What the fuck happened to EA, man? This game was a goddamn masterpiece and now they can't pump out something a fraction of its quality if they were at fucking gunpoint.
I want this series back so bad.
I just loved that just like Red Alert parodied and made a pantomime of the Cold War, the Generals games did the same for the War on Terror. The GLA were so cartoonish you couldn't take them seriously.
Best idle theme coming through.
I loved those missions where as the GLA you had a urban area and had to gather crates full of UN money (???), it might've just been me but I used the angry mob unit and I found it hilarious that they would be able to like level cities with AK's and molotovs.
The GLA were like the Saturday Morning Al-Qaeda. It was amazing, dare I say subversive?
>Superweapon USA general
Say that to my EMP Patriots and see what happens.
Why can't games be like this anymore? If they'd release it this day SJWs would cry about how it stereotypes asian and arabic people.
Now it's either 2serious4me or lel le epik memes, no inbetween.
Superior game coming trough
>Superweapon USA general
Superweapon general is OP as fuck what are you talking about.
I've been playing C&C games since the very beginning and the 2D will forever be my favourites
>more units makes the strategy better
Red Alert 3 is a prime example why more isn't always better.
Yuri's Revenge is the pinnacle of C&C games.
It's still OP
>We have completed our goal!
>Forty thousand american dollars!
Holy shit I remember this line reading. The soft-spoken GLA guy was the best.
There's also a special place in my heart for the first GLA mission where you blow up the dam.
>more units makes the strategy better
More units = more strategies. Plus special abilities, like stealth, spying and so on.
>Yuri's Revenge is the pinnacle of C&C games
Come on, the Yuri's faction is broken.
one thing i love about the laser general is how OP the laser turrets are
those things have a range that goes far beyond every other defense in the game, seriously. they have two modes of attack; their main attack which is a powerful burst, and a secondary attack which is a smaller burst that can hit out as far as the fog of war has been exposed
i always used to mass tons of them at the central island place on twilight flame and watch as no aircraft or tank/infantry columns could break past them, they could hit pretty much everything
the only thing they couldn't hit were player-micromanaged rocket buggies, since they could skirt just outside of the boundaries of fire and make a quick retreat.
But RA2 already has enough units. There's so many combinations you can do with just the IFV, or spies or capturing enemy buildings with engineers.
I've played it for years and constantly discovered new stuff.
>Preparing for credit transfer
not posting best character
laser is even more fun if you mod all the units back in that had their weapons replaced with lasers: Rangers, Paladins, Col Burton, Comaches, Laser Sentry Drones, and even humvees get the TOW missile replaced with a laser
Also this . The day I discovered I could use crazy ivan to create suicide attack dogs was a day full of fun.
>What the fuck happened to EA, man?
It's the same story with everyone... have you ever played early Activison games?
Only the best get to the absolute top.
Once there, they sunk lower than their competition could ever hope to achieve, but still bathe in money.
You can put bombs in terror drones too. The timer on the bomb stops when the drone is on an enemy vehicle and only goes down when the drone is visible
It's just so weird, like was there a big market for that stuff? Like if video games were around in 1900 would we have an oversaturation of games where you kill Filipinos in a jungle?
Reporting in this thread
I forget if it was in vanilla Generals or Zero Hour but the AI would fucking cheat.
I'd launch a nuke at a bunch of idling tanks and they'd all just happen to move just out of the blast area
I guess as 9/11 and the War on Terror become older and less of an immediate political reality we can look back and see how fucking stupid everything was. And that's what I liked about Generals - it kinda said "the war on terror is fucking stupid, it might as well be a war fought by cartoon characters." That's how I took it anyway.
You stupid nigger.
It's "spill on aisle one."
SWG is stupidly powerful against most of the time but relies completely on a couple of really expensive units surviving in small maps (namely aurora alphas and those laser trucks to defend your turrets from missiles)
SWG is completely useless in large maps because you can't move out of your original base to secure resources. Sure you can make an inpenetrable fortress but you won't be able anything but tickle the enemy with your ion cannon and suicide an alpha now and then.
These faggots have a longer range than a base defence like the chinese Gatling cannon.
They also fire something like 3 rockets per second when they level up.
>your ion cannon
More like my 15 ion cannons
Thats funny considering GLA dominates on unrestricted superweapons
I FUCKED YOU'RE MUM
>piss poor armor
>I've got anti-toxin upgrade on troops
That's funny considering I'd have my super weapons up and ready before you
daily reminder that this game sucked fat fucking dick and was the start of westwoods downfall to death. pic related, westwoods last game
Just posting this here
Are you me?
