Reading vol 1 is enough to know that it's not a manga where chapters can be safely skipped. But if I'm going to start getting the magazine, I can buy the last 2 paper issues. Getting ebooks is just a lot more convenient than frequently getting stuff shipped. First I need to think about how much else in Forward I'd care to read though.

Passing through a local comic store I saw the first volume of KinMoza in English and bought it. It's pretty damn funny, I thought the anime was good but the manga is great and still gay as fuck. It comes with a few color pages and the format is a bit larger than the one I often see printed. For the puns lost in translation there are translation notes at the end of the book. If it had furigana I would definitely buy it in Japanese.

I remembered Candy Boy as pretty mainstream actually. Like the first streamed anime in japan etc back in 2008/09 was a headline in itself.

Really depends on your definition of yuri figures. You can have two girls from a het harem show dressed in pajamas lying down on the base and it may or may not be yuri depending on whether you ship them. But yes, there are a bit more 2 girl figs. I find just buying single char figures of pairings you like more gratifying because the quality will likely be better as they are separate sculps and paint job and with some imagination you can still get some yuri out of them... Or you can just buy figmas or nendoroids of characters you ship and pose them in a yuri way. Some current nendoroids come with hand-holding parts.

And yes, once you start, it's hard to stop.

I was referred to this thread - I was just reading Gaysia by Benjamin Law and he interviewed Ayaka Ichinose and mentioned that she wrote a manga about her life. I can't really find any English information about it, so I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it and whether or not it is worth trying to track down.

Apparently it's only available in digital format. As you said, it looks like a manga autobiography narrated by her then-current self (black hair). All the real, candid stuff.

So I finally started buying a few of those doujinshi that I've never seen get scanned just so I could see what's in them. Thing is, I don't own a scanner myself. Haven't ever.
Say I decide to buy one. Is there a particular type of scanner I should be after? One that doesn't break the bank, if possible.

Any flatbed scanner will do. I own an old Canon myself (CanoScan 3000ex) and never had any problems so far except for a few parts with dust that got inside the scanner.
Just remember to scan with at least 300dpi, color/cover pages get more. I saw some for 30€ on google, I think I paid 60€ for mine but that was like 10 years ago.

They both look decent and already belong to the more expensive kind. If I had to choose I'd take the Canon, but then again I've only looked at the specifications. Duplex is not necessary for scanning manga/doujinshi, but if you have the function you can use it too.
More important than the scanner is the technique.

Why are yuri pre-orders selling out so much lately? Bright & Cheery Amnesia v1 is out of stock on Honto already so now I'm stuck paying $12 shipping to get it from Amazon or praying for a timely restock.

I ended up going with the HP because there was one for £10 from Amazon warehouse.
This is the first scan I did. I set the scanner to 300 ppi and weighed the thing down with a book.
The black smudge in the top-right text box is from a mark on the underside of the glass. I don't know how to go about cleaning it.
I could use some feedback on what I could improve on before I continue on.
Should I be using the settings: Restore Faded Color, Apply Adaptive Lighting, Sharpen, Remove Dust & Scratches (have this selected to hopefully minimize the mark).

Scan looks fine for me. As for the black smudge, I suppose there's not much you can do from the outside. You can either try cleaning the inside of the scanner with the help of some tutorials on the net or you'll have to clean it on every single page.
I noticed some other dusk while leveling, you might want to clean your scanner with a microfiber cloth again.

Here's the page leveled, I think it looks fine.
I'd use none of the settings unless you know what they do. So try experimenting if you're curious. I don't have these settings myself so I can't say.
What's more important is selecting Greyscale for B&W pages and Color for color pages of course, and the dpi. The scanned page can always be edited in Photoshop afterwards anyway.
Also, try not to cut off any edges so you don't lose anything from the page when you have to rotate it.

Anyone know how Honto allocates stock for pre-orders? I ordered a bunch of yuri and one went into 7-21 day backorder. Now I'm stuck wondering if Yuzumori-san 2 will actually be held for me or if this backorder will fuck me over because Yuzumori-san will definitely sell out long before the 21 day hold is over.

Is this usable? I tried to get the pages as flat as I could against the glass, but there was a little ridge where the bindings were bent that may have cut off a small amount. The front page has banding (?).

But I've had terrible luck getting them to actually send me anything on 7-21 day backorder. They usually end up cancelling that item. I would recommend removing that item from your order and getting it later. You can edit already placed orders.

Just got a bunch of doujinshi via tenso and the double shipping and handling (tna->tenso->me) plus import duty were 2/3 of the total cost (+200%). The last time I was in Japan, I bought enough doujinshi to almost pay for my flights in saved shipping/handling.

If you're ordering from amazon/honto then you can get that down to a much more reasonable +50% to +100%.

