I'm always put off by the fact that the books are never even written by the same people who wrote the game. What's the point? Same goes for spin off comic books of movies and games. This is even more egregious when they kill off the main character in a comic, and they are never mentioned in the sequels ever again. Fuck you crytek

Adaptations are kind of lame.

I would read the Kingdom Hearts novels, but only to see how the author rendered the characters and what new scenes they came up with.

Other than that, the only video game novels I have interest in are novels which take place within the world, but are not stories from the game (see: Elder Scrolls, BioShock, Halo, etc.). Expanded universe type stuff.

Start writing. Is it shit? Of course it is. Find out why it's shit. Don't do that. Repeat until you produce something worth other people's time. There you go.

>Though I seem more interested in just writing lore for a world.

I know what you mean, whenever I try to write a plot I always end up thinking why are certain things that way, like the equipment, architecture and other stuff the character encounter are that way, and before I know I have 10 pages of plot and 100 of worldbuilding and lore.

"Don't forget to take those pictures, Snake."

"Why? I'm just going to blow it up anyway."

"Well... just... at least use the Nikita, it has a camera on it."

"Wah wah wah whatever nerd." Snake exited the vent and saw the soldiers before him. The general was too wrapped up in his speech to notice Snake crawl up behind the first camera man.

"At... cheese!" Whispered Snake as he snapped the soldier's neck and lowered him to the ground in a one, two smooth motion. It was then that Snake noticed the viewfinder, and how it framed the assembled marines so perfectly. "Pictures? I'll give you pictures," Snake thought to himself. He snapped the neck of the second camera man then positioned the camera to get a frontal shot of Metal Gear Ray. Snake slipped down and made his way over to the computer so he could upload the program.

"Alright, I've uploaded the program," said the digitized Otacon. "Snake, what are you doing?"

"Uploading my own program," Snake replied before walking toward the assembled marines.

"Snake? What are you doing? Snake!"

A moment passed. Then Otacon heard snake's voice again. But not through his computer it, it sounded like it was coming from inside the house. Otacon paused to wonder what could be making the noise. With a shock, Otacon jumped out of his chair and ran to the living room. There was Snake, in a live feed on CNN, standing on top of a pile of dead marines, their necks snapped in every possible direction. Snake looked into the cameras and smiled, before turning to the general cowering on the platform.

As soon as the two men were side by side, Snake fired. The round entered the temple of the man closest to Snake, exited, and then penetrated the second man's temple. Blood and gray matter from both soldiers spattered onto the tower wall.

Two birds with one shot.
"Snake left the room and headed back through the hall of dead soldiers to the elevator. The next step was to find Meryl. And when he found her, he didn't know if he wanted to spank her for disobeying him or kiss her if she was alive and unhurt.
Maybe he'd do both."

If you want to be published, then make unoriginal crap that panders to women since they're the only market still buying hardcovers at 'release'. Plan on how to make it into a movie and then put in a pointless romantic triangle. Also, make the crap stretch out over at least three books.

That's how to get published in the modern world.

Metal Gear Solid by Raymond Benson. One last sample of this timeless masterpiece.

Most of the books on your list OP were written to satisfy a particular audience and they did. I doubt anyone that reads popular fiction would enjoy non-consumerised, artistic prose. You seem to be discounting the cultural phenomenon of participating in a shared experience, which would be the incentive for most people to read these books.

>My sweet little whorish Nora I did as you told me, you dirty little girl, and pulled myself off twice when I read your letter. I am delighted to see that you do like being fucked arseways. Yes, now I can remember that night when I fucked you for so long backwards. It was the dirtiest fucking I ever gave you, darling. My prick was stuck in you for hours, fucking in and out under your upturned rump. I felt your fat sweaty buttocks under my belly and saw your flushed face and mad eyes. At every fuck I gave you your shameless tongue came bursting out through your lips and if a gave you a bigger stronger fuck than usual, fat dirty farts came spluttering out of your backside. You had an arse full of farts that night, darling, and I fucked them out of you, big fat fellows, long windy ones, quick little merry cracks and a lot of tiny little naughty farties ending in a long gush from your hole. It is wonderful to fuck a farting woman when every fuck drives one out of her. I think I would know Nora's fart anywhere. I think I could pick hers out in a roomful of farting women. It is a rather girlish noise not like the wet windy fart which I imagine fat wives have. It is sudden and dry and dirty like what a bold girl would let off in fun in a school dormitory at night. I hope Nora will let off no end of her farts in my face so that I may know their smell also.

Cleaned up a lot of awkward movie dialogue like that whole Anakin/Padme insane exchange.

Anakin Skywalker: You are so... beautiful.
Padmé: It's only because I'm so in love.
Anakin Skywalker: No, it's because I'm so in love with you.
Padmé: So love has blinded you?

I mean what the fuck is that?

Made Anakin's fall a lot more believable. The characterization for the characters is much better. Greivous and Dooku aren't neutered like the movie's fights have them be.

I read them if I like the story of the game. I don't like the warcraft and starcraft books because generally they are the story for the games and change things from the games, and that pisses me off. So basically when they use novels to retcon everything (blizzard)

I do enjoy some Warhammer books, like the witch hunter trilogy. I like ones that fit with the lore of the world, like if they describe something, I know what that is.

