It's really not worth that much money and minecraft already reached it's peak. I have no idea how Microsoft manage to make more money than they lose.
what does this mean for the PS4 version?
>It's really not worth that much money and minecraft already reached its peak
>it's not really worth that much money
>already reached its peak
>not worth much money
>at its peak
kek, minecraft was always shit.
They did the right thing making tomb raider exclusive. They should've bought rights to resident evil, battle field or something major.
Street fighter 4
i still feel bad that notch started because of OUR interest in his game, and then abandoned us and our legitimate criticisms in favor of the reddit hugbox where nobody will ever tell him he's wrong
all meaningful things done by mankind are done in the name of money. even shit like the LHC that's supposedly "strictly for knowledge" only exists because conglomerates want to seize that knowledge for new ways of profit. why is this still surprising to you?
You really doubt the ability of children to lap this shit up don't you?
>Microsoft won't be able to make any money on it
Well, it gave him 2 billions, so I'm sure he's not crying too much.
Also, what the fuck. 2 billions, at a point where anybody who would ever want Minecraft on any platform that they own has it? How the fuck is that going to pay itself back? It's not like they shit out success games after games, they only have that one who's a really big thing. That is such a bizarre buy at such a ridiculous price.
Congrats on Notch for winning life and contributing to MS' long line of recent dumb, dumb gaming ideas

>MOJANG DOESN'T OWN MINECRAFT NOTCH DOES

This is obviously what they're going to do as most people who are interested in the game has bought the game already. Forcing micro-transaction "DLC" blocks, items, monster packs and such will create enormous revenue for M$. Especially when those are Microsoft exclusive for a month or two.
You might not buy their shit, but speak with a ten year old kid and you can bet he'll beg his parents up, down, left and right to acquire those DLCs. They'll make a fortune on that and Minecraft merchandise. Think of it like Lego, it's gonna sell like a motherfucker.
>$2.5 Billion on Mojang
A game company that only has 3 games with only 1 notable game. (Minecraft)
Unless they pull out "Minecraft 2 : Electric Boogaloo", the popularity and community of the game is only going to go down.
Buying the company would be reasonable but not at $2.5 billion.
Though Microsoft has already made micro transactions for the game, so I guess if people keep buying skins and textures then they can profit.
It's not like Minecraft is only going to be playable on Microsoft hardware, there is still little reason to buy an Xbone unless you are a helmet wearing 11 year old.
Isn't maojang a complete flash in the pan anomaly? Notch and maojang have no track record of quality or success besides a beta becoming viral. I'd be hard pressed to attribute much of their work to it'd popularity. Is Microsoft attempting to assassinate minecraft? Attempt to wring the cash out of mine crafts dying corpse? Or, the least likely, attempt to use maojang for creative development ?
>Microsoft make Minecraft 2
>kids force their moms to buy anything titled Minecraft 2, no matter what
>it's shit and even the most severe Minecraft autists hate the new one
A clusterfuck of tortanic proportions is headed for us.
Same. I guess you have to be autistic to enjoy it. It's also the worst optimized game I've ever tried.
I have a question.
How much would other companies cost?
Like how much would a buy for Ninja Theory, Insomniac, Sumo Digital, Obsidian Cost?
Couldn't they have bought like 3 of these companies instead?
No, Mojang is of no use to minecraft, they were buying solely the Minecraft name. Microsoft will run this series into the ground. Either that, or Minecraft 2 will be in development hell.
Earlier this year, I worked at a hotel, and I swear I saw at 4 or 5 new kids sitting in the lobby or in the lounge playing Minecraft on their tablets all day every day. That shit is like crack to young children.
$2.5 Billion? Those morons ended up paying half a motherfucking billion more for that shit? Are you for real?
no they will not, we all know how this will play out, ms will play goody goody with sony and apple until the license is up for renewal and then they will say "we did not feel there was a point in keep it on so many platforms when we can have a more streamlined experience on xbox one, 360, and pc" screen cap this post you know it to be true, unless notch gave sony and apple life time licenses they will be delisted when the license expires
So rather than spending $2.5 billion on multiple games for the xbone, ms would rather spend it on buying a shitty game that is already on many platforms and a dev that hasn't released any finished products? Looks like xbox sure has a promising future.
> Creative force behind what made it leaves the same day
We sell those where I work
The first time I saw them I was awed at the fact people can't just fucking use a wikipedia, specially when most phones can use the internet
I always crush them in my MHE
>get 2.5$ billion fucking dollars
>nah guys it's totally not the money, I just can't handle the responsibility
>probably going on vacation for the rest of his life
At least don't lie about the fucking reason
>microshit making good decisions fucking ever.
