mfw spamming ice beam on Rayquaza kept him frozen the entire fight
>Porygon-Z at the last dungeon
>"Porygon-Z used Discharge"
>mfw I'm a Mudkip.
Hell yes, best track in the game
after the credits:
I'm curious how a Gen 6 PMD might work, what with Mega Evolutions.
Fucking christ, that music. I'd forgotten how sad it makes me.
One of the GOAT pokemon games, for sure. Made me realize how big a part Pokemon played in my childhood and how invested I am in it in that regard.
>yfw primal Dialga uses Roar of Time
well given the recent track record, you would only be able to play as gen6 pokemon, and anything that can mega evolve
If system limitations are seriously an issue and would still keep the game from having a full world and all pokemon, I'd want it to either be WiiU or n3DS
Yeah, a real damn shame. While I didn't give much of a shit, could have been fun to see how evolving would have played out.
correcting myself a bit here, all the videos I quoted as being inferior were uploaded by a user on youtube that butchered their mixing/sound quality, as seen here:
>>264089473(alternate upload of the same song)
BrawlBRSTMs3 is his name, and don't click on his soundtrack videos.
I just cheesed it by stocking up on x-eye seeds
Wow someone came up with valid criticism. I have to disagree to an extent with the first point made because you can evolve before you can do the optional challenging content (the Zero isles, that 100 floor tower, etc.) and the foot minigame didn't bother me much personally, but I think we can agree with the rest.
So what do they need to do to make a good mystery dungeon game again? In my opinion
>friendzones were neat for visually growing your team
>all pokemon need to be available in game
>stuff like the palkia arc at endgame in Explorers of Darkness
>evolution restricted in the way it was for Rescue team, explorers overdid it by a longshot
>story that gives you feels
>Town that is fun and larger than some of the new games
I would like them to go back to pixels personally. I dont know, the early games felt so fucking good but now they are halfassed spinoffs rather than well made roguelites
One idea I saw on /vp/ at one point was playing off the RPG archetypes of the Kalos starters, the three being your main party with you choosing which one your character becomes while the other two are partners with their own personalities, so that depending on your starter story events will play out slightly differently between the personalities of your two partners and how they clash with each other and you the blank slate.
there's signs of abandoned human civilization in all the games and that's where they come from
why would they have to cut corners because of that?
it's made by an entirely different team
the only reasons I think was because it was a fairly early 3DS game, and early console games are never at their full potential, or they just didn't have the budget or time to flesh it out as much as the previous games AND have it in 3d
I would be perfectly fine with them reusing the XY assets for pokemon models in a new PMD if it means that can put effort into the actual game
>play explorers of sky on an emulator
with save states
>get far in
>play gates to infinity
>a little easy, but still had fun
>play explorers of sky on an actual ds
>barely get past first dungeon because partner keeps dying and using all of my reviver seeds and needs to be healed every turn
Add more unique gimmick dungeons, like the Zero isles or Destiny tower. But, not just "You're reset to lvl 1", have something more creative or interesting, like your moveset or typing each floor is randomized or each floor you advance you go down a level (for that dungeon alone)
The game was rushed out the door so there was only five starters, and having a personality test for five choices is just silly.
Though at this point there'd be so many starters the personality test wouldn't cover them all. I'd solve that by having each nature give you a pool of selections.
Because they wanted to get the game out in Japan before XY were announced.
I always thought the test added personality.
>Too many people bitched about that test
Well fuck those people anon, I hope they bring back the test if they make a new Mystery Dungeon.
>Play Explorers of Darkness
>Cry like a bitch
>Play Explorers of the Sky
>Cry like a bitch again
>Play Grovyle's story
>I got no more tears left to shed
It was cool how the game outright stated it was actually Arceus that brought you and everyone else back to life and Dialga just put up a good word for you.
>Though at this point there'd be so many starters the personality test wouldn't cover them all. I'd solve that by having each nature give you a pool of selections.
That's not a bad idea anon, although I'm sure people would complain about not getting to be a certain starter because they got x nature.
>Go to next floor in late game dungeon
>Entire floor is just one massive room
>It's a Monster House!
The ending of Explorers of Darkness actually made me shed a tear. I was seriously surprised that a Pokemon game had a substantial plot, much less with twists, much much less with legitimately sad moments.
/vp/ called me a fag when I mentioned this.
Now if you go onto /vp/ and mention the Mystery Dungeon games they'll cry like bitches too.
>every enemy know roar of time
>Limited amount of moves per floor, use them all up and you lose
>just one floor but you have to survive as long as possible
>items regularly spawn and types of enemies vary
The gameplay didnt boil down to
>let enemy get into position
>circle like fucking crazy and try again if you mess up
The counting system was retarded, filing up the bar was far superior
>So...I'm guessing the Explorers OVA is kinda shit?