But most of the time they are meh, I call them shitter books, cause you read them while on the toilet, like halo books, gears of war, etc.

Here's the dirty little secret about most books that most English professors don't want you to know: It's all absolute bullshit.

People assign meaning to the texts and those interpretations are passed on for generations. Then 'study' just becomes the practice of either supporting those ideas or trying to make new interpretation. Post-modernism has made pretty much everything valid from tv shows to webcomics as 'works of literature'.

No joke: people were actually arguing Homestuck in thesis papers for one of my courses just before graduating college. I weep for the future of education.

The first four are King at his best, but the latter three are not. 'but it's King,' is idiotic, as King is a proven writer capable of exploring the large canvas and the small; he's prolific, thus open to more mistakes, which he has made profusely. He has written many other note-worthy books, though I'd say only a few of those are simultaneously his pop-culture successes.

It's a first draft and you'll probably think it's garbage, but ok.

Viktor stared through his unmarred sunglasses down at a device of his own making, a crude wooden box fixed to a pistol grip and festooned with a variety of dials and brass fittings. He'd preferred the device's old housing, but the people of this nation had an infuriating tendency to react poorly to a man holding a human skull, no matter how many scientific instruments it was ladened with, particularly back east. He'd made his way west in the hopes of escaping such superstition and ignorance, and had so far remained largely unmolested, but then again, he'd spent several weeks on an unwanted quest that started as soon as he arrived. He wound a key on the side of his instrument, taken from a desktop clock, and fiddled with a lever on the opposite side to reposition the iron rods that stuck out of its front end. They slowly converged, narrowing into a slender V shape which he swept across the simple wooden buildings of the boom town, muttering curses to himself in German all the while.

He gestured towards his dead mules, infusing a bit of will into the motion to correct their course and keep them moving down the street as it split into a simple crossroads. He pushed his shades back up his pointed nose, the better to cover his beady eyes with. He rubbed his hand across several days' worth of beard growth before letting it fall down to the device once more. He was badly in need of a shave and a shower. And a new wardrobe. And a new stagecoach. And a personal laboratory. And relief from hundreds of dollars of educational debt. And access to a fresh supply of well-preserved cadavers with paperwork filled out in triplicate indicating their prior owners had no objections to being used for research purposes. And some bratwurst and doppelbock, while he was wishing for things he'd never get out here.

The theme is the human condition in wartime or postware.

The genre is wartime or postwar.

Ok?
>>
>>255233058

Read books that are lauded as being classics of world literature. Don't fret over their daunting size or the supposed pile-up of symbolism and nuance once is reportedly demanded to note if they are to truly enjoy the book; go into them with the same curiosity you would venture into any other literary work. Read the opening lines. Feel out the characters and pace. Enjoy what is being given to you and read at your own pace. Anyone who argues otherwise is a faggot. Moby-Dick, Brothers Karamazov, War and Peace, Les Miserables, The Odyssey, and other grand tomes of world literature are fun books. They also happen to be intelligent. Pick them up and enjoy what you find therein; or don't, pick up something else, and enjoy that, too. Life is bigger than literature and anyone who claims a well-stocked bookshelf is necessary to enjoying it is an idiot ensconced too deeply within his own illusions to step outside of his own home. Reading is supplementary to a good life, not imperative.

Did you read the book? Ender had no idea he was wiping out an entire race. He thought the entire thing was just a game, and the only reason he even blew up the Buggers' home planet was because he wanted to be done with the simulation, and believed that just shooting at the planet would be cheating and he'd be able to go home.

Also, he's absolutely devastated when he finds out he just annihilated an entire race, and tries to make amends when he finds the surviving hive queen.

Genre fiction can still be a great read.

I can't get enough of this guy. I've read all he's written and I always want more.

>>
>>255234907
Not everything has to be described by an adjective. Just poor style in general, like you're trying way too hard to make it read like a novel or something.
>>
>>255235040
Feast reads much better when combined with Dance. Someone made a combined ebook of them.
>>
>>255235050
I dunno, only thing that's shit about A Game of Thrones are the Dany and Bran chapters.
>>
>>255233497
So genre fiction is just stereotypical, paint by numbers stories? Why not just say that instead?
>>
>>255222747
I love the series, but GRRM is hit or miss with dialogue, spends more time describing food than settings or people, does a pretty good job at writing the history, and his characters are also hit or miss. Also it's probably the third most popular fantasy series after LotR and Harry Potter.
>>
>>255235162
Because that doesn't sound pretentious enough.

Apparently calling something cookie-cutter or generic isn't as cool.
>>
>>255235040

It's more of a case of "The author has no idea what to do with his story" so it's shit now. This point just happened to coincide with a TV serialization of it. Probably because of the 5? year gap between releases.

I might, but as a rule I don't like to show other people my first drafts and this is why. I've looked back over my first chapter and I think it's garbage, so I just picked a pair of paragraphs at random and cleaned them up a bit for that anon.

It's nice to get some actual feedback other than "I like it" or "it's shit."
