Towerfall is god-tier if your friends have controllers. Easily one of my favorite multiplayer games ever.

I also just picked up Nuclear Throne and I think it's fantastic. Vlambeer's previous games Super Crate Box and Luftrausers were visceral, exciting action games that lacked the substance and balance they needed to keep me interested in the long term, but Nuclear Throne is holding together really well. I'm starting to have a little more faith in these guys.

I have no idea why /v/ hates this game so much. It was the first major indie release after Braid and has no major flaws.
>>
>>246398359
/v/ doesn't really hate it. It's the best, and arguably only good game Ed's ever released.

It's just not as good compared to other "good" indie games.
>>
I really didn't like Treasure Adventure Game's final boss and ending. I felt like it was unintentionally building up to something amazing and then didn't deliver on it. Don't give a description of all the cool powers the magical macguffins that you're collecting give the user if you aren't going to let the player ever use them.
>>
>>246398114
Anon, I want to like you, but you dislike Binding of Isaac. I both love La-Mulana and BoI. You must give it a chance, and git gud at the game before liking it.

I like BoI, but it's not God tier. This thread is about God tier indie games.

What other good games? Braid? Pretentious plot. Fez maybe but not even I would admit that considering how much of a douche Phil is. Bastion or Transistor? Not indie.

Nicalis is really not that bad, I think its bad reputation came out of false rumors of Pixel getting his work stolen and no profit.
>>
>>246397567

I completely recommend it, and that's as a fan of roguelikes and STGs who has been consistently burned on rogue-lites and indie arena shooters. It's structurally similar to Binding of Isaac but it's better in every respect, and the action actually plays a lot more like Hotline Miami.

There likely won't be a sale for a while, because it's early access. After the game is "complete", which is probably going to be a while from now, they'll probably make it a flat ten dollars. Then, months later, you might be able to get a sale.

The game as it is is very strong, but they're still adding things to the game on a weekly basis and actually livestreaming a lot of the development. Vlambeer's other games felt like they needed more polish, playtesting, and content, and this game already has more of all three. I'm saying this because we're all skeptics here, I want you to know this game is making the most of its Early Access label.

Also, I uninstalled BoI so I'm not entirely sure if the save file is still there. I'll reinstall and see, but I assure you. I have 106%.

Also, BoI WOTL is really fucking easy. I don't know why you want me to prove you this, but it's one of the easiest dungeon crawlers out there.

>>246398852
>Nicalis is really not that bad
They took Cave Story, gave it a shittier translation making every single character (fuck your "huzzah" scapegoat) a bland, boring robot.
They took Cave Story's community, stole fan mods, and then added them into the game as "new content." Nemesis challenge: Mod. Hell Temple Speedrun: Pointless when there's already a timer in the main game. Boss Rush: Mod. Etc.
Nigoro trusted La-mulana's original fucking PC devkit with Nicalis, and they threw it in the trash. Forcing Nigoro to port the Wii version.
They cancelled two localizations without either author's knowing until they find out later.
And finally, they fucking rehashed CS a thousand times over.

Nicalis is fucking terrible.
They've never made a single game, either. So having them develop BoI:R is a terrible idea.

Can you post some simple 2d games, which are fun to get lost in? Maybe something weird. I liked Knytt, for instance. I donwloaded the pirate bay bundle, but there were only a couple of wacky games, the rest was just shit. I know there should be lots of this stuff out there

>>246399660
Thing about BoI is that it's easier only because of the increased rate of flying items.

...how is reading out of a guide correlating to skill to beating a game? You're not formulating tactics, you're not developing and mastering skills, and you're using the 0.00001% of your brainpower necessary to read words off a page. While BoI is a lot more luck based than DS because of the droprates, the fact remains that many gamers have taken the RPG stat enhancement system and confused the advantage it gives them with the low skill it requires to play the game.

I'm fairly sure you'll find less players who beat Meat Boy all the way through than DS, even proportionally.
>>
>>246392320
I could do that...
>>
>>246399735
>which are fun to get lost in?
It's not really weird nor is it as expansive as Yume Nikki or anything. But La-mulana is a game all about getting lost trying to find out where to go next.
>>
An Untitled Story and other Matt Thorsons work
Clonk Rage
>>
>>246399917
Basically flying items are rare as fuck now. Wrath of the Lamb was shit on release, but with all the updates the game is perfect now.
You not only have a decreased rate of flying, but if you get amazing items like Polyphemus, the special stat raises and lowers the chance of other amazing items. So if you get flying you're guaranteed to get less OP offensive items anyway.