Nope. I think the last good idea they had was windows 7 and I pirated that shit anyways. From a company that releases a good OS every 5 years they sure do know how to suck a mean dick.
>How much would other companies cost?
It really depends on the jurisdiction where both companies are located.
Issues with trade departments and employment protection for workers, pensions, liabilities and assets, legal status of company directors, legal due diligence, insurance, how the company is acquired(merger, business transfer, asset sale, share sale) etc
If Notch gets even 10% of a billion dollars in the next 3 years he'll be a lucky man. The paper work that these sort of deals require take half a decade or more to pass through the legal system that involves international trade.
just think about all the games microsoft could have funded the development of with that money
every franchise you ever loved could have been brought back
a hundred new franchises could be born
Xbox one could have literally hundreds of amazing exclusives made and go down in history as the greatest console of all time cementing microsofts place in the industry
instead autismblocks 2 will be on xbox
They dont need to make the money back from minecraft purchases alone.
Its to make the xbox brand stronger.
If they start messing with minecraft to make the xboner version the best one then kids around the world will want to have that specific version.
If they buy the boner for that then the trojan horse is planted and you got a new generation of Xbox fans after they managed to alienate the previous ones.
what if...just IF microsoft buys minecraft and adds a lot of new shit to it?
Wasn't the Kinect debacle enough to make you realize they don't give a flying fuck about hardcore gamers? They just want filthy casual money, and Autismcraft would had been a great IP for that, if they had payed like a half of what they ended up paying.
>minecraft user created mods as paid DLC
>xbone bombing so hard they have to gamble $2.5 billion on a single IP
>give low budget companies like piranha bytes/Larian Studios $100M for them to make the best game of their lives, and make them exclusive
>suddendly 25 new exclusives
>give $2.5B to the most overrated developer ever for 1 game.
wasnt the kinect debacle enough to show them the casual shit is not worthwhile
autismblocks would have been good if they got it for 500m a couple of years ago before it was available on every other device ever
so Microsoft spent $2.5 billion for Minecraft rights. how the hell will they get back that cash and profit too ? so they will stop making free updates for current Minecraft and just start making Minecraft 2.0 ? and sell DLC every month ?
>billions of dollars invested in xbone development and launch
>bombs so hard even the Wii U is outselling it
>desperately need something that sells consoles no matter the cost
It's the last straw
fuck you guys
if microsoft actually fixes this game then what
its not like minecraft is the pinnacle of game development- it has had no meaningful updates since oct 2010
what if minecraft becomes the game we sought under microsofts desperate attempt to stay relevant
They don't care about profiting off this IP. The main point was keeping it off of other platforms and not having the game become open source.
They've been fighting a war on open source licenses in software calling it a cancer for decades now. The idea that the most popular video game loved by hundreds of millions of young adults could become public domain and open source made them shit their pants and buy it outright. They would have gladly spent 20 billion to avert the disaster of having an entire generation become interested in open source software.
Yes, but minecraft? Why would anyone buy it on XBONE?
>everybody probably have it already because it can run on a toaster
>no easy mods
Do they really expect people to by an XBONE just for that?
Are they going to market it with the usual "now in your living room, big tv, couch" arguments they usually have and expect people to fall for that? I just can't comprehend.
Microsoft can actually act as a great resource for developers. They have a track record of keeping developers on schedule and under budget.
Case in point: Destiny.
Compare Halo to Destiny, for example.
>Live in feminazi shithole where they send men to prison for buying prostitutes
Nothing because those niggers cant do shit on their own and are nothing but money sponges
The western industry besides some good devs in Europe is the embodiment of cancer.
Nah, they totally gave up on them at this point. Nintendo kept publishing games for their core fanbase even during the Wii phase, so it's not the same.
Exactly, casual gaming is worthwhile to make some quick cash while the fad remains, not to invest such a ridiculous amount of money in it.
But, but they already have it. It's not like there's gonna be a sequel or anything. Unless they clump together a bunch of mods and sell it as a special edition or something, then I can see it happening.
How are Microsoft planning to monetise this? I presume they can't pull the game from PS4 or PS3.
Are they going to make a sequel? Would it ever provide more value than Minecraft already does modded? Why didn't they just make a superior clone with their own IP for much cheaper?
Imagine if they worked really hard on the world generation and made proper river or mountain formations, more varied biomes. Something to inspire a broader scope of creativity...
There's so much they didn't do with Minecraft it's embarrassing and Mojang should be ashamed. They never even supported modding properly.
You're kidding me right?
Minecraft is the new Tetris, it's here to stay as long as they keep tweaking and updating it for modern audiences. I guarantee kids who aren't even born yet will play minecraft at some point, it's THE building/crafting/creating game. It's like saying LEGO reached it's peak 10 years after they created lego. Trust me, Minecraft is here to stay.