Those animated episodes?
Nah, they're pretty good. Always wished they made a series out of em just to explore the world, and get more of the game.
>Enter a giant square map with a monster house
>One of the pokemon that spawns has a move that hits the whole map
>You are on the opposite side of the room from the stairs
There is nothing hard about stunning an enemy and circling it, and thats what it boiled down to in the first game, shit like Steelix was untouchable outside of a stun
the definition of artificial difficulty; its only hard because you need to tear up your screen then wait for another chance, especially the lame shit with all 3 bosses at the end. The bosses in Shadows of Almia were much better because they could interrupt you and force you to find small openings, not wait and do it all at once
>Doesn't like Chatot
Fuck you bitch he was the real mvp and a true bro
Anyone play Guardian Signs?
Man, was did that game have a huge roster, I especially like that you can
capture the creation trio and Arceus. Goddamn, half the screen was practically filled with hyperbeams and shit and fuck his multiple health bars.
So what partner did you guys choose?
I chose Chikorita.
Anyone else enjoy how some of the moves in the regular game were much better in MD? Like Fury Swipes or any multi hit move doing a ton of damage or speed boosting moves and evasion boosting moves were a godsend to have?
Pikachu can use discharge, I think. But you can't really recruit him till after the story. And everyone can learn vacuum cut. Vacuum cut's damage is fixed at 20 if memory serves me right.
You shoulda messed around with its IQ skills a bit. Switch off the move exclusive one.
>oh boy I get to play as bulbasaur I sure do hope that not every boss in the game is super effective against grass types!
I liked how in PMD, any move is useful and not just the shit that only does over 100 damage
In every Mystery Dungeon I played (Blue, Time, Sky).
Am I the only one who thought the Rescue teams had an astronomically better postgame?
>Meteor cave and Deoxys
>The entire sequence of dungeons to see Ho-oh
It was a lot less story driven, but it felt like there were far more epic challenges to tackle and legendaries to recruit.
I think that was kind of the point in a way. They wanted to please all of the kiddies with an entry level EZ mode story and then all of the actual challenge came from the post game content when every dungeon was 100 floor minimum.
>find a "Gone Pebble"
>throw it away because fake item, no idea what it does
>random pokemon picks it up and uses it
>screen goes black
>he remembers his old friend
>holds back tears
>unleashes the power of true friendship
>fucks my party over
>King of Jews
>Tfw stealing from his store in a mystery dungeon
>Find his store in a dungeon
>Leave it until find stairs
>Stand right on them but don't go down
>Hear the music start
>Quickly pick everything up and leave
Get fucked Kecleon.
nah dude most are pretty quality uploads. just the Red Rescue Team uploads are ass. Blue seems to be fine. I guess whoever uploaded it on their website had a shit file. I refered to it as BrawlCustomMusic because of the site they're based in.
>A food item that fully restores PP of all of a Linoone's moves and restores 5 Belly. Look-alike for Max Elixir.
Man, those look-alike items were pretty creative when you think about it.
You know that really makes me wish there was a special story involving your partner's journey alone. I imagine the final dungeon of that story could be them climbing a tower to meet Arceus promising to bring them back only to erase the partner's memory of ever having that encounter.
The only problem would be inconsistent levels and moves after "You" come back.
alright, well here's a better question
At the end of the first one, your buddy becomes a normal buddy, and that destroyed gameplay for me from then on. Does that happen again in sky or does your bro stay your special bro?
>Would these games have been even better if they didn't feature Pokemon characters?
You mean if it were a Mystery Dungeon game?
>get Cyndaquil, "timid"
>shy to begin with, start to become proud of being introverted
>make no friends throughout school, become misanthropic
>realize like every other faggot on 4chan that I need people skills to succeed in life
If there was a new PMD game, how would mega evolutions work? Webm sorta related.
It improved a lot of things from the previous couple of DS games, added new content, four new starters, new shops, secret bazaar which is a life saver on occasions, lose half of your cash instead of all when k.o. in mazes and many more
I want to believe but I have to be certain, does he still follow you around uniquely and have dialog when you're in town for example? Or in situations where other followers just don't show up?
Cause if that's so, then I'm sold.
Friendly reminder that this abomination killed the Mystery Dungeon spinoff.
Gates is alright. A step down from past games but still enjoyable if you stay open-minded.
Different guys but there is no doubt they would add them in.
Humans from other worlds turned into Pokemon are much stronger than regular Pokemon because the laws of the universe don't apply to them.
Yeah that irked me a bit they have you fighting a feral Dialga and kicking it's ass with non-evolved pokemon also that primal Dialga theme.
This you know suffering that shit was unfucking bearable.
