Ayyyy let's get a Mother thread in here. Does anyone here actually think they'll finish mother 4? I've seen a lot of fan made projects fall apart. Although they do have a lot of momentum with it, but it could still fall apart if they realized their story was shit or that the project was a much bigger undertaking than they originally thought. Also Mother 2 is the best in the series. This strawpoll will prove it. http://strawpoll.me/2213561
Gosh darn, why did they have to name this game Mother 4. Totally not tubular to the creators! It should've gone by a new handle. GOSH!
There I save you the trouble of the usual posts.
just started mother 1 im by the haunted house, grinding up a a bit because I didn't want to use the easy ring
already went through once trying to find the path but got lost
havent really used many PK spells, any tips on what are good ones?
I don't really know or care that much about Mother 4. If it's good, that's great, if it's not then oh well it's just some fangame.
From what I've seen from the screenshots it seems like Mother 3.2 which is okay I guess but every Mother game has a significantly different design. Even 1 and 2 despite them being similar in many ways. I'll just wait and see.
>Does anyone here actually think they'll finish mother 4?
Probably, or else all their work they've already done will have been for nothing.
It's just until Winter, anyway, but I wouldn't be surprised about a delay with how often they cut things or because of staff changes.
>Also Mother 2 is the best in the series
>not Mother 1
May not have the best gameplay (that goes to Mother 3), but it always felt like it had the best presentation, at least to me.
It's a Mother fangame, so I doubt anyone cares.
In other news:
>Mother anniversary passes by
>absolutely nothing announced
>no Smash, no rereleases, no nothing
C'mon, Reggie, give us Mother 3.
>Mother 2 is the only one we played, so yeah.
I seriously hope you mean "the only one that was officially translated".
I can't wait until Mother 4 is actually released and Nintendo issues a cease and desist letter, asking them to remove it from the internet.
It'd be glorious, all those pissed off devs getting rectum rumbled like that rightfully should because they used a copyrighted name as their title.
Mother 4 is looking good so far, devs seem competent.
Except the second it's released, people will have downloaded it, and if it gets a cease and desist, people will just share the download.
This thread's probably going to die off anyway, but you've got a responsibility to post the rest.
Some friendly anon was nice enough to give me this link, so I'll pass it on. Enjoy.
If they get a C&D before release, they already have a backup plan to remove the Mother element since the game can stand well enough on its own. If they get a C&D afterwards, the dev team will possibly do the above anyway and rerelease it while the masses circulate Mother 4 for all to enjoy.
The game is happening, Mother or not.
Yeah fangame devs post on /v/, there has been proof before where they posted some animations for the PSI attacks and stuff. Either devs or friends of devs, but I'm positive they come here to... share their proggress with us? I wouldn't say viral because it's a free game, so yeah.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were here right now.
Also, they're probably the ones that always fight back all the people bitching about the name, since I don't think normal people that aren't involved in the project really give that much of a fuck as to get into internet fight over a fan game's name unless they're serious apologistic beta faggots.
I lurk just about every Mother thread I can find, cause I don't usually look for more images to save.
I know there's a Mexican guy who's translating the game as a personal project, and some other guy who sang Pollyanna(?) to his ex-girlfriend who also regular threads.
>and some other guy who sang Pollyanna(?) to his ex-girlfriend
That made me feel awkward
Wasn't it in the Jap version of Earthbound where one of the randomized "favorite foods" would be Dog Food?
Super Mario 63, Super Mario Bros. X, Zelda - Parallel Words, Zelda Classic, SSF2, SSBC, any Super Metroid hack, any SMW hack, and any Kirby fangame
they are all not Cease and Desisted and you forgot that Nintendo is fine with fan creations as long it's not being made for profit. Same for Sega and maybe Capcom. Stop thinking Nintendo is Square Enix you tearsfag
Duane and Brand0 will never EVERfinish Earthbound
I just started playing Earthbound last night because Platinum reward. Never touched it or know anything about the series besides giygas is a fetus or some creepy pasta shit and its because the creator walked in on an adult movie as a kid.
Im not sure if its the SNES sounds or the way the characters talk, but everything about the game so far feels really uncomfortable. Is it meant to be this way?
