Star Ocean 4 and Infinite Undiscovery where the two jRPGs that almost made me not want to give ToV a chance.

Star Ocean started out alright but then counter earth happened and it went down the shitter.

Infinite Undiscovery started out alright too, during the start you get a faint look at the original ideas they wanted to include in the game (the stealth segment) but everything felt so unpolished from pair attacks to secondary party members (who felt more like they couldn't finish them in time).

What both games have in common is the protagonist going full edgemeister for a while.

It had it's good points and I played it far longer than SO4 but it just felt so rushed. They cut the day/night cycles and the changes that cycle would have brought. The secondary party members felt like cut characters.

And IIRC you have to rely on the AI to heal you. And while you could access the inventory to take a potion, it wouldn't pause the game so you're left with either relying on the AI or getting pounded hard. But that part could just be my memory lying.

While I enjoyed the combat and a few of the characters I felt like Infinite Undiscovery was a huge letdown for tons of reasons. If I remember right, the enemies just kind of come out of nowhere. All the villains seemed like they would have been cool if they had been fleshed out a little. Shit, I only think one or two even gave their names. My biggest gripe though was the secondary character nonsense. There were a few characters I really wanted to use but because they were secondary I couldn't.

I didn't mind it, but it was very poorly written. The way I see it, the 3D world (your world, the "game") has basically become a parallel world to the 4D world. And the story while slowly improving after that point, never reaches up to "hey this is maybe at least decent" because the whining NEVER stops.
The only fun you can get out of SO4 is by playing as Meracle or Myuria and just fucking around while literally ignoring every word spoken by anyone in the game, except maybe Meracle because she's token happy-go-lucky DFC catgirl.
