A game that has a pretty great custom map editor that allowed for several kinds of games to be played. The graphics are old and cartoony, but have a decent charm to them, along with the voice acting. Heroes are important. Warcraft 3 and TFT plays like an RPG. All the standard RTS fare is still there, so it still plays like an RTS. All you need to do differently is level up your hero by any means necessary. Get him geared up. Get those OP skills online.

Also, enjoy the campaign. That alone makes the game worth it.

I did play Unreal Tournament, which had some cool custom maps, but wasn't even aware of Quake. Probably would have loved it if I had known.

OP here, just went through the prologue on Hard. I knew this game was popular but it's nice to see a thread bloom like this.

About to start the human campaign but I might only do one level before I hit the hay. It's fun. A little archaic in the control scheme what with having to click repair and then the building you want repaired, but that's to be expected due to the age of the game.

I like the old timey voice acting. Feels video gamey. Feels good, man. Also gotta love Orcs being portrayed as actual sentient creatures and not just mindless killing machines.

From release to today, I've played it every day. Soul Chess, Plague, Shiverbane, Destiny Battle, Hell Vs Heaven's remakes, Diablo Arena, Upadoro TD and Bug Evolution were all my favorites. I nust have over 10,000 hours in this game. I'm not sure how I feel about having been through the young days and the entirety of the golden age. I feel great sadness that it's over, and that it'll never be the same. I hope the Dota 2 mapmaker will atleast allow some of the great maps from a better time to be remade, and become popularized.

God knows Blizzard isn't going to give us a WC4 we wanted.

Dispel/purge wrecks him. Get priests/spirit walkers to Adept and spam mass dispel to destroy his boars. Orcs can obliterate his bear with a novice level shaman purge.

Undead, you're better off going Banshees so you can posess the bear if it's high level. Sure, it might be a waste considering the timed life but trading a support caster for that fucking bear is worth it in most circumstances.

Well, the first thing is that you kind of need to either make BM your first hero or not take him at all. His big thing is that he can dominate early on with his summons, when the unit count is small and you need to save every gold coin you can.

He's pretty damned good at early rushing because of that. You don't necessarily need to end the game before the 10-minute mark, just delay them enough for you to get the technology advantage and then take their base before they achieve such counters.

If that's not possible, building units that counter dispellers are your next best option. Get a Hex or a Sleep, or a unit with Devour so you can take the dispelling units out of the fight before they can destroy you.

I remember playing this one custom map with my friends that was called resident evil or something, you explored the mansion from RE1 as a WC3 map.

We never got far into it, there was some kind of puzzle in the game that we couldn't work out. A door blocked by instant death fire that gave a hint about needing a lot of water to put it out, we found something like a tank of water that had a suggestively similar description but never worked out how to apply the water to the fire.

Have fun in campaign, man. I don't know how it is now but i enjoyed it even if its story was simple. Also, if you have a friend there are some coop campaigns maps around, from RoC campaigns alliance, orcs and undead are finished, not sure about night elves. Played some recently with a friend and it was all right, difficulty was actually upped(since 2 players) and other tweaks(like you can use each other's smithy for upgrades so no need to build two) and what not. That conversion definetly wasn't done in a half assed way. I also recommend to fuck around with the editor, it's fun enough just to make stupid shit. If you want to look how triggers work then you can unpack official maps with MPQ unpacker(google it) and look around.
I still remember doing stupid shit as a kid like placing bazzilion heroes against archimonde(who still wrecked them because of armor type) and what not.

The Hard Campaigns are terrifyingly difficult sometimes.

To this day I cannot beat the final level in the Frozen Throne campaign. There just seems to be no way to consistently beat Illidan and his Naga. And the Naga are so ridiculously good in an extended battle with their poison attacks. Cut you down way faster than the rot from the Abominations. The fact that you lose Arthas while taking those stupid Obelisks makes it that much harder.

Plus you have to successfully hold the obelisk too.
It's not like defending Kel'Thuzad where you can win the mission with him entirely surrounded and at 2 HP, you need to have Arthas go in, take the thing, prevent him from getting killed while doing so, and then push back any Naga and Blood Elves that come to push your shit in.
Plus, at any point through this procedure they can swoop in around the map to get at you other obelisks.

The amount of times I've taken one just to have Illidan barely get the upper hand on my army and then murder Arthas and immediately take it back is just too much.