I always wanted to play through Earthbound but I always get stuck around the second town because I'm apparently a fucking idiot. Am I supposed to meet Paula somewhere? Am I supposed to get past that pencil thing somehow?
>They went to the trouble to translate Murasame castle and release it in the West before releasing an official translation for Mother 1 and 3
Nintendo doesn't give a fuck about Mother, or it's anniversary unfortunately.
Depends on what part you mean. In some instances, it is supposed to make you uncomfortable, but it could always just be the game not being for you.
Just started mother 3 and im up to chapter 2. im having a hard time comboing though and this Duster section in the castle is not my favorite. i just received that battle book thing that lets you practice fighting enemies. i've died multiple times here but in the first chapter, i didn't have any problems. anyone have some insight about comboing? i know to use the hypnosis thing to hear the enemy heartbeats, but the timing just seems off to me. its weird, because generally speaking i'm good at rhythm games and i like to think that i have good rhythm. could it possibly be because im emulating? also does this Duster section get better becaus

I'm having a hard time in Threed guys. My party is level 26, 24 and 23 but the zombie dogs and the ghosts keep kicking my ass. Money is not an issue for recovering in the hotel but what do you all reccomend? Which level should I be at?
I'm currently grinding but I don't know what's a good level to have.
>Everything up til now has given this uncomfortable vibe.
You, literally and figuratively, ain't seen nothing yet.
Emulating has some issues which make it more difficult. If you have VBA-M, go into the audio settings, then Output API, and then click the settings for the one you're using. Set the sound buffer to 2 frames to make it easier.
It's still not perfect though. Most songs have a background beat that you can use to easily get 9-10 hit combos going.
That fades away pretty shortly, and then comes back up for a little bit at select parts. It's intentional.
I'm pretty sure playing on an emulator does often screw around with the timing for fights. Don't let it bother you, it's simple enough to beat it without ever comboing at all.
Mother threads are the only thread I actually contribute to
I honestly thought chapter 3 was one of the most refreshing changes of pace in any game I've ever played. It helps that all of the things that happen in it are interesting enough to keep the gimmick going on for as long as it does.
Well in that case thanks for your contribution
Spam PK ice and fire
Dogs are weak to ice and Zombies are weak to fire.
I know this because it's my least favorite part of the game and I like to get through it quickly as possible
Why do people always draw Teddy with such a stupid fucking haircut?
Just grind for a little bit, if I remember correctly I beat that area at around level 30 something. As long as you hurry along to the next area to fight
Belchyou should be done pretty soon.
Does anyone have any good Mother reaction images?
I've got 2
I am the guy who posted that first picture, and yeah, I'm also annoyed by that, but there's almost no Teddy fanart, so I save it anyway.
All i've got
>that doesn't mean that I entirely have faith in a product made my a rag-tag group of fans.
oh, understandably, I don't entirely either. there's a good chance it's going to be shit, but I can see why they named it what they did. I appreciate the confidence, at least.
Also, Itoi never said "I want fans to make a game".
Also, Itoi said Mother 4 is Animal Crossing.
Or that a theatre play could be Mother 4.
Or that all the lives of all the people who played the Mother series is Mother 4.
Even if Mother 4 is shit, some of the music so far is great.
Seriously, this sounds like what would happen if they asked FlyLo to do Earthbound music:
>Mother 2's American release
>Mother 3's anniversary
Either Sakurai finally decided to just get rid of everything Mother in Kerfuffle or he's preparing to drop a bomb on us.
are these sprites rough drafts that got worked to the final designs or do the characters change and age throughout the game? I'd be really interested to play this if it was the latter.
The quintessential "good for it's time, irritating now" entry in the series.
It's like the one debut album of a group that a lot of people grow to like for their later work, except that its a shoegaze album where half of the tracks are just feedback.
>so even if it sucks we won't really have any valid reason to bitch about it.
Future MOTHER threads will be the clashing of people who hated the game and people who liked it.
not everybody here is a 17 year old, I played a lot of NES RPGs, Mother 1 isn't irritating to play.
They're improvements over the time the fangame has been worked on.
Even if it's good, that'll happen.
