What are some god tier grid-based tactical games? Bonus points if you can name one better than pic related.
>>

Tactics ogre let us cling together
It's the best srpg.
>>
A2 was alright but the shit you had to do yearly or monthly or whatever was getting annoying when I was looking for winged dragon girls.
story meh. enjoy it from time to time.

tactics orge never finished it got kinda of stuck aim to go back into after i train up a bit.

disgaea 1,2,4 d2 are great game play and item world was just fun to comfy back and do. don't know how the series will do with most of the original people gone from what it seems disgaea 5 has female lead character.

also got fire emblem series hopefully the next game has more to the ai and victory conditions.

More like not using video games or anything else to permanently distract you from big issues in your life.
Or maybe it doesn't reach that far, yet stung a lot of people.

>What are some god tier grid-based tactical games?

Since you didn't mention that they have to have RPG elements, I'm going to tell you to play the Advance Wars series as they're the best grid-based tactics around
>>
Only betafags here
>>
>>261168753
Elaborate anon.
>>
every matsuno game is the same. tons of cool concepts that soon degenerate into getting just right resistances and counters, positioning doesn't matter.
>>
The original FFT and TO:LUCT are better than the Advance games.

I guess Fire Emblem counts. It's simpler, but usually requires thought, instead of just building OP units and steamrolling.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is the undisputed king of grid-based tactics though.

>tfw that site doesn't real

>>261167585
I tried to like this game, but the fact that I was steamrolling everyone by just doing all the missions alone and playing the game correctly really turned me off. You should try the original Tactics though. And if you really really like the job system, play FFV.

For other good SRPGs, see Shining Force and Vandal Hearts.

Tactics is fucking garbage

the interesting premise is only touched upon every 20 hours, the game explains NOTHING, it's slow as balls, and it's so fucking grind and dull.

Like I would I play it when I could play Fire Emblem and get actual gameplay and a story.
>>
>>261174657
I hope you aren't talking about FFT, anon.
>>
>>261174535
At least it played with one of the most core of classic FF things though: Existance vs. Nonexistance. If it was a normal game, you would definitely be playing the bad guy.

Also OP, try Eternal Eyes if you like monster games too.

Is there any way to design an SRPG and have it actually remain dependent on tactical decisions instead of grinding/how you raised your units?

I love Advance Wars, and I love the idea of an RPG mixed with that kind of gameplay, but every SRPG I try just feels like 90% of the battle is decided before i even make my first move

>>
>>
>>
>>261175103
The funny thing is, these games are designed like that.
At least, conceptually.
The problem arises in making the enemies worthy enough of handling a human opponent.
To some devs, this just means giving them cheap (sometimes unique) movesets.
The other alternative is, well, a cheating AI.
>>
Disgaea games the king of the genre. Geopanels and blocks add a kind of puzzle like mechanic which makes these games a lot more interesting.
>>
>>261175756
Yeah. That's why I want to make my own tactics game that maintains the feeling of RPG-like progression but still decides battles on how you play and not how you raised your units beforehand. But it seems the two might be mutually exclusive
>>
>>261175940
Disgaea a shit.
>>
>>261175940

I want to get into Disgaea, what games should I start with and which should I avoid? Unfortunately I don't have a PSP or Vita, but I understand those are the best ways to play those games
>>
>>261175408
Not the same anon, but which ones have you played? As someone who's only played 7 and Awakening (which I found to have been a major downgrade), I can't say I really agree. Exp management was an important part of strategy in the same way managing weapon durability/uses was, although Awakening throws both of these out of the window. I can't speak on behalf of the series but I'd still like to hear your reasoning.
>>
>>261173246
Alternatively, if you want to have fun with a bro Great Big War Game is pretty much just like this but on mobiledon't bother with little war game really, they're made for casuals
>>
>>261176220
I like the random nature of the item world it can make you adapt to fucked up conditions. Like an invincible block with a block that spreads Geopanels will result in an unwinnable situation if you aren't fast or clever.
>>
>>
>>261174656
Is that fucking toady? I recognize him from Rouge Galaxy
>>
>>261172891
The point of FFTA is that if your life sucks, you should get used to life sucking and not try and better it in any way.
>>
>>261176491
I played Path of Radiance and Awakening (on Hard, which discourages grinding by making Reeking Boxes more expensive). I can see where your coming from, but EXP management really isn't the type of puzzle I look for in those kind of games. No offense to anyone who likes it, but it wasn't my preferred kind of strategizing.