That's the main reason I play strategy games, I love base building.
My army is usually for defending my utopia and that's it. Near the late-game, I start becoming offensive.
Nope. Scud launchers can be fired instantly when they're constructed (which I think actually makes them faster to fire than SWG's ion cannon) and SWG is hilariously fucked when they lose their paper armored power plants or airfields.
Hell yes, I love doing that. Especially with the spotting abilities of the Patriot Missiles.
Also, did anybody else love Technicals? Aside from having 3 different models for their junk repair ability, they also had three different base vehicles they could be, chosen at random. I loved how it made your GLA army look much more thrown together and less unified. Can't think of another RTS with randomly selected models like that.
>i like eating ea's watered down shit game
>even liking this fucking piece of shit.
the jump to 3d was a fucking joke, get out of here you fucking 00s kids
>tfw we will never have a new decent C&C game . ever.
why even live?
>Can't think of another RTS with randomly selected models like that.
AoE switches between male/female villies since AoE2.
SC2 also has random switch on what kind of DT you get.
... but no one takes it to such levels as Technicals did, which is a real shame.
Also, favourite unit is
scorpion tank. with all upgrades they handle anything except air and are super cheap
>tfw the intro cinematic of Red Alert 2 is forever burned in my memory
It was one of my favourite games growing up, and it made a big impression on me.
The Premier turns to Yuri, who picks up a weird phone. He calls the American silo base. That noise plays and the man who picks up the phone pulls his gun on the man begging him to open the silo doors. The missiles explode in their silo.
Is it done, Yuri?
>not mentioning quad cannon, which is just plain great against everything once upgraded.
Also while marauders do shrek shit upgraded I usually prefer scorpions since they are fast enough to boom and zoom, reload their missiles and go again.
>that part where the apoc tanks run down the Texas sign
>thrown right into the fray
>the fucking Statue of Liberty is trashed
that game didn't fuck about
Infantry general. I never main him, but those chinks are great against any aircraft.
Also losing my shit every time looking at gravity in this game. Just bombard a trooper with nuke mig or aurora alpha, it flies the fuck off, well beyond the camera height.
> tfw remembering my childhood playing these awesome motherfucking RTS games
> tfw you remember they're all dead now and no one likes them anymore
Command and Conquer games were my childhood, I love this series so fucking much.
For me, it's the Yuri's Revenge opening. My favourite opening for sure, that attack on Alkatraz. Motherfucking Gatling cannons.
>YOU CAN'T THREATEN US! WE'RE THE MOST POWERFUL NATION ON EARTH! WE DID WIN THE WAR, YOU KNOW!
>Did you, indeed? I think not.
Main reason while GLA was awesome is the atmosphere around them, it's like 1001 Nights + terrorism and AK-47.
>time for infantry general fun
MAKE IT STOP
Oh fuck yes, I'm pretty sure I still have a screenshot of an Overlord flying at my face and clipping trough the screen
I thought china was even worse
An elite military force armed to the teeth with Nukes fighting middle eastern rebels in vests and T-shirts
And lets not forget the level where the GLA infiltrate the US and recruit GLA sympathizers
If you don't build beautiful bases why even play RTS? ASSFAGGOTS was invented for rush fags.
You can use them with the editor.
I've given the soviets an airport with migs that land on it (harriers with MiG sprites).
I even made a submarine airship for shits and giggles.
Do these serve any fucking purpose?
I remember the install wizard. How many games make you remember the install wizard?
EA caught the merger and acquisition bug along with all of the other publishers back in the early 2000's. Before then, they had the sense to just work with good devs. Then they started buying them and couldn't help themselves from shitting the shops up.
>game banned in china
>Assume it's about USA liberating the world from arabs and chinese
>Chinese are good guys too
>in ZH they inherit the earth from incompetent USA
>the only bad thing is "propaganda towers"
Was nice to see them portrayed without being demonised.
Wasn't that a glitch that was activated as soon as the Laser turrets attacked anything? I remember feeding my teammate an endless supply of workers he could force-attack just so that his turrets would #rek anything in a 50 mile radius.
C&C has the deepest lore.
It's just technically inferior to modern games .
so many limitations , from unit production to pretty much everything else that prohibits me from enjoying it today.
The RTS genre I am happy to say had the best progression out of all other genres.
The units are fun as fuck to mess around with, especially Japan's Transformers. I adore the special ability mechanic. Naval combat is fun too, and I just love seeing amphibious units transform as they run into the blue.
However, things like the special abilities are very vexing for serious play. Always looking out for a magnetic sattelite is boring.
Unless of course you run into rocket buggies or someone with attack helicopters.
