Tension is the key to quality scares in any form of media. It's why good horror movie directors like to keep the monster a mystery for as long as possible. Whatever you make up in your mind is going to be a hell of a lot scarier than what the monster really is, so you should play on that for prolonged dread.

This game has tension, though. I thought it was pretty scary.

It might never happen again, but that only makes you more cautious.

So yeah, a lot of games build around a jumpscare, and it can be done very right, but sometimes they rely too much on that alone.

I'm sure most people on /v/ will disagree with me but I think FN@F got so famous is because it *doesn't* rely on jumpscares to scare you as much as other games.

The scariness comes through the fact that ultimately you are in charge of your own fate, but that it's so stressful to try and keep track of the robots. A single fuckup and you're dead. Unlike normal jumpscares where you're basically just walking around mentally preparing for a jumpscare you know will be unavoidable, in FN@F you can actually beat the game without a single jumpscare.

The "jumpscare" when you lose is scary because you fucked up and because you're under a lot of stress