Operation Darkness is pretty cool. Maybe not god tier, but it's the only tactics game I can think of that lets you steal every last piece of equipment the enemy soldiers are using. All the options for cover/synch movements/ambushes were neat too.
Plus the setting is really dumb in a great way. One minute they're playing real black and white WW2 footage, and the next you're helping Frankenstein and The Reanimator stop Nazi vampire wizards from completing their summoning circle.
>>
>>261176478
Start with 1 and play them chronologically from there, or it'll be difficult to play the previous ones without the latest features. Fuck anyone who says 1 has aged badly.

3 is really the only one I'd say to consider skipping because the cast is awful with the exception of Rasberyl. Dimensions I can't speak for but I've heard it dropped the ball in some aspects.

>>
>>261177530
If by "better" you mean "Doned spends all his time playing video games now", then yes, it got "better".
>>
>>261175103
This game kinda, there's a very small amount of upgrading inbetween missions so it relies more on tactics than just having overpowered units. How it works is each mission you get 3 to 7 or so stars, and you decide which of your 6 units gets a star, which is one upgrade (usually a health upgrade, at certain intervals it can be something major like 10 stars might be a new gun) however any unit can only be given 2 stars at a time. It's a pretty fun game overall but it feels kinda unfinished, like when you kill an enemy they just disappear into a cloud of smoke. If shit like that doesn't bother you though, it's a great game for $10 or however much it is right now.
>>
>>261177621

VH2 is probably the only other SRPG that actually stands up there with FFT and TO as far as political and complex story, as well as mature setting goes. Alon with other things like visible equipment changes, wide cast of characters, customization through the ass without being limited to jobs, etc. Its only problem is the absolutely exploitable combat system aka enemies will ALWAYS, without fail, go for a back attack on your characters.

It's really stupid. Basically after Megaman went away Dr. Light made X. X was the most advanced thing ever conceived by a human. Unlike Megaman X was completely free of all robotic restrictions and could think and act on his own as his own person. As well as having a ridiculous series of weapons and armors. Light thought X was too dangerous to exist in that time and so locked him in a capsule to ensure that he'd never ever go wild and attack people. 100 years later Dr. Cain found him in Light's ruin lab and woke him up. In addition Cain built every reploid that ever existed based on X's design. But Cain was an archeologist, not a roboticist. So the reploids were imperfect and a large percentage of them randomly went crazy, eventually leading to a series of wars that pretty much destroyed humanity.

And somehow all of this is Light's fault for building X in the first place and not Cain's.

Kamidori Alchemy Meister is objectively one of the best SRPG's made

>30+ characters, ranging from humans to elves, angels to demons, and more
>different weapon types for each character
>hundreds of different abilities
>can craft your own weapons, potions, armor
>3 different routes to take
>also an H-game so you can fap to it
>EX dungeons are hard as hell

Though, the stories and the characters aside from the three main heroines aren't really fleshed out

>>261181348
It's not rocket science. Just pay through the story and complex things like the item world/reincarnation are gradually introduced. I like the sequels a bit more on the mechanics side but the first one has the best characters, setting and art.
>>
>>261167585
Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSX is superior.

