Most insects don't attack on sight (most).
They attack defensively, probably knowing that going toe to toe with an ape 1000x bigger than them doesn't increase their life expectancy.

Don't squeeze them, knock them, restrain them, etc, they just wanna live.
Pay attention to their body language too. If they are clearly stressed out, they may freak out and bite anything that comes close.
Most insects will lean back and put their forelegs out (as sensors, because most bug eyes aren't great and have blind spots) if they're getting pissed.
