You can't really have scary games anymore. At least on a wide scale. Imagine if something like SH2 was released in this day and age, people would complain about how they couldn't get James to walk around right to no way to get head/armshots.

Say a spooky game gets green lighted on Steam or whatever. A handful of people will play it and be all "Yeah man this is spooky." Then Hernandez will write and article about it and say "This game was spooky but also raped me." Suddenly it's a cult hit and Microsoft buys the sequel as a Bone exclusive and we get what is essentially RE7.

Yes, you're on the final loop. To finish it you have to make the baby laugh three times. The first laugh happens when you wait for everything to get quiet and then take ten paces. The third triggers if you stand completely still while the controller rumbles and then examine the phone. After you trigger all three laughs the phone will start ringing. Answer it by zooming in on it and then exit the loop and the game is over. The only problem is, most people can never get to the third because no one knows the proper criteria for triggering the second. Personally, I got the second laugh while on the pause screen. I've seen others say they got it for examining certain objects while certain sound effects played, and others for shouting certain things into the microphone while near the ghost.

Can someone fill me in on this? I don't have a PS4 but from what I gather this is from the "Player Trailer" of the new Silent Hill? Kojima is a ruse master but can't think of much he's done to screw around with fans since the Raiden reveal for MGS4. Maybe it's an improvement from Gauntlet Hill but I would have imagined Kojima of all people at Konami might have a bit more insight on what makes a SH.

You REALLY haven't played many multiplayer horror games. It's like tag: the players switch roles every round, so the monster acts differently every time. I heartily recommend buying Garry's Mod. Stop It, Slender!, parts of Ultimate Chimera Hunt, Murder, Garry's Horror and of course Morbus are all EXCELLENT examples of what I'm trying to tell you.

People keep saying they want more Lovecraftian horror, but Lovecraft gets enough representation in horror video games as it is.

We need more Poe-type horror (like Amnesia: Justine) and M.R. James-type horror.

In fact, M.R. James has some of the spookiest supernatural creature types among the three authors.

I mean we already have a FEW games that have tried to adapt M.R. James type plots, like Dark Fall and The Lost Crown etc, but none of them have managed to adapt some of the frightening spectres associated with his works.

For example the ghost woman in PT and stuff like you see in Ringu or The Grudge would be more a typical Jamesian spectre (Wailing Well, Rats) than a Lovecraftian creature or a Poe one.

In 'Lost Hearts', 'Wailing Well', 'Rats' the spectres are almost like decaying corpses, like what you saw in PT. In 'Lost Hearts' the spectres have long claws, and a hole in their chest where their hearts were carved out of them.

Most jumpscares are used this way, but they CAN be effective if used in moderation.

Build the atmosphere, build the tension, and let the player freak themselves out. But there's always a limit to how far you can take a player before they either calm down or get bored. That's where jumpscares come in. They let off some of the pressure built up from the atmosphere. When they happen, they let the player know that there's a definite threat. So, as they wander through the oppressive environment, they're constantly on their toes and jumping at every shadow. That's something IT did really well. You had two, maybe three jumpscares in the whole thing, spaced far apart from each other. The rest of it was atmosphere and disturbing imagery.

In 'O Whistle And I'll Come To You My Lad', the spectre looks like a regular figure in the distance. But as it comes closer, you see it's moving in a weird, unnatural fashion.

The designs aren't really scary. The atmosphere is what makes the designs pop out more as scary. The games have other retarded looking monsters such as the leg mannequins from 2. I like his designs overall though. The monsters are meant more to look insane or disturbing then anything else. Like a chimera or mutant.

It's just that there are a certain criteria that have to be met before you can get the actual "ending" and that criteria is still unclear. Some people do certain things and it works, while other people do the same things and it doesn't.
