I want to buy a gaming PC, preferably a laptop since I like to play games in my living room.
I hear alienwares are shit, (and also rather expensive) So I need to know what I should buy that can play all the new games, at good graphics, but not too expensive.
Also I'd like to see your guys setups.
Bump because I am also interested in a gaming laptop for on the go.
You fucking dipshit
You just said you like playing in your living room, so i suggest i cheaper and better alternative to a 'gaming laptop',
And now you say you want do gaming outside, or on the go?
Go be retarded elsewhere
>I want to buy a gaming PC, preferably a laptop
Something using the Mini ITX form factor and maybe one of those short ass GTX 760 minis
Get ASUS ROG, they sell good stuff. I bought one myself because I travel between 2 places weekly and I had the choice to either not play vidya for 4 days of the week or build 2 desktop computers.
Unless you heavily value graphics the power most provide is more than enough.
I'm not a faggot like OP I already have a gayman PC.
I am in the market for a reliable laptop for my graduate school classes. Should I grab a thinkpad?
A combination desktop and netbook is cheaper and you will be more satisfied in the long run. I drank the "gaming laptop" Kool-Aid years ago in college and got a piece of shit that overheated constantly and could never spend two hours off battery. It ended up dying just after my warranty expired a little over a year later so all that money went down the hole.
I ended up dragging my desktop to my dorm anyway and was much more satisfied. I later bought a netbook for cheap and was extremely satisfied with its 5 hour battery life. Plus I can play all the games from my classic PC game backlog. Best of all, I'm still using it 3 years later.
I have to do statistic work and other things for accounting so yeah a tablet wouldn't work.
Fuck they are? What do you recommend?
Why do neckbeards hate laptops? Too poor to get a good one?
Mine sits on a docking station when I'm at home, and also travels with me. It also plays pretty much everything on ultrafuckyoumax settings.
The most hilarious part is that I bet a lot of you fags telling him to build a PC are running i5's or less.
I think you´d be better off with a mini PC instead of a laptop.
Laptops good enough for gaming (Without overheating problems) will cost you a lot more than a self built mid-range rig in a small form factor.
Seriously...Don´t go for laptops...
>Why do neckbeards hate laptops? Too poor to get a good one?
Because they are overpriced, so I can understand why they dislike them. The main problem I see is that they dont seem to understand that it some cases its a good investment.
In OPs case it sounds like he´s just gonna sit in the living room with it so a mini build would be far cheaper and stronger for him.
Unless he plans to take it outside or game on the go I don´t see how a laptop is a good idea.
I have a dumb question but, I was trying a friend's laptop he just bought for gaming. His keyboard kept ignoring some keystrokes. Is this a laptop issue or a technical error?
>Why do neckbeards hate laptops? Too poor to get a good one?
Bad experiences. I had one with constant overheating problems and the battery life while playing games was about 2 hours maximum. That was about 7 years ago so they've probably improved
But it's not really necessary to own one because modern PC games suck or have low requirements and there's a ton of old games you can play. I don't have an urge to play Crysis 3 laptop or not.
I drive 1.75 hours to my university which is in city X while I live in city Y.
I obviously dont wanna spend 3.5h a day to just get from one place to the other so from Monday-Thursday I live in city X, and from Friday-Saturday I live in city Y. So, in terms of gaming I now have the option to
1) Buy a gaming laptop
2) Buy two desktop PCs
3) Not play any vidya for 4 days of the week (not an option)
So please, dont tell me how much better a tablet is.
>game on the go
There's nothing that you could play on the go that would require top-tier parts. You'd look like a moron playing with like a mouse and a cooling pad (which you will need) in public. Anything else (like frequent travel) can work just fine with a small-form-factor PC and (if needed) monitor.
I'm just going to share my story here.
>working in tech support
>get call from customer
>Really fucking angry
>Excuse me but I bought 2 Titan Zs for SLI and neither of them have the drivers included and I can't get them to work with XP 64 Bit.
>tell guy that we have drivers on the site
>"No, you don't understand. I want the physical drivers that are listed on your site. This is bullshit. If you don't send some out to me for free I'll sue you for false advertisement."