If you've played any RPG from any console after the NES, going back to Mother 1 on the NES is essentially like playing Skyrim on PC and then going back to Adventure on the Atari 2600.
I've played Mother 1 on the NES several times. That game needs a remake pretty desperately.
The random encounters are the only thing I really dislike about it. I kind of prefer some of the story elements/atmosphere in Mother 1.
The lack of random encounters was one of the biggest fixes EB did.
>Future MOTHER threads will be the clashing of people who hated the game and people who liked it.
I'm really really not looking forward to that.
As someone who doesn't give a flying shit about fan games, the whole Mother 4 shitstorm really upsets me because it deviates actual discussion about the series and turns Mother thread into piles of shitposting, and the worst part is, it's very easy for trolls to come and derail a thread by simply mentioning the fan game.
Even though I don't give a fuck and I think both, the people who defend the game and those who are against it are retarded, for giving a fan game this much of an importance, I'm more on the side of the people who think they should change the name. Not because I'm offended or because I think they're disrespectful to itoi or some shit like that, but simply because, if they finally gave up and changed the name, then it would be just another fan game, like all the other Mother fangames there is, it wouldn't derail threads and turn them into shit. Something so simple could save Mother discussion, it's not even funny. And yeah, they won't change it, and yes, we will have Mother 4 shitstorms once its released.
I miss 2008 Mother threads on /v/.
In a few months Mother threads will be like Fallout threads.
>for giving a fan game this much of an importance
It's getting this much importance because it's the only fan project out there that has a genuine chance of seeing release anytime soon. I feel like that warrants at least a little bit of discussion, assuming the thing doesn't get C&D'd for the name.
Well too bad, because random encounters are common in many older RPGs, even on the SNES/Megadrive, not only the NES.
I don't know about the comparision between Skyrim with Adventure, whatever, Mother 1 is not irritating to play, only hipsters who never played any older NES RPG think Mother 1 is bad... it's a standard 8 bit RPG. In fact, it's fairly better than most other classics like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, the fact you can move in 8 directions on the map field makes it a lot more enjoyable.
You kids seriously need to get your head out of your underage asses and play more old games to have a perspective. you sound like those kids who won't play anything that isn't HD.
I have an emulator question that slightly ties into the Mother series. When I'm playing Mother 1+2 on the visualboy, the music distorts when a really high note is played.
This only recently started happening ever since I had to restart after my save was lost, is there any way to fix this or am I just going to have to put up with this?
It's honestly the first possibility I thought of
The only way to give a "valid" opinion of something is to remove the concept of value that you paid/didn't pay for it to begin with, as that clouds judgement
I meant that because it's free we'll have less reasons to hate it if it turns out bad, aside from having to wait 5 years or so. Speaking of which why is it taking this long again? It better be a long game.
>I miss 2008 Mother threads on /v/.
Sure you do.
Even if it doesn't start out with one game vs. another it dissolves into that.
I've seen /v/ have legit discussion about games before with little to no shitposting it just saddens me a little.
I got some of that too, but I found that if you just switch the music back and forth (going into the menu and back out) it'll be fine.
Unless you're talking about the music being sped up when certain things are selected, in that case I think you have to put up with it.
What about all the SNES/Megadrive and others older RPGs that also have random encounters, they're all bad?
Even RPGs from the 5th and 6th gen have random encounters.
Hell, there's still games released today that have random encounters.
Earthbound fans got spoiled because in Mother 2 and 3 you can see enemies on the map field, but not every RPG is like that.
>you sound like those kids who won't play anything that isn't HD.
I'm gonna be honest here, I've got a decent NES library but I don't plan on adding any RPGs to it any time soon. There's too many good games on the NES that don't require constant interruption by random encounters and grinding out the ass.
Okay so I just played it for a little bit for the first time and so far I'm liking it. The battle system isn't my favorite at all but the whole vibe and charm and music really is amazing.
Because he was lucky enough to be around for it
I can't comment on those because I haven't played any in depth enough and generally stay away from games like it besides Final Fantasy, which I do think is shit. It's not bad solely because of random encounters, but it is annoying and with the other elements makes a game that's extremely slow paced and not very fun to play. I still enjoyed Mother 1, but it's extremely polarizing and could use some improvements..
