I live in Australia, which has a fuck-all video games industry. The course is giving him a $40K AUD debt to pay off for the next decade. For reference, that's 20K short of a Medicine or Law degree in Australia.

You're right. To be successful in the industry requires a lot of experience and networking. Both of which most people start off with nil. The person who gets the job is the person who is most qualified, that's going to be whoever has the best grades.

It's all well and good to be an ideas guy and pursue a career in programming, but I've seen plenty of people dispassionate about video games get the job just because they have more experience and know what they're doing.

It costs a ton. Easily thousands upon thousands of dollars for even the simplest universities. You usually have to spend months trying to scrap together some measly scholarships or hope for your parents to die and leave with a good life insurance policy it might be enough to cover 2 years worth.

Also because it has good job security, a growing job market (increasing average age + baby boomers are all starting to get really old), and since I live in Southwest US get to stay inside in air conditioning. Now he may be very well talking out of his ass, because I grew up with my parents owning their own business and they had to spend more time there than anyone else. But they also had the flexibility to be able to pick me up from school, go on field trips with me, etc, too.

That's actually what a lot of people do. Make a shitty mobile game or indie PC game as a demonstration of your programming and development skills, then show it to companies you want to work for. Most college game development programs will make you do that at some point as well.
