I have a friend who's convinced all his other friends to join him in an online video game dev course accredited at AIM.

I live in Australia, which has a fuck-all video games industry. The course is giving him a $40K AUD debt to pay off for the next decade. For reference, that's 20K short of a Medicine or Law degree in Australia.

I wish I had sensible friends...

Let me spell it out for you, just so we can make sure that nobody tries to spin a toxic opinion about a video game degree. By and large, these degrees are worthless.

Industry powerhouses hire "talent" with multidisciplinary skills in coding and design, and tangible experience. Not a piece of paper from a mom-and-pop accredited video game special school.

These institutions are scams. The kids who fall into these scams more often than not come out of pocket and with no direction in life. At least an IT degree can set you working in a computer repair shack for the rest of your life.

Now with that being said, if video games aren't something you absolutely love or you're just meh about your craft and not about always bettering yourself, learning on your own, and constantly evolving - yea you're going to fucking fail in the industry.
>>
>>256167007

Engineerfag here, it's a laugh when people study vidya. It's a hobby not a job. Realistically you have to be top of your field to get work, most people aren't top of their field.
>>
>>256169734

But you don't need a degree in that. What companies care when working in game development/programming is your portfolio.

A employer doesn't give a fuck if you went to Full Sail, what they want is proof that you made vidya and actually have experience under your belt.

Yeah, they do.

Don't want to rain on your guyses parade, but all STEM degrees - your place of education matters A LOT, a degree from Full sail is worth literally nothing compared to a degree from Penn or Berkley. Not even exageratting, your degree will be absolutely worthless.

If you are actually interested in game design, don't forget to study it independently. These university courses probably entail a lot of good game design topics that actually matter when making a game. You just don't learn how to code (and thus are unable to get employed)

Computer science is not software engineering.

Computer science is directly orientated to the more mathematic side/theoretical side of software and computer engineering.

Software Engineering almost purely programming and software engineering, design, development etc.

An IT degree can provide you with a whole variety of options and they're not just related to hardware stuff. You'd actually have more of a chance getting into gaming design/development with one of these than you would "studying video game design".

How is journalism not an actually industry. I'm not dumb enough to actually study it (commerce here) but like, every city has at least five newspapers and every town has at least one, not to mention websites and news networks. In terms of useless degrees, it really ranks pretty high. Certainly higher than "english" or "video game design"

I am now getting a part time job to hold me through August when I can start GED prep classes then I'll be going to a community college to study computer science with the idea pf advancing in 3D animation and programming. Maybe creative writing on the side. I plan on eventually starting up some old prpjects I had with an old friend in animation while working on a video game as a side hobby. Then somewhere along the way find something that'll allow me to get sufficient money while allowing me to pursue my life goal pf traveling the world and doing dangerous adventurous shit, at which point I'd abandon all else.

The problem is that vidya students are pretty apt to think of themselves as idea guys, when you really need a solid programming base and visual design competency.

Its also the type of thing where you really need to be a self-starter or have a really good network to get you a job.

I was just reading the other thread about ideas guys.

You're right. To be successful in the industry requires a lot of experience and networking. Both of which most people start off with nil. The person who gets the job is the person who is most qualified, that's going to be whoever has the best grades.

It's all well and good to be an ideas guy and pursue a career in programming, but I've seen plenty of people dispassionate about video games get the job just because they have more experience and know what they're doing.

This right here. Most of the cases of people enrolling in game design courses are idiots with zero knowledge of the industry and just wanna go work for Bethesda or some shit.

If you know what you're doing, you can still make good money from such a cookie cutter degree. You just need to do your research. Once you've got the ball rolling, you can then move on to bigger, more enjoyable projects.

Its the same for any arts/design degree.

It costs a ton. Easily thousands upon thousands of dollars for even the simplest universities. You usually have to spend months trying to scrap together some measly scholarships or hope for your parents to die and leave with a good life insurance policy it might be enough to cover 2 years worth.
Otherwise you probably have to use student loans which have ridiculous interest rates and are extremely harsh, plus they can never be removed even by bankruptcy, so a lot of people wind up in endless debt to the government before they've even gotten started in life.
Colleges are some of the biggest cancerous awful bullshit in America.
>>
>>256177289
Except I have my own business and make 300k a year. So yeah college is really shit tier. Chances are if you are getting your bachelors you will get minimum wage by the time you leave college. But nice try thinking your life is going in any direction other then the drain. Also if you want to get money you then have to get your masters, and that's 6 years of loans and paying tuition. On top of that that money is really shit so if you want to get your PHD that's another 4 years. So do the math poorfag, grownups are taking control of your life instead of you wasting time in a shit system.

The real problem is I do not like college or academics. It kinda pisses me off when I graduated top 5% of my high school just because I showed up and turned in assignments. I honestly believe many poor people choose their own fates in life even though that's mean to say, I've become jaded since I see the absolute laziness and how the kids back in high school WANTED to be stupid. This is why you're a dumbass.

Private schools = privately funded. Private schools on the mainland are much better funded.