>a weird fuck
It isn't really that weird when you consider what they've been through the entire game.
Guys, I just tried something in Mother 3
After you get Duster in Saturn Valley, you can visit the Clayman Factory where you first got your Commander clothes, when you get there, the factory is not only deserted, but it's playing a very sad and eerie melody, caught me off guard.
And then next thing I go to the front door and there are two Pigmasks that run away from me after they notice me
Well to be fair we'll never know how that scene played out since we haven't seen it all. Maybe Lucas would've stared in pure confusion and sadness.
Anyways, is it me or is the EarthBound ending really depressing? I could never put my finger on why, but it just depresses me.
>I miss you.
>tfw Itoi put that in for his duaghters he couldn't see because of a divorce >tfw they never played the game
The endings for both games really cut deep in certain areas
>mfw denying Motherfags their dumb game
Even the first game did that in a way. Especially so in the Japanese version that lacks the extended ending.
You don't know if defeating giygas actually solved anything and the credits just start rolling
>I found out about this project before I went to highschool
>I've graduated already and its still not out
I personally felt like it was a message to the player that you shouldn't assume someone is great because of the praise they get, rather than what they do and vice versa for apple kid. Also that bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks.
You post this same webm everywhere with the same filename
every single time
He hasn't posted anything beyond that, he's probably dead.
About to play Mother 3 on a phone emulator so I can play on a plane in a few weeks, does anyone know if timed hits will work on it? And are they even needed?
>are they needed
They won't and ehh
Timed attacks are fun to get and do help but it's possible to win without it. Also it's possible to make it have less lag but I don't know how.
>Going to replay Mother 3 in moon rune as my first game in Japanese
>it's all in kana
At this point, this is detrimental. I know a lot of handheld games do this but I didn't think it would fuck me up this much
timed hits on phone are fucked
input latency (you'll most likely play on a touchscreen after all)
the fucking android os has a high latency as well
and some emulators don't sync audio and video, making sound lag after a while
Honestly the only boss I ever felt like I had an issue fighting in Mother 3 was the Jealous Bass. When I beat the game a second time I knew what I did wrong though, so it realistically wasn't a hard fight at all.
Also, Kumatora has the best attacking sounds,
I've never really had a problem with boss fights in this series.
Usually the greatest struggle is at the beginning, and then the rest is a breeze.
Playing through Mother 3 irritated me for some reason. I enjoyed Earthbound though, quite a bit. Mother 3 feels like it's trying too hard to be emotional or something, I can't put my finger on it. I don't know why exactly it rubs me the wrong way. Oh, and Pokey was very disappointing as a villian, I was completely uninterested in his character. I wish they had gone a different direction with the story/antagonist personally.
A lot changed by the time it finally reached the GBA. It was supposed to have been much longer, so it would have had better pacing and given you more time to appreciate the little things.
I think the bigger problem is that Earthbound didn't really have a solid linear story, it was just a bunch of random shit one town after another that sort of tied together. Mother 3 tried to tell a much more focused and compelling narrative, but it still jumped around a lot like Earthbound and ended up feeling kind of strange because of it.
Anyone care to make a Mother BGM for AA2?
I already have some ideas:
>menu music is mother 3's menu music
>sad music is Confused
>weekend music is EB's hotel music (when you wake up)
>neutral theme is home sweet home/whatever pollyanna version you prefer
Anyone got more ideas?
>fapping to mother
Earthbound felt a lot more like an adventure, mainly because you travel around to several locations each with their own little story. The overarching Giygas plot is kind of in the background for most of the game, surfacing at key moments. I feel like Mother 3 also had a lot more wandering around, looking for the next story segment.
>Not fapping to mother
Stop being a pussy.
If you don't realize nothing is sacred, why come to 4chan?
Mother is a game, and nothing more.
I made it a rule to never fap to Ace Attorney characters, but I never whine like a faggot the moment someone sexualizes them in a thread.
The thing that really bugged me about mother 3 was the chapter draught. Chapter 1 was pretty good. 2 was a little worse. 3 was shit. 4 onward was great. Earthbound was like this except the draught was much shorter.