The story and cinematics were great. The forced naval stuff was pic related.
I remember when I was young I was like a goddamn autistic fanatic for Kane in Tiberian Sun. Whenever he came on screen I'd say "PEACE THROUGH POWER!"
Joe Kucan was the fucking man.
>uprising expansion pack that adds in new units
>soviets dont get flamethrower infantry
>japanese don't get their deployable mortar units
What the hell man.
Relied too much on silly gimmicks. It's a fun game, but didn't reach its fullest potential.
I didn't mind the goofy cartoony style they were going for at first, but you get tired of it fast.
EA was never a good publisher. In the 90's, they had to recall a football game since expecting players to download a 22mb patch over a 33k modem was outright unreasonable at the time. None of the publishers at the time were really good. It was just that EA managed to ride out most of the storms on yearly franchises.
>play command and conquer a lot with friends
>their faces when I discovered how to let grenadiers hurl grenades across the entire map
Most broken C&C unit ever? Dirt cheap and good against everything
Most broken unit in C&C was Juggernauts + Snipers in C&C3 in my opinion. They could fire across the whole fucking map because of some invis dickheads marking targets and it would hit for an absolutely obscene amount of damage.
Balance, silly. Can't have one unit that can do everything.
>tfw they kept the cartoony look for CnC4
>Scorpion Tanks are literal massive scorpions on wheels
At least I never thought CnC4 would be good.
>Allies get units so overpowered that they took out multiplayer
>spy infiltrates your battle lab
>enemy now building chrono ivans
Why the hell did you remove this feature in RA3 EA?
I remember my friend playing as the GLA and spammning shit loads of angry mobs with AKs.
I remember him rushing a gang of three Chinese nuke launchers with like 15 units of em. It was hilarious to see a shell land and dudes go flying in the air all over the place. One they got in range though those nukers were in a god damn feeding frenzy.
If you would were to make modern day generals, what factions would you include?
GLA is still going strong i think. Modernized china? Russians, EU, India? Iran maybe?
I remember when it was first announced all the gaming magazines were all OMG CAN WE DARE JOKE ABOUT TERRORISM and they were predicting some huge shitstorm, which they pre-emptively tried to defend against.
But then in the end, no one cared.
Holy fuck, this shit reads like a history book. Is the C&C story really this deep?
>load combat chinook with snipers.
>fly over enemy supply caches.
>all workers ded in seconds.
the noise of all 8 of those snipers wrecking shit still gives me a boner.
>The level where they blow up a dam
>the level where they destroy statues
>The level where they nuke a USA base being besieged by the GLA
>Flame tanks and other Napalm weaponry
>Depiction of a nuclear weapon devastating Hong Kong and landmarks such as the convention center being destroyed by the chinese military
God these guys made the last USA mission trivial. After getting rid of the buildings with the weather machine, just teleport behind the wall so the AI doesn't react, then chrono out all the tanks.
>only big mod that got released was mental omega
>project phantom and robot storm will never be released
>people only make mods for ra2 and generals
It feels like the community is dying.
Modern China with an alliance with Japan, SA (Narcos and Contras), Eurasian (Europe + Russia) Slightly technological russian powerhouse; think Russian Apocalypse tanks WITH LASERS,
>mfw snipers would completely wipe the floor with stinger sites and open air space for the chinooks
No one cared because it was fucking funny. The GLA are just some guys who tie fucking guns to the backs of their trucks. Just like most Al Qaeda members are just some guys, and the ISIS guys in Iraq right now are just some guys, and, looking back, most IRA members were just some guys. And it's funny. It's scary and horrible maybe, but it's funny.
A unit of about 10-15 of these (upgraded with countermeasures of course), and you can't be stopped.
>Heheh, try it, you'll like it!
I liked that you could disable the turret so easily like that, but they would be back. Whereas tank shells would damage it more, but keep the men firing inside.
>The ship would vanish
completely for about seven to ten minutes. When the ship reappeared, Naval research-
ers and scientists would discover the horrific results of the experiment.
>Several members of the crew were found decapitated and some seemed to have actually materialized as a part of the ship's hull, partly embedded into it's structure.
People make mods for RA2 and Generals only, because .ini coding for the games is way easier than whatever coding the newer games are using.
Also, people kinda lost interesting in C&C3/RA3 modding due to GameSpy going under.
Post favorite unit.
Crusader is a close second for me as well.
Look okay, it's a stretch to believe that the GLA can match the world powers with their pickups and shit, but what the fuck are the African Brotherhood going to use? AIDS bombs?
that's a nice chopper general, wouldn't it be a shame if something happened to it?
