The little sister character, Nana, calls you "Niinii" throughout the game, and we went back and forth a lot on how to translate this. For those who haven't heard the term Niinii before, it's based on Oniichan or Oniisan, the word for "big brother." So it's kinda like "Brobro." Problem is, "Brobro" sounds a little obnoxious in English! In addition, "big brother" sounds a little overly formal, just "brother" sounds kind of awkward, and "bro" doesn't have the same cutesiness factor as Niinii.

So we looked at Nana herself, and tried to figure out what kind of character she was. Unlike, say, Yuka from Corpse Party (who uses "oniichan" every other word because she's completely dependent on/obsessed with her brother), or Satoko from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (who also uses "niinii" because she, too, is pretty much dependent on/obsessed with her brother), Nana is more just... a really weird kid. ;) She's neither dependent on nor obsessed with Nanashi, but rather puts on airs to that effect because -- after all -- she is the little sister character, and that's what little sister characters are supposed to do.

Basically, Nana is a self-aware anime trope. She recognizes Nanashi as the main character of... something... and herself as the "adorable little sister" figure. Which makes sense, because Nana also happens to be a shut-in anime-obsessed otaku. Anime and games are her life, and the real world is scary to her.

So ultimately... we decided she'd call Nanashi "Brotag" in the English. Like, short for "brotagonist." Because it's cute, it's indicative of her personality, and it gets across the same basic feel as "niinii" in the Japanese without any of the unwanted "oh GOD, not another moeblob character!" affectations.

Same with referring to someone that you look up to as "onii-[whatever]", "onee-[whatever]", "aniki", or "aneki". Usually, we don't have a neat-sounding replacement term in English.

I'm probably gonna start a shitwar with this statement, but I fully believe what I'm about to say. A good translation is barely accurate to the actual japanese text, and is mostly a localization that focuses on keeping the situation, context, humor, relationships, etc. intact. I'd much rather read something that turned a word pun into a completely different joke that still got across how the old man was trying to tell his little girl to smile, or whatever, than just an accurate translation of the same word pun that makes zero sense in english.

Yes, but those are a total nightmare that will most likely be stuck in translation hell for years at best, and nigh impossible at worst. You take what you can get.

For a non-vidya example of what I consider a good translation, look up Over-Time's subs of Kyoryuger. The show isn't amazing or anything but there's a character that makes old man puns constantly. In this translation, they replaced them with new puns that still convey the original meaning. Another sub group, TV-Nihon, just left the jokes as-is with translation notes. If you can't tell why that's a bad idea I don't know what to tell you.

I feel that the game wouldn't be so well received if it wasn't pushed a little more in the humor route anyway, as the humor in the Japanese version is a little more in-tune with an episode of Oreimo or Nyaruko, at best. 80% of the work in translation is nonsense, it's why computers can't do it for shit. Especially from Japanese to English, where you have simple bits of vocabulary like chan and paisen that occur more or less constantly if they appear, and a translator has to have some idea of how to flavour the equivalent English sentence and have an option for what to do in instances where a character isn't using them to make a point and shit like that. And this is all while they absolutely cannot change the animations, number of text boxes or basically do anything to manage the flow of the work.

Most translations are shit because to translate a work properly, you need to rewrite it, and if you were good at that you'd be writing your own shit directly and not have to deal with all the bullshit translation foists on you.
