And this is good news! Do the maths people. An idol girl group called "Lilygirl" is being aimed at Yuri fans. This means the Yuri fanbase in Japan is big enough to be worth marketing to. In other words, the fanbase is pretty much growing. And in turn, we'll be sharing in the glory, by likely getting more Yuri goods, like Anime, Manga and other Yuri stuff down the pipeline.

I'll hold onto that thought. Idol groups comes with all sorts of gimmick to get themselves known. You know, like Ladybaby. There's even an idol group that doesn't sing but read novels.

Yaoi is still going really strong because straight women loves it. And let's face it. It's mostly females who read love themed mangas.

Yuri's market is extremely limited. Straight women wouldn't be interested in 2 girls having an affair and not all men are interested in that too.

I hope Yuri will grow, but I'm not it wun be soon.

If you are always going to bring in an us vs them attitude, of course, you will have an extremely myopic view that Yuri market is "limited", and be eternally unsatisfied. Some common sense and logic needs to be used. When someone is talking about a certain market (Yuri, this case) growing, obviously, you talk about the increase in size from where it first started from and the amount of steady growth per it's pace. This isn't a competition against the Het or Yaoi fandoms. The important point is getting a bigger share of Yuri stuff. Not to wipe out the whole of Yaoi or Het fandoms, or to be compulsorily bigger then any of them. I don't know how you can even look at it from this point of view. Because this is really no common sense.

And Yuri has genuinely grown. Back then, it was a total wasteland. Since then things have gotten damm good for Yuri. And now, there is even an idol group doing Yuri pandering. Not bad. I can't speak for anyone else, but my taste is more open like the Japanese, so I don't look it from the narrower/socio-political Yuri view of the non-Japanese. Which might make a difference in Yuri goods perceived.

Read the article again. This isn't a general Idol Group which so happens to be doing things differently. It's explicitly stated that this is a purposely formed Yuri Idol group, where they hope to get Yuri fans attention (on top of normal fans, of course).

And gimmicks are used because there is a good effect. There is no gimmick where Idols line up in a row, and shit in a toilet bowl live, because who the hell wants to see that? Same with Yuri. Why wasn't the Yuri gimmick used years back then but only now? Common sense. Yuri is not good enough as a gimmick, until now, when it's bigger, more well-known, and naturally taken.

Isn't the idol industry basically inhospitable to any relationships? I'd think any yuri is a PR disaster waiting to happen.

I am actually loving Nogizaka46. Just got into them only last month. My fave pairing in there is Captain Sakurai and Wakatsuki. Other members are shipping them (e.g Ikoma and Sayuringo) Even MCs from their show Bananaman (Nogidoko) and Ijiri (Nogibingo) are teasing them.

One of their best moments was Nogidoko's 2014 valentines episode where members give other members their valentines chocolate. Wakatsuki gave her chocolate to Captain and even confessed to Captain that she really likes her but was rejected. Captain gave her chocolate to Nanase! That was such a good episode.