>genuinely convinced this is a prank call (We've never had anyone call in for Titan Z support /ever/)
>uuhhhh sure, can I have your serial number?
>sure it's ********
>look it up, valid
>customer even confirms his address & name
this guy is legit
>look up on account
>this guy has 2 Titan Z's
>and is using windows XP 64 bit
>mfw he can't even use DirectX 11
my sides left orbit
cheap keyboards can only process so many keys held in at once, this is called "key rollover" with x-Key Rollover being how many buttons can be held at once.
sometimes even a keyboard with better-than-usual rollover might have cut corners on less-used keys.
try it yourself, hold in both shift keys and write THE QUICK BROWN DOG JUMPS OVER THE LAZY FOX
how low do part prices go on black friday/cyber monday?
might buy the parts at the end of november since theres rumors of the 800 series coming out in October
Does anybody actually know when the 800 series releases?
Or if you already have it you can take your god damn phone... Seriously I got the "tegra exclusive" half life 2 to run on my One m7. Now I just need a discrete controller and I can play. There´s tons of good games on mobile now not even counting emulation which at this point can even play a some gamecube games.
I feel bad for you anon, if you have these kind of idiots every day.
If you're going to buy a gaming laptop make sure you put a copper shim between the GPU's diode and the heatsink with thermal compound on each side. I experienced a ~15C temp decrease on my shitty 5 year old ASUS laptop after doing this because of poor heatsink pressure. Also make sure the fan runs at 5200 RPM constantly by cutting the fan's blue wire or through software. Most software won't recognize laptop fans.
Alienwares aren't shit, they're computers just like anything else and will work fine.
Alienwares are shit BECAUSE they're so expensive.
You can easily buy a laptop that matches their performance for well under $500 less.
>pixel perfect guarantee
>people now have to pay money to not have dead pixels
Stop being so poor that you have to accept situations you dislike. If I would want to play handheld trash I would play handheld trash so spare me with your mentally challenged logic.
Autistic people on 4chan don't understand that some people want a gaming laptop that travels with them, because "m-muh gaming PC" and saving money.
If you can afford a gaming laptop just ignore all the shitposting and check out something like ASUS or Newegg (more variety, likely cheaper). Yeah, gaming laptops are expensive but 4chan is hilariously autistic when it comes to doing ANYTHING but building your own desktop.
>forcing a fan to run at 100% all the time
>cutting a wire to do so
>these are the people on /v/ who call themselves master race these days
What are you using it for specifically? If it's just standard MS Office type shit, I suggest an Acer C720. It's a cheap as fuck chromebook, surprisingly speedy for what it does, never heats up and has like a 9 hour battery life.
>cheap gaming PC
>unnecessarily expensive gaming laptop
is a better way to put it
Desktop fags pretend laptops can't perform well when it comes to gaming. They can't perform AS well.
All of the mocking comes from the fact that if you get a gaming laptop, you're spending probably 3-5x the amount of money for about 80% the performance or less.
>people telling you that you're getting a bad deal are autistic shitposters
>modern game worth playing
Any competitive title out there, Divinity Original Sin, Mark of the Ninja, Valdis Story...
I can just go on and list a few hundred. Since when do I need Ultra graphics and 4K to enjoy games? I dont even play garbage that requires strong rigs because they never are decent games anyway.
Anon its 10 pounds. If you cant transport that from A to B then you have a serious health problem.
>Anon its 10 pounds. If you cant transport that from A to B then you have a serious health problem.
trust me, it's too big and unweidly to carry wound with you
you will soon wish for something lighter and pocket size
The only reason its a bad deal is because you get less power. The thing you dont seem to understand is that you get portability and a screen in return. You cant just ignore that and say "Lol I can haz same powah for half price XD".
I have been fucking doing it for 2 years and didnt regret it for a single second.
Whats your point? You said "modern game". Last time I checked that term doesnt equal 360 MLG PRO graphix.
Those are modern games and they sure as hell are worth playing.