It has a more engrossing plot and more interesting characters. It also has actual difficulty and better secret content.
>>
>>261181348
Very primitive entry to the franchise. Widest breadth of potential endings, cast is very colorful and flavorful, the mastery system actually means something, be careful as fuck with the item world because no free Gency Exit, and some of the least impressive music, but most of the most iconic songs in the franchise.

FFTA was too easy to even let me consider it as the best.

If I can blaze through the whole things, WITHOUT using my 3 I-WIN buttons from the 10 JPs accumulated, it's hard to say one way or the other if the strategy is good in it.

Regular FFT was better, I felt.

Everyone's life is bad in some way. We don't exist to be happy. The only way you can bear life is to deal or make it as good as possible for yourself and others.

Their issues weren't dealt with, they were distracted. And in the end, they would lose everything. It is better to "suck it up" than choose a dead end.

But FFT wasn't hard at all either. Ramza was the hardest thing in the game, and he was weaker than Llednar Twem.

characters can die on certain dialogue choices, but it mostly affects your "army" with things like, morale, food supply, number of warriors etc.
>>
Is War of the Lions better than the original?
>>

translation is off, has slowdown issues but there is a fix for it.

main bonus is that they put in Balthier from XII, and the Dark Knight class which is overpowered as fuck, although it's a pain in the ass to unlock.
>>
>>261182495
The original LUCT was far better than the new one

Lost all of its Ogre charm and got replaced with FFT
>>
>>261182145
>>261182145
Yeah, pretty much. As far as I can tell, there are like 15 different classes and they each have a niche special ability. Humans seem to be glass cannons while the giants can take a few hits but generally seem to do less damage. Difficulty is spot on though; I haven't been able to complete a battle without a unit getting KO'd but I also haven't lost a battle yet. Also, outside of battle, the decisions you make decide stuff like how many days worth of supplies you have, who you recruit, and it seems the only way for a character to die permanently is through the dialogue choices. (RIP Egil)
>>
>>261182318

Overall I'd go with TO.

Having said that, I feel FFT's class system is flat out better, and FFT doesn't have that completely terrible crafting system. Holy shit what were they thinking.

I like to think of 2 and 3 as both good but in different ways.

2 had a larger focus on an actual army while 3 has only 5 units. Your Hero, 3 other fighters and your flagbearer.

However, in 3 they're way hardier and can actually take a beating. I'm not sure how I feel about the distinction of the Uberhero having a fully 'grown' body though. But I did like that the masks actually looked like masks.

Your pons are hardier but holy shit the damage some enemies crank out. If one of your units gets caught in a Salamander explosion you may as well write that unit off. And a lot of times it feels like enemies act outside the normal rhythm so you have to throw away Fever just to get you units away in time.

FF Tactics for psx, FFTA is solid tho, never thought I could dump 300 hours into GBA game.

Front mission - start with FM 1 for NES then FM 2 with translation patch, FM 3 and so one.
You will be surprised how well even first FM holding up.

Since no one mentioned it, Xcom Enemy Unknown/Within is actually grid based and its pretty solid as long as you understand and ok with a few things:

>Obstacles dont stop the bullets, every single weapon is capable of penetrating and destroying everything (apparently thats how powerful they are)
>Obstacles just hide you from the view and making hitting you more difficult.
>Play with aiming angles or what ever but the next point is, you can see giant enemy towering above the car but the game will still count this as in cover, same if the enemy stand next to a pillar and you can see 90% of it.
Game is heavily based on RNG, example:
There is really narrow corridor and one giant alien that blocking most of it.
Your team has aprox 80-90% to hit it.
Your team fire 6 times with abovementioned hit percentage and every shot misses destroying everything to the sides of the enemy just not hitting the alien himself.
Some small dude firing at you across the whole map and is fucking instakill.
This how RNG work in this game, if you ok with it, you can try it, nice maps, well done weapons, soldiers skills are nice and managing your base has some strategic depth, nice visuals, just fucking RNG.