I think that the little branching arcs each town had made it feel like a little cartoon of sorts, and it always tied into the fact of the main point of the adventure through the Sanctuary visiting.
Kinda like the Pokemon anime, where Ash always had to deal with some random ass one-time character but most of the time it contributed to the overall goal of becoming a Pokemon master.
And now I just remembered why Earthbound is my favorite game in the series.
Because it makes me feel like a kid again ;_;
As a HUGE fan of EB (I've replayed EarthBound a dozen times before I played Mother 3), I was kind of disappointed with Mother 3.
However, as time passed by, Mother 3 sorta grew on me. Maybe it's cus to the Love theme. Maybe it's due to all the crazy theories that I came up with that attempt to tie Mother 3 with EB and Mother 1.
There's still one thing that I don't get.
What the hell actually happened in Mother 3?
Was Mother 3 just a dream? Some kind of parallel universe that Pokey got into by screwing with time? And where the hell are Ness and the gang? Why didn't they save the world from whatever destroyed the majority of the world in Mother 3? Why the hell didn't Buzz Buzz warn Ness about the events that take place in Mother 3? And could it be possible that there are multiple Giygases (which explains their different appearances and names), which implies that Mother 1, EB and Mother 3 take place in parallel dimensions? If I'm not mistaken, in EB it's stated on some stone tablet that every thousand years there is an alien invasion. And if this is all true, could this all be the results of Pokey's time travel?
What do you guys think?
Would you guys recommend Earthbound for a nigga like me?
Basically I just don't really like JRPG's, but I was able to get through Mother 3 because of its charm, story, music, and characters alone. Is it worth doing the same with Earthbound even if I don't like the gameplay at its core?
Absolutely. I fucking hate almost every JRPG, especially turn based ones, but I fucking love all the Mother games. Mother 3 is a bit better than Earthbound in my opinion, but Earthbound is still a fantastic game worth a playthrough if you liked Mother 3. It's not nearly as tragic or sad.
>(which explains their different appearances and names)
Chock that up to the (bad) translation of Earthbound Zero. He has the same name, ??? in the first two games.
The difference in appearance is explained by what he devolved into after his initial defeat.
>25 years and still no Mother 3 announcement
Itoi cares, he actually wants someone else to continue the series for him and experience a Mother game not made by him.
He said he wanted to be the player of Mother 4.
He also said he considers everything anyone makes Mother 4, even the world itself.
That's his fancy way of saying "I'm done with this shit" but the autistic fanbase took it literally.
>Lose dozens of times on the first Masked Man fight
>Be the one person on Earth who didn't know
Masked Man was Claus
>Try to search the internet for strategies
redirects "Masked Man" to "Claus"
>Still don't know how to beat the asshole
I'm almost as frustrated as the time someone spoiled
the fake endingin Kid Icarus Uprising
This game is easy as shit, how the hell did you need a guide?
the game for me at least (im not the same as the person you're responding to) fluctuates in difficulty. there were several times where bosses kicked my shit in because they're a huge spike up from the enemies of that area (most notably masked man and jealous bass)
>run into record and coffee cup
I think they will if the amount of work they've seem to have put into it is legitimate. I doubt it'll get a C&D too so there's that. I think it's pretty impressive. Eagleland, too, which I'm more looking forward to. The fanbase is pretty terrible but if that cesspit of hipster autism spawns two good games then
>get stuck on Miracle Fassad
>search his article up on the Earthbound wiki for strategies
>right in the fucking introduction statement it says he's
Locria, the last Magypsy
>they didn't even bother to put a spoiler warning anywhere
It's not that much of a spoiler, but it ruined any feels I could've gotten when I
saw his shell house in Porky's building.
When I discovered the "unused endings" of mother 3 on youtube.
>finally take the time to play Earthbound
>love the living shit out of it
>play for hours
>accidentally delete save file
>can't bring myself up to start all over again
I had just arrived in Fourside. I feel like I missed out of something extraordinary...
THANK YOU MY NIGGA
Seriously I'm smiling so hard right now. You made my week. Thank you thank you thank you
Not him, but I was emulating Mother while browsing, tried to save a pic by dragging it onto my desktop, and the mouse went over the emulator when I unclicked.
