I know exactly what you're looking for, those cinematic space battles a la Star Wars. X3AP with XRM has those, the war sectors . I wish I had taken screenshots or something but this is the best video I could find on short notice and even the battle it depicts is pretty small.

In some of the major war/border sectors (away from central space) The maps can have hundreds and hundreds of fighters fighting amongst dozens of capital ships, carriers and weapon platforms firing at eachother from KMs away. Its epic, for lack of a better word. And is absolutely gorgeous to behold (if you have a strong enough computer to handle all that shit going on your screen). Some of the sectors are like space WW1 with 2 fronts facing off against eachother lobbing explosives and lasers at eachother across a no mans land filled with the rotting husks of destroyed ships and stations

Just watch the video, and imagine 100 times more ships and lasers on the screen, it gets that crazy.

Also should mention that these battles take place in sectors far away from central space so you'll have to fly around lookng for them, generally its near Terran and Xenon space and Pirate space.

ALSO want to mention the best part, X3AP is an entirely open sandbox so you cna participate in this battle at any level, want to be a hot shot ace leading a wing of fighters? Or a fleet admiral controlling multiple wings from a carrier? Or a captain riding a missile frigate? Or maybe you'd rather set up weapon platforms and a base so you can claim war torn territory for yourself? Or maybe your desires are more mercantile based and you want to set up a missile production facility to sell to both sides of the warfront? You can do all of that and nearly everything in between

Why the hell would you sit still making you an easier target? I remember in some of the 40k fluff describing space battles lasting several weeks usually because nobody is stupid enough to get closer and ships firing at each other despite being hundreds of thousands of kilometers apart.
