Don't get me wrong, I understand completely why some people hate the ending. It's contrived as hell, it's emotional manipulation of a high level. and it flies in the face of the message of the story, that you have to face harsh reality when it stares you in the face.

But at the same time, I don't care. You spend the entire game watching two characters fall in love when you know plot-wise it isn't meant to be. You want the happy ending, even when it makes more sense to not have one. ToD2 is the only Tales game that just went "you know what? we're doing it anyway".

This is me. I cannot wrap my head around the fact that people can say Symphonia was better. I clocked over 400 hours on GC Symphonia, Abyss was better.

I was actually watching my little brother play the HD remake over the weekend and was wondering how I managed to play it so much, shit is whack.

But, just because Kyle was lucky things went well at the end didn't mean he didn't actually make those hard decisions he had to make. And this is a personal opinion, but really, the main point of a story is to be entertaining.

There's little point in something having all the story depth and poignancy of say, a show like Breaking Bad when you stop watching halfway through season 4 because you no longer care for the characters, their situation, or the outcome of the story.

If anything, as this is a series which has such a well established pattern, it would have been a bigger betrayal if it ended the way those people seem to think it should have.

Actually the ending works because it's a contrast with the post-Final Boss scene. If it was just a 'yeah this is kinda sad' scene, the ending would be a cop-out. But it's not, it's a max-level despair, ripping your heart out of your chest and dropkicking it into the garbage moment. We like to make the "why even live?" joke about never being with waifus and shit like that, but that is the actual emotional state Kyle is in during that scene. He isn't just so conflicted that he genuinely considers damning the world if it means keeping Reala alive, but the whole reason Fortuna tries to tempt him with bringing her back in exchange for Reala coming back is because she knows Kyle might actually do it. It nearly broke him as a person. Even if history is rewritten and he (initially) doesn't remember her, is that a life situation you'd want yourself or anyone else to go through?

No it isn't, and that's why the ending works. Because it's giving you happiness after bringing you to your lowest emotional point. It's wish fulfillment, but it's also the literary definition of the sublime.