Strawman. They are unoptimized but are capable of doing the same things as desktops in almost all cases that you'll need them for if you're interested in getting a laptop / feel you need to get a laptop instead of a desktop
I've had my laptop for going on five years and it can still perform moderately (but that's a problem desktops run into, obviously, when it comes to replacing components as things modernize) and have only had several problems.
No, people austisically shitposting and pretending that if you buy a laptop you're an imbecile and your legtitmacy as a fan of video games are autistic shitposters.
What makes a game worth playing on a desktop over a laptop? That's a pretty loaded word.
I don't know why it's important that it be modern, but if you're going to do LAN parties with your buddies there is plenty of shit you can play on a laptop.
>trust me, it's too big and unweidly to carry wound with you
Fucker laptops are lighter than some of the textbooks you're going to lug around EVERY DAY at a university.
I've carried my laptop around in my backpack for four years along with my physics / csci / math textbooks and I don't care at all.
Ouch, you really got him with that one
How does it feel being a bigoted ass because you think owning a certain type of computer makes you superior?
>Buy a mid-range gaming laptop for 1.2k
>Runs absolutely everything at 1080p, just have to turn down the graphical settings in some of the most demanding games.
>Plug it into outlet on the train I ride for hours every week.
>Get LOADS of use out of it
>/v/ still insists that I'm only having artificial fun
>At the end of the day I always return home to a gaming desktop more powerful than all the anti-laptop faggots have anyways.
It's no use discussing laptops. /v/ is so cancerous and casual that they actually suggest tablets before laptops. This transcends the run-of-the-mill cocksuckery you usually see here. I'd actually recommend joining a forum for this kind of discussion to be honest. And I fucking hate forums.
>Fucker laptops are lighter than some of the textbooks you're going to lug around EVERY DAY at a university.
>lugging around textbooks when you can just pirate the pdf's
yep, you are retarded
you can search for specific models and check out reviews and details as well as benchmarks
if i've learned anything from this website it's that the only way to differentiate a good laptop from a shit on is based solely on the videocard inside it
have fun researching
or if you dont want to the lenovo y560 (or something like that is supposed to be good)
>How does it feel being a bigoted ass because you think owning a certain type of computer makes you superior?
I'm on a laptop right now
I just trying to save him the agony of owning a shitop
>trying to learn material out of a pdf
>doing homework out of a pdf
>trying to study using a pdf
I'm just gonna keep spending $20 on international versions of my books when I can, thanks.
>/v/ is entirely composed of a single group of like-minded people
Always bring up the worst example to prove your point. I guess there arent any fashion brands apart from Gucci, selling white tshirts for $200 and GAP either.
or you could get one of these and stop being a faggot
I mean, I can see it being viable on a tablet, but I couldn't study using a smartphone. Although buying a tablet is another story entirely.
I'm in physics + CSCI, I like to be able to really see a lot of pages and once because there's a lot involved with that kind of stuff. Having a laptop for my programming assignments while I have my book beside me is really helpful. Being able to have a larger book and seeing large segments of sample code or a big derivation is pretty helpful too.
As for my electives yeah, I generally get digital copies of the books.
I like my laptop because I can do the above things alone, or with a group of friends, and then seamlessly transition into playing RTS or what have you on the fly while we're all hanging out in our study group, when we're done with our work.
I'm not going to go to my friend group / study group, and pull out a small laptop, a tablet, and then go to my car, bring my desktop in with me, then go back and grab my monitor, speakers + keyboard + mouse and set ALL of that up.
They aren't worthless. They're just not a necessity for a lot of lifestyles. Many, many university students benefit from paying a little extra for a convenience. Many don't. It all depends on how you plan to live / travel / study, and you can't blanket that kind of experience or request with a simple "laptops are shit, period".
> We're sorry. This item can't be shipped to your selected destination. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order.
so mad right now because if the shipping rate was good i was gonna press buy
I know everyone is going to rip on you for gayman laptops but let me give you some advice for someone who actually got one not too long ago.