Tried to get in Disgaea 4 but before you get some skill you spend lot of time grinding on some very bad, randomly generated maps in item world, nothing to see or do, jsut grind but hey, people say its 10/10

Valkyria Chronicles, not really grid based but have some common elements with this genre.

Just few on top of my head.

And that is something he just has to live with. Its unfortunate and sad, but bitterness and wishful thinking will lead nowhere but to pointless things like hugboxing and wallowing in self-pity (also known as tumblr). Ivalice was basically Doned's circlejerk over his own sad lot in life and his refusal to accept that it is pointless to fixate of what could have been. There are many ways for people with shit lots in life to live a happy and well-adjusted life, but they will never get the chance to pursue that happiness if allowed to be consumed by their own bitterness; particularly those around them must be actually supportive and not simply enablers of delusion.

Most strategies in these games involve leveling OP characters and/or exploiting flaws in the AI. IMO, the problem is they allow for too much customization so the designers can't simply make a few legitimate solutions to the battle as a sort of strategy puzzle. If they actually restricted your unit choices it could be done more like a puzzle.
>>
>>261188193
>it's a FULL rebalance of EVERYTHING EVER in the ENTIRE GAME

>give Squire class a revive
>entire game turns into sand-bagging

No thanks. The original game was fairly bad in terms of only giving the player consistent capability to resurrect friendly units (with enemies being unable) but adding a resurrect ability to an early as fuck class, and then subjobbing Squire or Chemist to every single enemy is just idiotic.

What they ought to have done, if they were fiddling that hardcore with the ISO hacking, was making consumables like the XCOM remake. If you bring 3 Med-kits (Phoenix Downs) into the battle equipped on a character, you can only use 3 per battle. No infinite sandbagging.

Actually, I think Tactics Ogre's PS1 version did this

My only complaint about that game is the flat battlefield without obstacles (besides the odd fire pit once every 10 maps). It just makes it trivially boring.

Beyond the tactics portion, I feel like they didn't develop the overworld Oregon Trail stuff enough. I liked making those choices a lot.

The art is perfect, though. Absolutely no complaints there.

And no one has to deal with your bitching. Deal with it or kill yourself, it's your choice.

Meds are for alleviating pain, not escaping it. There's no escaping pain.

Hurt your feelings, cripple babbie? Just because you're a subhuman doesn't mean you need to behave like one.

>And you can tell the team behind LUCT actually gave a fuck unlike the guys behind WotL

They're the same team, you moldy cunt. The PS1 LUCT was created by Matsuno and his company Quest. They were bought over by Squaresoft to work on FFT and then Vagrant Story. Then Squaresoft turned into Square Enix. Matsuno was promoted to lead designer/producer, made FF12, and got fired because he took so long. Besides Yoshida (the artist) all the Quest people stayed behind.

These ex-Quest remainder people are the same people who remade LUCT and did WOTL. I'd argue that LUCT's got some flaws too, like adding in the TP system from FFXI (it belongs in an MMORPG, not a TRPG). WOTL is fucked because of the naming conventions and speed slowdown.

I do. Played it on PS1. Cant replay it now since it never worked on an emulator.

Funny how some of the stuff pays homage to A Song of Ice and Fire (The White haired guy is in the North)

I loved Tactics A2 but it was way too easily broken. Just ridiculous combos like Seer's Magick Frenzy + any dual wielding class.

Sting's games are alright. Their art style is overly cutesy so that's probably why it doesn't appeal to many fans of the genre

Disgaea has the raunchy humor, memes, and endless grinding which seems easier for the masses to tap into (Borderlands, Saints Row) Personally, it's not my series

I don't know, maybe the original PS version? Really it has far better gameplay and the plot while it gets really fucking stupid is at least better than "lol it's a video game world".

I remember that scene. How pissed I was at this. Then later, wondering why I got tossed to chaos route for being morally right, I dug around and found out it's cause the morality of it isn't in the equation, but whether you're a good, obeying soldier or an idealistic fool.
