Ok, so the game itself in the course of normal play gives you a bunch of emotes that aren't really used but that are shown off to you. The emote controls are always the same. In the end sequence the evil enemy characters break into a song and dance routine where in they perform the various emote actions which are now all revealed to be their training you to take part in this elaborate song and dance routine.

The final action in the game has them inviting you to join them. You can select yes and sing a verse of your own. Or you can say no in which case they simply walk off dejectedly.

Think of it like West Side Story but you aren't trying to kill anyone. The more stylish your dances the better your score. Maybe toss in some rhythm mechanics if you want but would that ruin your attempted dance combo, or would it make it better since you'd have to dance to a certain beat?

I think I should actually answer the question of why there are no musical games, so that we can work around them and come up with a concept of a musical game that will actually work.

I think that there are two main ones:

1. lack of choreography. Musicals tend to be VERY closely choreographed, and if you want the player to have any freedom at all (which you do, don't you? this is a GAME after all, not an interactive movie or some shit), it will be hard to choreograph their unpredictable actions with the predetermined and preprogrammed ones that the rest of the cast does. I guess there are rhythm games, but that only kinda counts.

2. Video game voice acting is INFAMOUSLY bad. Getting VAs who can actually SING? Forget about it.

This isn't the 90's. If somebody spends the money and takes the effort they can get a star studded cast. Or if they're great at discovering good choices, they can find nobodies who can do it perfectly.

That first issue is true though. Maybe rely on all the NPCs to work through that and let the player try and fill their own role? Try to find some way to work their coreography into their basic animations for walking/fighting/etc.

You know, if the characters in Mario games weren't so fucking shallow, I'll bet you could do a great musical off of that. I guess the biggest problem is Mario himself; he's just a complete and total non-character. Also, dramatic singing in an Italian accent would be just silly. Might work in an OPERA, but not really in a musical. Also, Peach's current voice is nauseating, and would probably drive me insane if I had to listen to her singing.

But still, I'm just imagining the possibilities and really liking them