>>246400024
I'm saying that beating BoI is impossible if you don't have skills and are just using a guide.

i didn't get too into Binding of Isaac but it seemed alright and it felt good to beat your previous attempts and the game is a damn fine example of level generation as each room is premade but put into a random arrangement/ randomly selected

Rogue Legacy is a terrible game. It's an easy, fad pandering piece of shit with bland and simplistic gameplay. Simplistic gameplay isn't bad--but it's bad when your game isn't trying to be simplistic. It's got one of the shittiest random generation mechanics in all of vidya, and it's an overall boring, uninspired trash.

It even tries to sell itself as a "roguelite" when we all know that that's a fucking buzzword made for people who think they know what a roguelike is.

It's fanbase actually wants Nigoro to reboot 2D metroid because of it. In addition to thinking it's better than Super Metroid.

Take that for what you will--It's a 15-25 hours long game (Not including optional hell temple) with great atmosphere and great music. It also does a good job of making the player think "where the fuck am I supposed to go" because it doesn't have an actual sequence.

What about the novelty of the concept and execution of said concept? To me that's what indie games are all about. Where AAA games are bogged down in making the same games in the same genres because their audience expect them to do so, indie companies can make whatever they want.

Also, the value of game design is about as subjective as fun. Art assets and polish just seem to be very unsatisfying criteria to judge a game by.

>>
>>246412103

Gameplay matters a lot but there needs to be some kind of emotional investment otherwise players usually can't justify spending time getting better at the gamee.

There are a lot of games with high skill ceiling out there, more than anyone could feasably git gud at, so we tend to gravitate around the ones we have the highest amount of subjective reasons to like.

Cloudbuilt had me with it's atmosphere, it's artistic direction and visual design. And of course the gameplay. I just needed some form of emotional attachment to characters to finally crack, but the fact that the game will not provide that makes me prefer other games to it.

No, you calling something a flash games means that it looks like a flash game to you, it has nothing to with it's "soundtrack" or "sheer amount of art assets".

He asked "why care about a developer more than a product?" when the twitter conversation I posted has the company directly saying "getting the best person for the job" doesn't matter, diversity does. Why should I trust Vlambeer to create a quality game when they hire less than acceptable programmers/artists/whatever in the name of diversity?

I'd rather give my money to a company that operates under the mantra of "we will hire great programmers/artists/whatever no matter who they are."

To be fair, the later levels get harder and they've just released a new campaign that's allegedly brutal.

With that said, having fun in Monaco is about enforcing some standards upon your co-op play, when I play it with a friend we found several times that yes, it was definitely possible to just rush in and out of the scene sometimes, but we played with the rule "Don't get detected, ever", which inherently made it a lot more fun.

It's solid. The art style is a bit wonky at times but at others it actually helps the atmosphere, which is really great. Really good music too, by one of the guys who contributed to Hotline Miami.

The first 20 minutes are really fucking tense and then as you get used to the enemies it calms down a bit. There are a couple key moments like one involving a certain elevator that are really damn nerve-wracking though.

I'm surprised someone else on /v/ has played The Guild. I really liked it, but it was buggy as all fuck, and easily abusable. If I remember right, what I did was made all of my family the thief type (brigand? I forget what they call it) and then I would continually pillage another faction's improvement and got infinite money.

The only other family-based games I can think of, ones where your primary goal is to improve the health and prosperity of your dynasty, are Crusader Kings 2 and well... I guess The Sims. But EA has ruined The Sims ever since Will Wright left that team.

You are never forced to use a guide. When you're stuck on a puzzle, you're not "forced to use a guide," you're stuck on a fucking puzzle that you need to start using the thing you were fucking born with, and (hopefully) had 18+ years to develop.

I almost never fucking say this, but this is a legitimate case of "git gud." You are fucking bad at solving puzzles, and that is not the game's fault. The game gives you all the tools and hints you need and because you can't solve a puzzle with your retarded ass undeveloped brain doesn't mean it's bad.

The game even helps you develop the your fucking brain to get accustomed to later puzzles you consider "bullshit."

If you "guessed" or "tried everything" to get through the starter puzzles, then no shit you're going to be bad at later ones because you didn't properly solve the older ones.

There's a relatively large sum of people who didn't use a god damned guide. Why? Because all the puzzles were completely solvable with the given hints. I'm one of those people. If you sincerely couldn't figure out the "took a knee" puzzle then you're bad at reading tablets. You are fucking terrible at doing the thing you were supposed to be doing halfway through the game.

Game developers are RETARDED. Their brains dont function normally. Their logic isnt logical.
Having to guess how to solve a puzzle is luck and trial&error much more so than critical thinking.

If you dont want to waste hours repeating the same shit with a minor difference here and there waiting for the invisible door in the walls to open, then you are forced to use a guide.

Nah, I've seen tons of people complaining about that part of the game.
I'm not condoning using guides for the rest of the game, but Chamber of Birth and most parts of Gate of Illusion are bullshit, and most people use guides for those parts.