The teacher pay myth is so often repeated by idiots who will never go to college in the first life, just trying to put down teachers who made them feel stupid. Consider the fact a teachers pay is for working half the year, and is usually quoted from public school wages. Teaching a private year round school starts you off around 65k, and by the time you pull tenure you're looking at somewhere around 80-90k.

It doesn't matter that that wasn't the beginning of the conversation, you were claiming that statement was evidence of him "projecting" which he wasn't. Furthermore, you have no proof that the person who said that to you was the person you had been arguing, so, not only have you projected your insecurities onto his statement, you've projected your anger from another altercation onto a potentially unrelated person as well.
I think we've cracked the case here, the verdict here is that you're a fucking retard.

>>256181878
I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go. Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake.

I mean, writing skills are important- I do study English lit. myself but I'm also using it in conjunction with tutoring/education. I mean, what are you expecting to do with it? You have to be creative in how you apply the things you get from studying Eng. lit (critical thinking, analyzing written works, knowledge on how to write well and to accomplish a specific purpose, etc etc) because it doesn't necessarily lead to any one specific job.

Same with any humanities degree really though. Get in touch with the professors and network, get in touch with alumni who studied what you're studying. Put the work in and you'll find something, but its not easy. I think that's what people forget about humanities degrees.

Go to any walmart or whatever. Realize not only does that store hire a bunch of workers and supervisors but-
>People have to deliver and load/unload the goods for the stores
>All the refrigerators and air conditioning must be maintained by somebody with those skills
>The lighting must be set and maintained by somebody

This is just a few small examples, but if you look you'll realize there are jobs everywhere. Most people just mindless repeat the mantra of 'DOCTOR, SCIENTIST, LAWYER!!!' or whatever like they are little kids on career day. Instead focus on the real middle level jobs everywhere around you.

So, what the fuck? I've always had a hard time believing anyone that had said "STEM is a trap!". If the arts are shit for work and STEM is shit for work, what isn't? It just sounds like the people that complain about no work are the ones who went to college to get their degree with their sub 2.5 gpa and can't get hired. No shit, if you're a dumb ass with a degree that would normally put you in a position of importance no one is going to hire you.

Don't worry about it. Like it was said earlier, people take jabs at the age but you find you'll have a lot more luck with pulling girls and be a lot maturer compared to other guys around you.

I have barely any game in pulling but even I found it relatively easy to fuck girls around 18-19 because the other guys are still inexperienced as fuck.

All things your teachers will push on you night and day, why? Because its good business. these are the professions with the highest college requirements.

Meanwhile, learning trades, like welding, is an awesome idea, but you don't need college for it, so that's bad for teachers, so they tell you thats its blue collar work, and that its settling for less, despite being in critical demand right now.

Try asking your third grade teacher if they remember you. Ask them a few questions to see if they aren't bullshiting. They don't give a fuck about you, and just regurgitate whatevers good for business.

Hey man, don't knock your Humanities major just yet. Alot of jobs just require you to have a piece of paper from college. I personally wouldn't have gone with that but whatever.

As for the trades, I can't say. I belong to a single trade and know next to nothing about the others. I do know that the money you'll be making from most trades can be quite high, in the 6 figure range even if you are pro/own your own trade business. You should just take those jobs into consideration is all I'm saying, people just don't realize that those sorts of positions exist everywhere because they need to.

Fuck, just think of what you like to do. I really love fixing computer related shit, be it hardware or software. Then, consider the rest of your talents. This shit happens practically everywhere. Maybe a bit less in fields where getting a place is tough as shit already, but it still does happen.

Could be worse I guess...

I have a stereotypical overweight, unmotivated nerd in my major(graphic design) and he spends 99% of his time talking about ANIMUZOMGPOWERLEVELZ and once did an image of his sister claiming, "we're raising her to be a nerd girl I GAVE HER THE SHARINGUN."

You don't need to get a college degree to be successful, hell maybe some employers will give you extra benefits for serving in the army, why not become a police officer or fireman? Hell maybe you should just stay in the army.

>>256190782
Nah, I read the sticky and I was hardly intimidated, drawing isn't hard, just repetitive, there's just a shit ton of grinding and studying your fundamentals, but basically it goes like this:
>Pick one of the good books to start out with, hampton, vlippu, Loomis, Burne, etc
>Fucking study it, learn the fundamentals over and over, keep practicing
>Once you think you got the hang of it, study the next book that covers the same topic
>Rince and repeat until you studied them all and think you're ready to move on, then do the same thing over and over
>Always ask for critiques, redlines and good advice on /ic/ and other communities

Honestly, the hardest part about drawing isn't trying to learn it, it's bringing yourself to learn it, procrastination is a bitch. But the end result years down the road will always leave you thinking it was worth it.

Not the person you replied to, but commonly something completely different is meant by signals and systems, more along the lines of the stuff needed for control systems. Heavy on complex analysis.

I'm studying EE with a minor in CS and here EE get's signals and systems (quite a crucial part) while CS can take an elective for 1 small course on it that is very dumbed down, which is done for the purpose of a second elective on image recognition.

I'd say musician or concept artist would be your best bet. If you can sign yourself a contract with a company you could be making nice cash.
I wouldn't waste my time with college if you have enough discipline to self teach yourself, unless a college degree is mandatory (doubt it), in that case do it.