All we had to do is steal code from Infiminer.
Fuck this gay Earth.
Minecraft IP is worth money and will sell for many years.
Oculus hasn't proven itself to be a money maker yet and could be made obsolete overnight when a better product comes a long. Which will happen.
>It's not like there's gonna be a sequel or anything.
Of course there's gonna be a sequel, and it'll be bone exclusive. That's the whole point. The problem is the absurdly amount of money they paid for it.
>How are Microsoft planning to monetise this?
It's a long term investment.
All those kids that are currently addicted to Minecraft will grow up and Microsoft will be there to make more money out of them.
Based on what? The fact that you got tired of it?
There are children yet to have even been CONCEIVED that will be playing minecraft, five or six years from now. This shit will be the next Pokemon.
The worst thing is that its worth 350 million dollars.
Notch probably gave them a number he thought impossible and when it was too late to take it off the table, MS bought it.
"Well. I guess I'm going to take a permanent vacation"
They should have bought it before minecraft was sold in a billion copies. Whatever I hope they give minecraft to people who actually care and I can continue playing in on Windows.
You guys forgot about the whole Minecraft Realms shit. Plenty of people are willing to pay for a little private server on a shitty cloud in Sweden or wherever.
>they've spend enough money to make 50 AAA games
>just to buy a game that's already on their platform
Literally why. Wouldn't it be better to make 50 exclusive XBONE games if you have 2,5 billion to "invest"?
All those kids will grow up, get into game development and make better games than minecraft.
Those were my hopes for what Mojang would do with it. I don't trust Microsoft to do it either. I don't know what they can bring to the IP.
Why hasn't anyone made a better minecraft than minecraft yet? Imagine if they got the physics of stuff right, for a start. The way water works can't be the best solution.
>Why hasn't anyone made a better minecraft than minecraft yet?
There are plenty of Minecraft clones out there, some even open-source. It's that they don't have a professional staff
LOLmaintaining it and an unlimited budget like Minecraft does.
but they never even bothered to make things easier for the modders. People were begging for an API for years.
Fuck I'm just annoyed that Mojang have been valued so much when they were at best negligent, at worst, talentless and incapable.
Well that's it I guess. It thrives on the modding scene. Would a minecraft sequel really work?
Does minecraft really have a decade or more in it?
I don't think they will make a Minecraft 2.
I think Minecraft itself is a thing now, like Lego, or Tetris. People will just play it for many many years to come. They'll just tweak it and update it. They might make special versions like Halo Minecraft or something but Minecraft is going to just be it's own thing.
>Does minecraft really have a decade or more in it?
Without an actual mod plugin support with user-friendly scripting? I doubt it.
Especially since mods now are hard-coded and every game update breaks them.
There are laws against predatory pricing and dumping. Selling xbones $100 cheaper would result much more money lost in anti trust legal battles, lawsuits and the PR disaster of being considered to be involved monopolistic in practices again.
Right, it's not a one hit wonder but a classic that will stand the test of time. We know this because it's been out for a whole 4 years already. More than enough time to extrapolate how popular it'll be decades into the future. I mean gaming fads are simply unheard of, you have farmville, angry and flappy bird games that are worth billions as IPs years later.
>release a graphically unimpressive game coded in Java with extreme appeal to autists and people with other disabilities
>promise to support it thoroughly by releasing updates every Friday
>take a vacation every other weekend
>walk away with 2.5 billion smackaroos
This is the future we chose.
it would probably flop
people don't like change, Minecraft has such a solid base that people just want little changes here and there, and they'll take it from there with their own creativity and modding.
Yeah, but they toe the EA line from a few years ago. Acquire and incorporate. Churn out the IP.
They would never encourage a AAA studio to create something new though. They would just want more of what's currently big.
But they are creating new AAA studios.
>There are people who think Microsoft doesn't have enough cash to do both.
So, if they can throw 2.5 billion on notch, why not just buy some other companies and make their games exclusive?
In fact i'm still surprised there are companies that don't belong to either MS, Sony or Nintendo.
>Xbox division is still in the red
>Minecraft has made $240 million in 2012
>Minecraft has made $124 million in 2013
>Microsoft spent 5 times the earnings of Minecraft to buy Mojang
This is honestly the most retarded business decision ever made.
>I wonder what would happen if 'Lego 2' was released
It was called Lego Technic and out of it came Mindstorm and Bionicle.
>it would probably flop
It was a huge success and spawned several other successful brands as mentioned above.
Eh MS has spent worse
hell they lost all their earnings from the 360 05-09 from buying a tech company that was actually a bust for them.
