I'm writing a female main character for an RPG I'm making for story reasons involving religious themes.
Out of curiosity, since /v/ is so knowledgeable about good characters in video games, what do you guys think a female MC in a game should have to be likable?
The general question is:
what does a CHARACTER need to be likable? Whether it's male or female doesn't matter.
Generally: can I identify myself with the character? Does he/she act like I would in a similar situation? (required your RPG is a more linear story)
Personally I prefer a character who can take a joke and is able to laugh... I'm sick and tired of all these broody "the world hates me" types.

What about her parents or upbringing would influence her as the person she is now?
Does this person have any passions, hobbies, or distinguishing traits?
and once you have that together, you easily have the fundamentals for a good and memorable character. This is my thought process as a DM for pen and papers when I make NPCs, I get paid to DM, I'd like to think im decent enough at presenting a story.

Her gender doesn't have to be a part of her character, but if it is then handle it well and don't go overboard. Don't make her a bitch, don't make it about girl power, don't hit us over the head with anything - even if no one says it to you like an ungrateful ass, we WILL notice the subtle touches. She doesn't have to be sexy either; if the game is good then the internet will care enough about her to make good porn of the game anyway.
Let her have her badass heroic moments, have her be a bro to her party and NPCs, etc. Basically, what do we like in a main character?

I'll second what this anon says. Christianity is a familiar comfort zone to work with, and your game isn't bad because you take inspiration from it. But try to take at least a few minutes to research maybe one other religion for aesthetic purposes.

Story starts with a murder of one of four heroes that was part of a prophecy. I don't really wanna get much into it since we're barely starting here.
If you're developing an RPG, leave the character development to the player.
Pre-defined MCs belong in other genres but RPGs.
You're developing a fucking video game, you're not writing a book. If you want to force your ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL upon the player, do it using a side-character, a party member or whatever, but leave your hands off the main character.

She should be pragmatic when the situation demands victory
She should accept the duality of men and women
She should have a few feminine interests and they shouldn't be something she's ashamed of
She shouldn't be insulted when offered help or being escorted
She should be well receptive of any opportunity to talk to others and get closer to her friends.
She shouldn't have a special bloodline or something that makes her superior to the a regular human. If you must give her a special skill, make her discover it through effort and dedication.

OP here, why is it important for me to define whether it's a WRPG or a JRPG? You guys still have arguments over what Dark Souls is. It's still an RPG in the end, just with different core mechanics. I like both sides equally.

One of the aspects of a likable MC is that he should be capable but not too capable or incompetent. If faced with a wall he is supposed to overcome but due to plot reasons, cannot, he shouldn't just state "I can't get over this wall", triggering a flag that makes another character to cause him to pass the wall. He should try to get over the wall, deduce that he can't do it alone or without a certain item or person and set on from there.

In my opinion the most important part of writing an interesting female character is that they have an actual goal motivating them that doesn't revolve around romance.
That doesn't mean they can't ever like a guy or flirt or fall in love, just that they always remember their mission (whatever it may be) is more important.

Why would it be important to define whether you're developing a driving simulation or a flight simulator? Because different people are interested in different things and if you don't want to give people false expectations you should tell them what you're going to develop.

Combine Christianity and budhism. The overal structure is the same as Catholocism but heaven is different. Christians believe Heaven is a mystical place where a lifetime of work earns you an eternity of paradise. Budhists believe that wants and desires are shackles and casting them off is enlightenment and the unenlightened are reborn. Make it so heaven is actualy the worthy returning to god and being eaten by him. Inside god they experience such profound pleasure that all the experiences in their lifetime mean nothing to them and they lose their sense of self thus effectively being erased from existence. Hell is a hundred years of torture before getting mind wiped and being reborn to try again.
