Don't use applocale.

The only way to fix it is to go into Region and Language settings from the start menu, and change it so that non-unicode programs run in Japanese. Every Rance game works fine if you do that, and you won't even need Applocale to run them.

Most people started on Sengoku, which, despite showing up waaaaay late in the series, was the first one translated and works surprisingly well as an intro. You won't know who some of the non-JAPAN characters are when they're introduced or why they're important, but that's not too big a deal.

Otherwise, you could start all the way from Rance 1, but remember just how long ago it was made. Even with the updated graphics version, 1 and 2 are still very Ye Olde RPG. Although you could potentially skip 1 and go right to 02 (the remake version, which is translated. 01, the remake version of 1, is not translated, although the original version is)