The sad part for me that is that no matter how much they spend they'll never run out and if they truly desperately needed money they'll just call apple for a quick buck.
Fair enough. Anyway I want to back off from smack talking microsoft too much because it's probably not fair. It's just how I see it.
My favourite Microsoft games don't really exist anymore. AoE etc.
I´m happy that owners of the shitbox finally have a game to play on it.
Just be happy for those casuals for ones, will you /v/?
>>Microsoft spent 5 times the earnings of Minecraft to buy Mojang
It's actually not too unreasonable. The will make their money back in at least 5 years or so (From the movie, and LEGOs and merch)
Although, MS is retarded and says THEY WILL BREAK EVEN FROM THIS DEAL BY JUNE 5TH 2015.
That's not a lego 2, it didn't release as a replacement for lego, it was nothing more than a spinoff and was never expected to be more successful than lego itself which it never did OBVIOUSLY.
They could do some Minecraft spinoffs but none would be more successful than Minecraft itself, and Minecraft will always remain as it's base that players will always return to, that's my prediction at least.
seriously though, before this I assumed the Minecraft fad must be drawing to a close.
it's all about 'horror' games now in this youtube driven gaming market.
microsoft are about 2 years too late for such a massive aquisition. no way they can make $2.5 billion back from minecraft unless they have some plan to make Minecraft Xtreme which becomes the absolute best selling piece of media the world has ever seen.
I wish you guys would just celebrate the continuing downfall of terrible console makers
why get exasperated, just enjoy it
the more losers that fall down, the more obvious it becomes that true PC games, not console ports, are the future of gaming
Nigger, learn to offshore. Microsoft is technically based in Ireland while Mojang is in Sweden. Microsoft's using off-shore money to pay it.
Through various tax loopholes and accounting jewery, they should have made it back by next year. It's practically a free deal.
Number of pieces are constantly decreasing and the pieces themselves are becoming larger.
>LEGO, a company teetering precariously on the premise that kids want to be creative, has been struggling with exactly that conundrum for just over a decade. As recently as 1990, the standard box of LEGO bricks contained anywhere from 500 to 1000 pieces. Through sales research, focus groups and peer review, LEGO now believes such a set is way, way too complex. Let's dial it back a bit: not only do children not have the patience to gather together all the required parts for a castle, or boat, or car -- there isn't enough space in their tiny, ridiculous brains to previsualize long-term plans, imagine new forms, or create the requisite custom shapes.
>As a response to this trend, LEGO decreased the number of pieces in each box. Instead of grappling with a full one-hundred pieces to build that Kentucky Fried Chicken or Starbucks Coffee, now you only need ten. And look: these pre-fab green umbrella straws snap directly into the miniature espresso machine -- you don't even gotta build 'em. LEGO bricks have gotten bigger, as well: the size of each block in a set has increased steadily over time in direct proportion to your child's inability to manipulate his backwards, clumsy-ass ham hands. Who needs hours of unnecessarily complicated finger work when you're trying to develop your motor skills?
It didn't replace Lego because the market didn't react as they expected. It was their intention though.
By that rate they'll make it back in 10 years. Plus merchandise and other potential shit. Also cockblocking Sony.
That's how businesses usually work. They never expect immediate investment return. It's a long term investment.
Doesn't mean they aren't retarded though
But profits have been going down. They're running out of people who will buy minecraft because everyone and their aunt owns it already. Those were also the profits from a small indie studio, Microsoft will likely triple the staff at Mojang as well as have a fleet of lawyers fighting to remove minecraft clones from every platform. Buying Mojang is like buying Myspace.
>an entire fucking week into this already
BUT ALMOST EVERYBODY ALREADY OWNS DA GAME WHY BUY IT NOW
MERCHANDISING WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT, MOJANG ONLY MAKES MONEY OFF GAME SALES WHAT IS BRAND RECOGNITION?
For some no name video game music artist I'e be pretty happy with that.
The music isnt really that good anyway. I could see if he did all the sound for the game to get more but those shitty little songs dont warrant a huge amount of money.
It will be more funny if they fuck it up Mojang like they fucked up RARE
>way too complex
>children not have the patience or imagination
Holy shit I'm glad I was born when I did. I think lego IS responsible for the development of my imagination as a kid.
Of course kids won't have imagination if you keep denying it to them. I don't want to have kids now.
What is with Microsoft buying shit for more than it is worth? They bought Skype for a stupid amount of money and they haven't profited from it. Now they buy a one-hit-wonder games company just for an IP which came to light 5 years ago. Everyone who wanted to play Minecraft has already bought and played the shit out of this, so unless they bother to recode the game from the ground up in C++ so it actually runs better and doesn't use rival Oracle technology (fat chance), nothing good is going to come out of this.