So if you know what you want e.g. from recent comitia/comiket then you should definitely give them a shopping list, but note that they'll have to run around in Tora no Ana / Melon Books / Comic Zin / Gamers / etc and browse poorly organized doujinshi shelves which can be an intimidating experience and pretty difficult if they don't know Japanese.

I want to get all 3 volumes of Hoshikawa and the two CANAAN manga from years ago. For the latter they'd have to check thrift bookstores. They go every year for business (comic store owners) so they'd know where to go I think.

Thing is, when I look at the CANAAN manga online on, for instance, Yahoo! Auction, it is very cheap. 3 for €10. I fear they might actually be more pricy when buying in thrift stores. I'm a bit stingy lol.

It's about a school for animals who have transformed into humanoid girls. No serious romance, but there's a lot of skinship (and wolf at least apparently regards rabbit as her mate).

First issue of Galette got a 3rd reprint. That's good news for all the people who want to buy the physical copy instead of ebook.

Thanks for the pictures. With actual effort put into the reprint I'm also curious if Kurogane rewrote the time inconsistencies left over from the rushed ending. If my memory is right the ending implied a stupid length of time passed and then an afterword or extra chapter or something retconned it slightly. I think it originally implied 5+ years of no contact and then the retcon changed it to 3 apart but with occasional contact. Notice anything like that?

Seeing this picture and knowing how much Yukiko likes to draw cute gay stuff for Futaribeya almost makes me want to dive right in and support this regardless too. Maybe if it looks like it is headed in the right direction. Futaribeya started off strong from the start and got stronger but the sample page I saw for this didn't have anything that immediately convinced me. Hopefully it will at least be another slow burn.

Author mainly does het so it is up to your risk tolerance if it is worth buying tanks from an author who has questionable /u/ precedent. The amount of yuri it will maintain to the end is unknown, could end up being great or for a timely comparison it could burst into flames like Nanashi no Asterism just did. I got a prepaid creditcard specifically for ordering at Honto and Amazon, may be worth considering. Can recommend Skrill if their creditcard is available where you live (a limited number of countries in Europe I believe), never had a problem with it in Japanese webstores.

If your local Kino has a webstore you should probably check it for stock availability first. Most manga usually would have the newest vol in stock, but it's not guaranteed for them to make it to the store unless it's Jap Kino. Or maybe you're just searching in the wrong corner, since in my local Kino stuff from YuriHime and series like YagaKimi and FutaGohan are in different corners (different publisher).

That's the amount of money I'm already paying monthly, so I don't understand why they are asking me to pay again. I thought that art looked familiar. It's the author who did Kindred Spirits side B which wasn't as good as Itou Hachi's take on it but I can't blame her with that unreasonably high standard. I'll definitely keep an eye on this.

Can anyone tell me what the English version of Girlfriends is like?

I just bought the English version of Stray Little Devil, but the scanlation quality is total trash. There is so much detailed destroyed through over leveling.
Girlfriends doesn't have a similar problem, does it?
And what's the translation quality like compared to MakiMaki?

I've got a couple recently that were duds. Not het porn or anything, I can judge better than that, just not really yuri.

Maybe not a bad person but at least I find doujinshi (especially the non-porn stuff) to be such a personal thing that I could never bear to do that. Having actually gone to comitia on a few occasions to buy them from the artists in person has made that feeling a lot stronger—a doujinshi is not a "product" but instead a small labor of love distributed among fellow enthusiasts. I have a bunch of doujinshi which have pretty bad artwork but I still think them precious.

And expanding on that notion, if I come across a doujinshi that has a story I don't really like for whatever reason I'm still inclined to read it much more charitably than most commercial work, and put more effort into finding some positive meaning in it. A person worked really hard to create something, and to say something, and put it out to the world, which I know from personal experience is an absolutely terrifying thing to do. Just that alone gives me reason to respect the person even if the contents don't agree with my tastes.

So yeah I guess what I'm trying to say is unless your shelves are literally creaking under the weight of everything you have, maybe just put them away and try again in a year or two to see if you've maybe found some new horizons that let you appreciate the work in a new way.

Well, I'm still planning to get rid of one of them, because I really don't think any number of years will give me appreciation for this story that ought to be yuri, but in which the author has the girls stay distant and ultimately ends it with the implication that one of the starts prostituting herself to help the other's career. There's some kind of affliction in certain artists where they include as themes, or outright draw (often just as a what-if), creepy straight rape crap into their supposed yuri stories. At best it's a cheap and ineffective grasp at "realism," and at worst a carry-over dick obsession from your basic hentai trash.

The one at fault is me for buying it, not the artist for creating it, but I have no use for it.

I had kind of ignored 嘘酔い少女 and not bothered to check out its chapters on the web until I saw its 1st volume came out recently. It's an odd comedy manga where the protagonist tries to protect her childhood friend from getting "drunk" and throwing up as a result of people telling lies.
