We know there won't be a boss mode where one person utilizes the gamepad because as Sakurai said here:

Now that the Gematsu leaks have been proven completely false and unreliable, it's time people knock off Shulk and the Chorus Kids from their rosters.

The most likely character from that leak list was not only NOT included, it completely neglected to mention Robin and Lucina. This only multiplies the error from before of omitting Rosalina and Charizard, both of whom are considered newcomers.

The hope just keeps getting bigger. I always thought that idea was silly anyway. Not only would it be like a slap in the face because you'd be barely playing as the character and they'd not be usable in any other modes, but you'd have people bitching about who gets to play as the "boss". Looking at the roster selections this go around, we have a lot of barely changed characters and conservative newcomers.

Maybe Zelda won't get one but I'd not be surprised if they happened to. Sales figures don't matter too much in the long run. Star Fox got 3 in Brawl for example. Metroid getting Ridley and DK getting K. Rool would add two heavily requested characters onto the roster without them being over represented. Sometimes the meme of him being too big is funny if used in a way that's somewhat fresh. That coming from someone who's wanted him in forever.

Back during Melee and even Brawl you'd see more people wanting him and thinking he deserved a spot. Now it's just people angry at each other and Sakurai not just showing us his stage boss antics. Other than the crazed fans which pop up for everything what happened between Melee / Brawl / Smash 4 to have such a split on his inclusion?