They just dropped 2.5 billion to get 1 game on their system. 1 game that is already on everything else. This will only make sense if they are already deep into development on Minecraft 2 and its only going to be on Microsoft platforms. The fucking surface will get minecraft 2 before steam os.
>Moves realms to Azure
>Adds Screenshot and Video record functions that go direct to OneDrive
>Dosh rolls in from using Minecraft as a gateway to all their other services.
Skype came into profit last year man. Keep up.
My guess is they're planning to make Minecraft the new LEGO and push it for decades. The only problem is better more hip Minecraft is bound to appear any year now. I mean it's not like it's hard to make a Minecraft clone that's better in every way. LEGO isn't LEGO because of name recognition. It's LEGO because it's the best thing on the market.
>pay 2.5billion with a b for an autism simulator
>flagship corporate product for electronic entertainment
>center it around 4 year old software
In the Gates era they bailed Apple out of bankruptcy.
And a games company is not a competitor to a software company which mostly deals with enterprise software and games hardware. They probably just wanted to fill a hole somewhere. Like having a console with no games, for instance.
>center it around 4 year old software centered around 4 year olds.
I guess that works a bit better when you throw in merchandising and related spinoffs they could make like movies and tv shows and other types of games (they did the same with Lego). Good point man. I bet they took the money they had earmarked for Xbox Entertainment Studios and spent it on this and that may have been a smart move all told.
so how many vacations is Notch going to go on now with 2.5 billion?
Except the thing with Lego is Lego shit is good. Lego movie is good, Lego games are kinda good, Lego toys are good. No way will MS be able to build spinoffs of the same quality. It'll be cheap shit.
Actual business papers are saying they did it as a company wide acquisition pool instead of an Xbox division acquisition.
Also it's massively cheaper than the other bloated companies like King and Supercell.
From the wall street journal
>The acquisition isn't much of a financial risk for Microsoft, whose operations generate enough cash in roughly a month to pay for the Mojang purchase. Microsoft said it expects the deal to break even in fiscal year 2015.
Why would anyone play this game when a much superior spiritual successor already exists?
>center it around 4 year old software
Makes sense when you consider that the AMD chips in both the xbone and PS4 are already obsolete by current hardware standards 4 years ago.
>Jaguar, or Family 16h, is the codename for a low-power SoC microarchitecture designed by AMD to succeed Bobcat. Both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One use chips based on the Jaguar microarchitecture.
A 28nm SoC for lower power devices like tablets and notebooks is probably the equivalent of a half decent CPU and GPU combo 5-6 years ago.
Great. Now Notch can go on vacation for the rest of his life and never make a new game again.
>paying $2.5 billion just to have the original Minecraft ported to the Xbone
They could've spent that $2.5 billion on like 30 god damn XBone exclusives.
What the fuck were they thinking?
Those layoffs were restructuring after they took over Nokia and laid off 18,000 of its employees that they didn't need. It wasn't a question of not being able to afford to keep them.
Reminder that /v/ is almost entirely the reason Minecraft is popular.
Reminder that /v/ is almost entirely the reason Minecraft is a success.
Reminder that /v/ created this beast and has allowed it to become what it is.
Reminder that Microclap will make Minecraft 2 for Notch while still giving Notch oceans of cash because he still technically owns the game and rights to it, while he sits in a cabana, sipping yakisoba and a dr. pepper, masturbating to some b-list pornstar, knowing that he has succeeded on /v/ where countless /v/irgins have failed.
You guys are fucking idiots. The whole reason they bought Minecraft was to make money. They've already said they will support all platforms. Why would they spend 2.5 billion to make a title exclusive? Are you really that fucking stupid? The most you can expect is some exclusive content to land on Xbox consoles, use Destiny as an example. It will be weird however to see Microsoft Studios on playstation. Maybe, if MS are more serious about maximising its exposure, the Wii U might finally get a port? The gamepad seems like a far better option than your average xbox or playstation controller
Not sure if this was posted aleady, but wow.
I don't know, the something awful forums and their creation of the "let's play" genre combined with minecraft at the same time probably contributed as much if not more to the early success.
Mojang employes are not rich. They were being paid a monthly wage and that's not going to change with this
They will probably be laid off or leave on their own after Microsoft is done killing whats left of the company's identity.
Mojang owners and stockholders are the ones that got rich with this deal.
my sides have left the building
Daily reminder that Notch still comes here.
Daily reminder that he still comes here knowing we all hate him for Jewing us so long ago.
Daily reminder that Notch after this will have more money than Gaben.
Daily reminder that he will do nothing at all with it other than get fatter and more bitter.