Imo, they should've taken less "Company of Heroes" approach to it, aka, remove the goddamn commander abilities and just kept it in superweapons and some minor abilities, as in the ones from C&C3.
>When Westwood was acquired by Electronic Arts in August 1998, most long-time Westwood employees quit and left Westwood Studios. As such Red Alert 2 was created by a different group of developers than the original Command & Conquer series. This was evident in the different path the game took with regards to storyline and writing, using juvenile humor and dialogue in stark contrast of the serious tone of previous Westwood games.
Everything turned out alright then.
I don't know , I guess africans in the future decide to stop killing each other with spears and turn into a super-power .
>mfw the microwave tanks could cook infantry that were exposed to it for too long
If you think RA3 was too comapny of heroes... CnC4 was too Dawn of War 2.
>Strict unit cap
MAKE IT STOP
Even the fucking MENU of this game was fantastic.
>aww yis, time for some generals
>start the game
>end up watching the menu for half an hour
Why don't developers make menus like these again?
Just listening to that random radio banter and watching the GLA and USA blow each other up (or rather, burgerland blowing up sandniggers) was great.
Are there any games that do this?
I know HoMM V does it (not on the same scale, and not as interesting though), but I can't remember any other game.
So, was the Medium Tank in RA1 supposed to be the Abrams tank, or was it something else, like the Tiger tank?
I want to say it was the Tiger tank because having a tank in operation for over 40 years with no replacement model is pretty dumb,
Chinooks are good for rushing and that's pretty much it
Only relevant units are humvees and ambulances.
It's like GLA but toxic stuff is replaced by drug buffs.
Red Alert is pretty dumb.
Like they called the basic infantry dude "chaingunners". Like fuck off, those are obviously rifles don't fuck with me. Chainguns are for expensive dudes, not the cheap dudes.
P2W model and poor gameplay mechanics that no one who tested the game enjoyed. They just shut it down because they weren't allowed to do anything else and didn't want to release a flop that everyone hated.
>tfw thinking about the canceled Renegade 2
>tfw thinking about the canceled Command & Conquer: Tiberian Incursion
>tfw thinking about the canceled Tiberium FPS
Why does EA love to shit on a C&C fan's hopes?
>mfw when in the zero hour DLC they actually get a shoes upgrade.
Because they know they can't attract people to an RTS game for the singleplayer alone , they need to have a great multiplayer component but it's pretty much suicide to compete against starcraft at this point . It's sad but it's the truth anon . I feel the same way.
God damn the C&C games have god tier music.
>somehow they shot down cryocopter
>it fold on limo and destroy it
Sexiest defense in any game ever.
>That goddamn noise
C&C just isn't fit for meta. They tried it with RA3, and then tried it even more with 4, but it just turns the game bland.
Personally, I think C&C works best as a
funspam fest. If you look at the comp scene of C&C, the meta is fucking ridiculous. In C&C3 you got players building turrets/barracks so they can sell them to spam infantry faster (with no loss of money) and in Generals the USA spam rocket humvees, GLA spams quad cannons and China has to try and survive that 'till they get an overlord on the field.
RA3 on the other hand has the blandest meta. Japs always spam mecha tengu, USA spams air and the Soviets just have to try and survive to spam hammer tanks.
Maybe I'm way wrong, but unlike Starcraft, C&C is way more fun to play than watch.
Not necessarily. People generally play RTS for the single player experience. At least one company tried to do a statistics of it and it turned out only 1 in 4 ever went online. And that includes people who logged even once.
CnC was always about the SP, and MP was for kicks.
Gentlemen, it's a nuclear device.
>run into Nod base
I DON'T GIVE A WOODEN NICKLE ABOUT YOUR LEGACY, YOU CALL THEM OFF
>These are my grape nuts!
wtf does that even mean?
How good is it? I don't have a good enough computer (only a beyond shitty laptop) at the moment to play it. I've watched some videos, but I don't know how it compares to the real thing since I never played it. I love the concept though.
>MFW TIME IS RUNNING OUT
>MFW T-T-T-T-TIME IS RUNNING OUT

You have 30 seconds to comply.
I love C&C threads
and I love all of you guys. Seriously, every C&C thread is awesome and I learn something new every time.
>Always lost my shit entering the code as a kid, thought shit would hit the fan if I wasn't fast enough.
>Nothing ever happened, but the feeling remained.
>those rigged 1v1 custom maps
>the opposing player is surrounded by nuclear explosions
>30 seconds later several scripted bombs will be dropped on him
Lets keep meta discussion in spoilers; seeing posts on the front page about having a good time just invites trouble.
>my parents' face when I installed for the first time