I believe I have the exact same model as your picture, at least it's externals. They change it every year with slightly better processors and intergrated graphics cards.
Alienware gayman laptops were always shit and optimized for no better than 720p
That computer in your picture has by far one of the most impressive laptop coolant systems i've ever seen, because of it's over ride program.
No bullshit thirdparty software to change the fan, you press that button on the dash above the F# keys and your fan goes maximum power.
Loud as fuck, but almost entirely unnoticeable when using headphones.
Actually now that i think about it, the laptop i have also has a finger pad disable button (and honesty the intention and placement is a lot better than most computers so your left palm doesn't activate it while typing) but even then you press that button and the pad is completely disabled so only an external mouse will work.
After nearly 2 years of intense use my process or and GPU idle at around 40C. For a laptop, that's impressive.
You should be able to, at this point, find a refurbished laptop with 4GB DDR3 equivalent graphics for under 1000 dollars. It's 3DMark Score would hover around 7500-8500.
Nearly any modern game would function just fine at 1080 on high settings with maybe 2x or 4x AA.
My only real qualms with their laptops are their unimpressive sound cards, built in speakers, and the fact that the dimmest settings for screen brightness are still fairly bright. For non-gaman purposes the things can last 4-6 hours on battery.
If you need a laptop for other purposes but also want a gaming PC, it may be a valid an economical compromise but only if you absolutely need a laptop for other functions.
Even the best gaming laptop will last less than an hour if playing a high-stress game if on maximum performance.
A gaming laptop is not to be understood as a portable gaming device but an easily movable one.
It's the size (and weight) of a textbook and can be carried as such until you get to a new stationary area with an outlet in reach.
No such thing.
Do your fucking research and look for for a laptop to suit all your needs because that's what they're for, not for fucking gaming just light casual gaming shit.
>dead pixel insurance
>that kind of processor in a laptop
>fucking 32GB of RAM holy fucking shit
>TWO GTX 880M's,
>THATS TWO FUCKING BABBY TITANS IN A LAPTOP
>A 1TB hard drive
>A Second 1TB partition harddrive
>A Third partition
>A Fourth partition
>presumably also a 5th and 6th partition
>nigga going to have Windows 7, XP Black, OSX 10, Ubutnu, and Gentoo on the same fucking laptop.
>will probably explode upon activation
>Many laptops are made a certain way
>Laptops made a certain way overheat and damage the battery
>Therefore, all laptops overheat and damage the battery
But please, keep projecting and trying to prove to yourself and only yourself that having a desktop computer is in some way, shape, or form, superior to having a laptop computer.
>it is true
>the same thing happened to me twice
You know, I got struck by lightning last year, and it happened again this year.
Did you know that literally every person on earth is struck by lightning at least once every year?
Sorry for your loss but that doesn't make your claim less stupid
My gayam laptop similar to OP's picture has been constantly plugged in for about 2 years now. Absolutely zero issues. Even on hibernate I just leave the plug in.
A previous laptop that was for college is 5 years old now. It is now the default "home PC" that my family in general uses in the living room. It's also been plugged in most of it's life.
That one also has no issues other than a slowly increasing idle temperature average of it's processor.
Some batteries from some companies are simply shit and die regardless.
OP said he wanted a gaming PC, "preferably a laptop", and people are trying to convince him to not get a laptop, and get an ordinary gaming PC instead. I don't see the problem here.
Can't tell you much about the entire spectrum except that I bought me an Asus N5550JK and I'm happy.
1080p IPS, aluminum, and an NVIDIA Maxwell. Threw a 480GB SSD in it and it's feeling like heaven.
You're forgetting one of the big reasons why gaming laptops are shite, which is short battery life and the overheating. Even if you have the money to blow, they aren't really that portable anyway.
If you have an android phone you can just get a moga controller for ~$50 and get the same results. There's even a streaming app called Limelight that tricks your desktop into thinking it's an nvidia shield and it works exactly the same.
Dust the insides every once in a while. I do it every 6 months, or earlier if temps are creeping up (this has never happened to me though). Physically, that's about all you have to do.