>Microjew acquires minecraft
>"Don't worry the game will never change"
>waits a year so everyone forgets
>5 million units sold
>/v/ "w/e it wont last long"
>Next year annouces Wizardscraft
>charging 40 dollars because it has a few cutscenes
>Sell 8 million. critics give it a sold 9.5
>Next year annouces Robotcraft
>They are literally charging 60 dollars for a texture pack.
>No one cares anymore. They just let it happen
>10 million units sold. Solid 10/10 for creativity.
We ded now.
If it were any other company I would have laughted, but it just hurts too much
>minecraft already reached it's peak.
That's why MS is probably going to make Minecraft 2.
>I have no idea how Microsoft manage to make more money than they lose.
I buy Microsoft licenses for my company's clients all the time. This shit is mad expensive and they buy a LOT of them.
Most of the money is coming from money microsoft has cash on hand outside of the US. I would imagine he would get most of the money although it would most likely be taxed to hell. Maybe doing some stock swaps might be better for him. Looking at the current state of the market I would buy some gold and bonds. I got a feeling we are heading for a low soon. But then again I am a lowly neet so what the fuck do I know.
He's like the alter-ego for Toady. Which, thinking about it, makes me appreciate Toady more.
The same way Lego still makes money. By cutting deals with other franchises to include related content.
You can forget about the modding API but I would bet they would be more than willing to bloat it with licensed, pay to use shit.
I must've missed the resurrection of Steve Jobs. And he's working for Microsoft now, huh.
Oh, the thread is about Minecraft. Nobody gives a fuck about this game at this point, unless you're 12. In which case you should fuck off from this board.
Well, you do have alternatives now. Especially the clone, known as Minetest. I would wager that modders and competent developers could probably go farther faster with Minetest as it is free, and the source code is out in the open.
I'm still bitter because I bought a 360 for that game and WarTech. It easily stood with their Nintendo era products. And everyone who parrots off "HURR MS KILLED RARE" seems to never played it (Most likely because they were playing Gears at the time)
They should use minecraft on the xbone to create a nice working, secret sauce, coprocessor.
I never considered Minecraft to be shit. It gets boring real quick though. You play it in seasons, pick it up for a little while then never touch it again for a few months. It could have been better, but I still love creating stuff, also, there have been fun adventures and maps that have come out over the years.
Survival was fun when I first started out after buying the alpha. All in all it was well worth the price I paid for it ($15?). It played nice and I had fun much longer than many full priced games.
Still a shame it had to turn out like this. It could become better, but I figure this is less likely than Microsoft going for full control and literally strangling all mods and community content in favor for pricey dlc and control over monetization of videos.
>Could have got the rights to vtm of CCP
>Could hire all the old devs, and Obsidian
>Given the game a high budget to ensure quality
>Could have done this several times
>Buy a one shot wonder instead
I am actually mad.
I know it's MS, but think about it /v/. Your beloved devs, that franchise you love so much, just think of it. They could have got the rights of whoever (say Viewtiful Joe and Okami from Capcom) then given you a sequel, or several. Or revived multiple franchises.
Any of your dream scenario's (even shit like having a profesional writer make the story) could be possible. Instead, they gave the money to a lazy, fat swede. Just think about what that money could have done.
I bet Notch wont even re-invest it back into gaming to revive dead studios and publish much needed sequals to some games.
The guy who makes Dwarf Fortress
Why does the cat have no tail?
That's a magnificent beard.
I don't know why Google or the Libre Office guys (Canonical?) flesh out their free office type software. Eventually companies will notice that the free stuff is just as good as Microsoft's overpriced shit. I heard MS was dropping the price of Windows because so many laptops were ditching it for Chrome and whatnot, although it was probably just something like 5%.
Pure shit for getting work done
>you have to be always online
>We're gonna remind you of your google drive every five fucking minutes
>If the page hasn't loaded properly you are going to lose features
>Oh yeah, we're totally disregarding your gutter settings when you print out and we also are going to force you through our shitty printing system.
>HAVE WE TOLD YOU ABOUT GOOGLE DRIVE YET
No fucking thanks.
they probably already knew how incompetent he was and didn't want his ass awkwardly sitting around with that stupid smile on his face trying to explain why he didn't meet the deadline
I don't get shit about Google Drive, but whateves.
What about Libre Office? My point was why don't these other services try and match office and offer themselves for free to take MS place?
Even ignoring the fact they're a one hit wonder that people are getting bored of, there's no obvious reason that microsoft buying them would be better for their shareholders than just handing out the money as a dividend and letting them decide to invest in it. Shit that can be trivially pirated on the PC is never going to be a system seller for xbones.
i love that people like you pretend you have integerity.