So I just beat Mother 3 last night after powering through it over the weekend. I liked it even more than Earthbound though the ending after the credits (walking around in the dark) was kinda confusing and underwhelming. Was I supposed to know who was saying what somehow? Did Claus come back to life or something? Was he the one thanking me? What about Hinawa? Did everything reset to a 'new' reality or were the people just living in a barren wasteland of the island from then on?
I got a Teddy figure, if you're referring to the banpresto figs.
It's very nice and just like the original clay model.
I'd like to buy a Starman figure but they're kinda pricey plus I don't want to get addicted to collecting toys too.
Because most of us understand that these threads are for talking about the game and not shitposting?
top is Lucas, middle is Ness, lower is Ninten
I decided to get it because the Mother series has been a huge influence on me has a person. I've also played through it with my little sister, and two of my best friends, all at different times. being an RPG fan I fell in love with these games.
tangent, but important; when I was younger I always listened to video game soundtracks instead of normal musical artists. the music of Mother games inspired me so much that I taught myself piano to play the songs. I also got really into The Beatles because of these games, which led me to learning guitar and songwriting. I'm not that great anymore but playing music and (more recently) writing has helped me through all the crazy shit life throws at me. I have Mother to thank for starting the fire for me
>used up all of my mementos fighting him
>lose to mushroom guy on tanetane
>thought the snake was an enemy so I didn't save
>"fuck it, I'll reload that save state I made underwater"
>most recent state was on the beach before going in, one hour gone
>this had already happened in the volcano when Fassad used up mementos since I didn't realize there was a boss coming up and had no psi and little health
>back in saturn village, 2 hours gone
>these and other happenings caused me to lose about 5 hours to save states during the playthrough
save states, n e v e r a g a i n
You posted this a few days ago, didn't you? Anyway, it's a decent set of tats. Vague enough that nobody's going to call you a nerd. Placement could be better, though. Long sleeves for you, I guess.
in light of the proverbial "git gud" you all gave me, I gave the fight another shot just now and beat it.
So, thanks for the calling me casual, everyone! It actually helped.
>Travis + Meryl + rich brat + guy with shitty hair
Oh man, this shit can be great
yuh I lurk /v/ all the time and post it every now and again. thanks man, I really like the minimalism stuff. I plan on getting more inspiration pieces done, not a sleeve but ya know
goddammit yes all the time
Jealous Bass is easily the hardest boss of the entire series from my experience.
Maybe I was just underleveled, but holy shit Jealous Bass deals so much damage to both Lucas and Boney faster than you can deal with his cronies.
I'be been playing Earthbound for the first time. Just saved Threed from the zombies, now going to fourside.
I just can't get why the game is so good. It's so simple. But it works so damn well.
>Was I supposed to know who was saying what somehow?
I think a good chunk of it was obvious from the context, but some was ambiguous.
>Did Claus come back to life or something? Was he the one thanking me? What about Hinawa?
Sadly I don't think that was ever said. I'm inclined to say no, but that's not confirmed.
>Did everything reset to a 'new' reality or were the people just living in a barren wasteland of the island from then on?
No, they said the world was good again. How good wasn't fully said, but it wasn't a barren wasteland.
It's the presentation, writing, and music. The gameplay itself is fine, but as you said it's simple. Itoi's creative sense is what makes this game appealing. It's also why I totally understand when people are like "Why do people like these games." If the style doesn't appeal to you, they're really not going to be special.
Personally, these games stir something inside of me. I find them inspiring.
Set the audio buffer to 2 frames in VBA-M. It helps a bit.
Also, don't try to combo to the melody if you're trying that. That was my first instinct when starting. Listen to the background tempo.
It makes me feel something as well, but I can't quite put my finger on it.
The whole tematic is cool, especially for a SNES game. No epic saga with knights and heroes, just four kids traveling through the wicked world. But there's something... more.
I had played Mother 3, but stop at a hard boss. I don't like emulating so much.
Playing it on a Wii U is being a blast. I even grind a lot to go through stuff without much trouble (but still get some, the game is very demanding).