Whoever uses guides BEFORE is worse than hitler. I really enjoyed solving pre-GoI puzzles (I used a notebook and everything), but nobody fucking enjoys "solving" GoI and CoB puzzles, which is why you lose nothing by using a guide.

The skills from the rest of the game don't apply to those two areas, as puzzles made sense instead of "press key you never had to press to solve puzzle" or "find this unmarked hollow wall to solve puzzle".

>here's a relatively large sum of people who didn't use a god damned guide.
There's not a relatively large sum of people who didn't use a guide OR "tried everything" that got through the game.

TL;DR: Using a guide is wrong except for those two areas and the mantras, unless you enjoy suffering

What.

Also, GoI isn't as bad as people are thinking it is.

The only shitty area in La-mulana is the CoB, and that's only because you are right about "find this unmarked hollow wall to solve puzzle," even though the hollow walls are sorta marked.

GoI makes complete sense. It only doesn't to retard and casuals.

I think you might be fucking retarded. Yes, there are some bullshit puzzles in some games. No, that doesn't mean every game is like that. And it definetly doesn't apply to the puzzle genre. Generalizing a couple of shitty cases that everyone thinks they are shit anyways to absolutely everything else only makes you look like a retard who can't figure out anything and blames everything on the developer.

GoI doesn't make complete sense, dude. Yes, the clues make sense, but only once you've solved the puzzle or if you get an instant epiphany that I assure you isn't common.

And did you seriously solve the mantras puzzle instead of just using trial and error? Because then I'm impressed.

Provided we're speaking about most point+click games, yes, I would agree with this a LOT... I hope you don't mean vidya puzzles in general, though.
>>
>>246416978
I can enjoy the parts up to that point, so it's half a great game.
>>
>>246416889
>Using a guide is wrong except for those two areas.
I agree to an extent, CoB is 100% okay to use a guide but even then, the CoB is just "place item here" or "use subweapon here." It's not an area where you have to think very critically. I think the only reason you'd need to use a guide is to know you have to place items places.
GoI on the otherhand is okay too, but some of the puzzles are genuinely satisfying to solve because it really is about reading into things too deeply.

Overall, they earn their respective titles as the two worst areas in the game for being deadly and the vaguest.

In addition to that, using a guide on the "Mantras" is completely retarded, because it's the final puzzle of the game. It's the final boss of puzzles, essentially. It's long and boring via trial and error as a punishment.

>>246417282
There's a tablet that hints at "take a knee" somewhere in the GoI, though. "Have the courage to search on bended knee for a single fallen item." It tells you to search for a single fallen item [hinting at the pots] and to "bend a knee" meaning to press down (because what the fuck else would it mean.)
>>
>>246417362
More like 9/10th a great game if we're only saying GoI and CoB are shit.

Thinking the rest of the game is shit is absolute heresy, though.
>>
>>246417282
You had to press the down key to go down ladders.
>>
>>246412668
Sorry for lateness, there's no reward and it's meant to be unbeatable, but yes, you just have to exploit a hole in the AI for 30 minutes or so

>>246417452
Of course there's a hint, but realizing both that "single fallen item" means "item that falls every time if you break this pot" and that "search on bended knee" means pressing down and isn't just flavor text does not happen to everyone.
Consider that item drops are random and even if an item drops three times in a row people will just think nothing of it.

>>246417585
"in a puzzle" means in the context of a puzzle, but then I used the same sentence again with a different meaning so I understand your confusion
>>
>>246417524
GoI and CoB take half your playthrough if you're going guideless. And I used their logic, it seems like a great game overall to me.
>>
>>246417657
That's a good point. But when there's 6 pots and only one of them drops an item consistently, in a game where you have to pay attention to detail to everything. It's something you're supposed to kinda pick up on if you didn't bullshit your way through the first half the game.
>>
>>246416921
Maybe you'll like this >>246411884
>>
>>246417769

>>246417719
CoB is a very linear, one time type of level, though. I don't remember ever having to leave it more than twice to get through it. Plus, like I said before, it's all about placing items you've gathered over the journey on hollow walls or pedestals. It's a little confusing in it's layout but overall has you using every single key item to their advantage. It's sorta an "item test" level.

GoI is a different story though. You frequently revisit that place so I understand what you mean.

>>246417874
That doesn't mean that you shouldn't have when you read "single fallen item."

Also, it's a japanese translated to english riddle-based puzzle game. I'd imagine there are some translation errors, meaning the flaws come from translation. I think it'd be a better game if it got a better translating group or just best played in japanese if that's the case.

I've never had food poisoning. I have had sickness-induced diarrhea like... once or twice a year. I don't think that's frequent enough to justify trying to find mobile games to play while my ass is singing a romantic serenade to my toilet.