You'd have probably sold minecraft at your first offer over 100k and youre talking shit about someone walking away from their start up with a fortune as if its dishonorable. THATS WHAT START UPS ARE FOR you put your work into it, create a brand and you cash out
You paranoid lunatic
Notch clearly said it wasn't about the money. He also said that Minecraft, in the bigger picture, belongs to all of us now!
Why do you claim to disbelieve double-speak? It's double. That means it's twice as true. Idiot tin foil hatter UFO shit head.
In that case, there are alternatives, some honest alternatives by decent and struggling devs who are pretty much doing it on their own more-so than notch did. Games like VOX. You also have Minetest, a clone with it's source code open to all, and it runs objectively better than Minecraft to boot.
If you are a skill dev and you liked Minecraft, you can basically design your own vision through and through. No waiting for the de-obfuscation of the code. If Minecrosoft takes a big sloppy shit on the community and content-creators, you can go to Minetest with the added bonus that not even a cent would go to MS.
i see you point. But still you have to imagine even with how lazy notch became the stress that a huge title like minecraft puts on you.
Especially with the autistic audience that minecraft collected
> They should've bought rights to resident evil, battle field or something major.
Do you not go outside or something? Have you SEEN how popular Minecraft is? Do you not notice that's been consistently topping sales charts since release? This thing has an unbelievable amount of staying power.
There is conceivably no bigger purchase for Microsoft to make instead of arguably purchasing Nintendo in its entirety.
Notch is the true savior of indie gaming -- nay, gaming as a whole.
With his beautiful 8-bit 3D dreamscapes we are left to retell the story of our childhood back when games were about good gameplay and not all the bells and whistles of modern gaming.
Notch has given us more than just his amazing game, though.
As a gamer first and an indie dev second, Notch has shown a level of work ethic like no one before him. It was tough, and he had many challenges to overcome, but Notch continued to humbly cultivate his masterpiece into something far more grandiose than any indie game, or even video game period, has ever been, is, or will ever be.
Thank you Notch.
Not really. Nobody buys Minecraft for the graphics, which is the first thing they'll improve in the sequel. Most people do it for the mods or for the online coop and pvp, which are all mostly free. So M$ will immediately turn off a lot of people with their paid online and their huge amounts of DLC that won't ever be as good as any mod.
$2.5Billion is a hell of a lot of money.
>Nobody buys Minecraft for the graphics
What the fuck does that have to do with anything I just said? People WILL buy a sequel if one is made and people WILL buy Xbox1's to play it on if it's exclusive to that console. This is a massive IP Microsoft now has their hands on. That's why I said there was conceivably no better purchase for Microsoft to make here outside of possibly buying Nintendo, because the combination of Nintendo's IP's might make it more valuable than Mojang and Microsoft. Obviously that type of purchase would be impossible, Nintendo would likely never sell themselves like that.
>Most people do it for the mods or for the online coop and pvp,
You don't appear to realize that the main audience for this game right now, and why it still sells so consistently well is in large part due to the fact that it's extremely popular with children.
>people thinking Microsoft bought them because of the consoles
They did it so they can secure minecraft only on windows 8 mobile platforms, this acquisition will not have any major effect on the PC and consoles versions of minecraft
This will have a big impact on the iOS and Android ports of Minecraft
You're under the impression that Minecraft is massively popular due to the fact it has a large audience of adults and gaming enthusiasts, it isn't. It's popular with kids. Kids don't need any reason to buy a sequel other than it being a sequel to a game they really enjoy.
>Oh, Minecraft 2! Mommy I want it!
Given Minecraft's code and conceptual work is practically stolen, there won't be a second Mohjang game other then same shit rebranded as "Minecraft 2".
But maybe on minecraft merchandise... yeah.
It's about having more IP for the future. MS already see PC and Mobile as the future. Consoles are pretty much dead.
Also having what's practically guaranteed to be the best selling PS4 game of that console's lifecycle. It's basically money for them whatever happens.
I'm not, by a long shot. You're severely underestimating it. There's Minecraft childrens merchandise fucking everywhere. There's a reason why people considered it a massive oversight for Nintendo to not have it on their system. It's bigger as a children's game than ANY of Nintendo's own titles right now.
This is one thing i cant understand. People have bought mutiple copies of minecraft
Theres like 2 xbox versions, the pc, the mobile version and now the PS3 and 4 are getting it. ANd there are probably people whove bought them all
my seven year old daughter loves Minecraft but if it goes Xbone exclusive and she wants one than tough shit, pandering to kids is meaningless when it's their parents who have the purchasing power.
the thing Microsoft doesn't get is that there aren't many people on the fence these days. their cancerous practices lost them a lot of the fans they did have and backpedaling to copy sony just makes them seem weak. Gamers aren't nearly as fickle as they seem to think. most people went into this generation firmly entrenched in their camp and all this stuff does is piss people off. gamers wont buy a system for a game they will feel betrayed, get angry and boycott the fucking franchise. I kinda liked Tomb Raider and probably would have bought the sequel but now that's out the the question just based off principle. it's more of a loss for them than for me. same thing with Dead Rising. I enjoyed 2 but can certainly live without that series. this shit doesn't sell systems it poisons brands and burns bridges.
It is definitely in decline, too. A lot of big name YouTubers have felt the waning interest in their views, and are branching out. I can only assume that sales were reflecting this, and the founding trio knew it was the perfect time to abandon ship, before the buyer - that they approached - noticed.
>pandering to kids is meaningless when it's their parents who have the purchasing power.
Most parents are stupid and have enough disposable income to buy their kids what they want to shut them up. Obviously you aren't like that, but you're in the minority.
>>desperately need something that sells consoles no matter the cost
not a good strategy when when the game you bought is available on almost as many platforms as Tetris. at this point I'm pretty sure everybody who is interested in it already has it. I really don't get what they expect to get out of a one trick pony like Mojang. Minecraft isn't really even a game so much as digital lego. what would a sequel even add that modds aren't already doing?
Nothing. Rare was in a decline before they left Nintendo anyways, look at Banjo Tooie and DK64. With its major talent leaving and no Nintendo to watch over them anymore the studio collapsed.
Can't find the exact source right now, but this was the first result on Google:
What if the strategy is that there is no future for consoles and this is just another step in the PC/Mobile future?
Plus they don't care it's on as many platforms as possible. It's more money for them. Especially when they start introducing realms and more onto the PS4 version.
Vita version's still releasing
Microsoft is supporting Vita better than Sony. Think about that.
>PS4 and PC have
GG you two, Xbone only has to go up against an already 2-year old system from the Nintendon'ts.
Xbox always wins.
>Microsoft is supporting Vita better than Sony. Think about that.
Godamn retard, Sony created so many more games for the Vita and even the Vita itself. All MS is doing is buying out just about the only game they can legally buy.
>"Sorry Susie, you can't play Minecraft ever again"
>"But why, Daddy?"
>"Because it's on a Microsoft console!"
>"Why does that matter? I'm only a seven year old and it's something I like."
>"KEK MICROSHIT NSA SPYBOX FAGGIT"
>"I hate you, Daddy."
>Killer Instinct only interesting thing
Might as well add Dead Island 2 on there as well.
>HE BOUGHT A PS4 RUNNING AT THE SILKIEST SMOOTHEST BUTTERY RED HOT THIRTY FRAMES PER SECOND!
>Talking about Sony in an Xbone thread
>make their money back next year
>further profits go into more games for 2017 and beyond
Microsoft makes money by forcing people into a closed ecosystem based on Windows. If they can force just 15% of current Minecraft users unto Windows and Windows Phone then they won, because those users will be Microsoft drones for the rest of their lives.
Look who did it first
>Trying to copy the "Sony Always Wins" motto? Xfags are pathetic
All at a silky s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-smooth 20FPS
Meanwhile, on PC with their ludicrous speeds of 240 FPS:
>inb4 charts of pc games
indies, flash and shitfests don't count.
Atleast it wasn't infinity ward. Could you imagine those retarded fucks sequalizing the shit out of it?
>he doesn't know he's been talking to a completely different person this whole time
>tfw spent 2.5 gorillion dollars buying a gaming PC
>i can count the amount of actual good games with good graphics on my fingers
>Steam library filled to the brim with indie shitters
I don't feel that bad, it's not like Xbone has games either.
>"Y-Y-Y-You're the fag! Y-Y-You are an xboner!"
>Console levels of stuttering on outdated hardware
> le exclusives
Exclusives are a fucking scam and the only purpose they have is to hold games hostage. Stop buying into this shit and stop supporting console exclusivity. Jesus christ /v/, you're so fucking retarded. Grow the fuck up.
they've got near unlimited funding and its not like they arent also investing into games. You cant just decide to not do something, when they can do both. they spent over 1 billion just last year founding 8 brand new studios. Quit being so nitpicky, they can afford it
>talks about the nature of consoles
>HAHAHAHH CONSOLES ARE OUTDATED
kek get informed on how it works mustard shitter.
You just got BTFO
lrn2read, she can already play Minecraft thus making no reason to buy another system to play something my toaster can run. hence why I'm saying it's a stupid move on Microsofts part that wont move many systems.
Not my posts:
You been talking to someone else the whole time brah
