To the people who might have been confused by the end or think there's plot inconsistencies, while I won't go into any theories specifically or deny any criticism you might have. I do think it's important to understand several parallels drawn by David Lynch and where he took inspiration from to truly get what he was going for (or was trying to go for). I'm not going to explain any theory in and of itself, but I will try to lay a general line of thinking out on the table.

There's a clear inspiration taken by Lynch from a certain genre of anime, in particular the likes of Angel Beats (2010) and Charlotte (2015). Both heavily criticized for doing the exact same thing Twin Peaks did but it really does all fit together well if you're of an high IQ enough to understand and appreciate this type of story. I know this might come of as unbelievable but there's many similarities here and if you want a less complex version that might help you understand the Season 3 Finale of Twin Peaks I think it's best to have seen the aforementioned shows.
They might be a little rough, and things might seem odd. But that's exactly why it compares so well to Twin Peaks. You can see, going from the first to the second show the time that has passed in real time reflects within the show itself. AB (?) C (?). It's a rollercoaster ride much like Twin Peaks was (is? season 4?) and will likely help you answer many of the problems you might have had with the ending of the third season of Twin Peaks. They're diamonds in the rough. They're the crude oil running through the veins of our inner sanctum. But at the end of the day you can better understand Lynch as a person, a creator, and, most importantly, a human. What his eyes saw and what he tried to reflect. Through the works so brilliantly parodied by him that go beyond a subconscious mind.

If you've got 10 hours of free time, and want to understand Twin Peaks on a much higher plane, consume these 2 shows. Thank me later.

Episode 18 is the perfect example of what's wrong with David Lynch's stuff. Ep. 18 took season 3 from great surreal sci-fi to Aquateen Hunger Force anything-goes nonsense. It retroactively makes the rest of the season worse because for all those loose ends, you can have 99% confidence that there is no real resolution, and as result, no real meaning. Making your own interpretation isn't fun when you essentially have to rewrite the whole show. At that point, it just feels like fixing the writer's mistakes.

The amount of pretentious BS many "critics" and fans have been spouting since the TR finale is truly astounding. I understand that any piece of art is open to interpretation, but any piece of art that encourages this amount of interpretation must have failed on some level. Because, in the end, all good art has a point, even if it's just on an aesthetic level, and that point has to be clear, even if it requires some digging to get to. To me, very little about TR has the faintest resemblance to a point. What was the point of all these hipster bands at the Roadhouse? What was the point of those cruel Audrey scenes? How about all those stale scenes with the Blue Rose task force sitting around, talking gibberish exposition? What was the point of the glass box? How is anybody supposed to get it, be enlightened by all this crap, and appreciate the artistry of it all? What can I say? Watching not only series 3, but the entire previous two series' comprehensively trashed by the finale has left me feeling - and I'm not exaggerating - utterly sickened. That blood-freezing scream at the end underlined that we have willingly subjected ourselves not to a dream, but an 18-hour waking nightmare. Kind of reminded me of the mother's scream at the end of the film Threads - a black howl of despair and hopelessness. Episode 17 was poor, but episode 18 really took the biscuit. One of my main criticisms of the show was that it was only tangentially connected to Twin Peaks. Episode 18 had no connection whatsoever to Twin Peaks. I think that it's safe to say that Lynch was taking the piss the entire time.

It's difficult put into words how utterly furious e17 made me. Bu retconning the story so that Laura Palmer never died, Lynch effectively ripped the heart out of the original show. How are we supposed to view the original, in which so much was invested over so much time, in light of the revelation that it, in effect, never happened in the first place? It turns what was a tragedy into a minor inconvenience and effectively wipes the whole narrative from existence. Remember how upset fans of The Simpsons got when they were told that Principal Skinner was an imposter all along? This is even worse. People have grown up with this story, and to callously destroy it in this manner is just cruel and mean-spirited.

What about the implication in e18 (surely one of the worst conclusions to any television drama ever) that every single thing we have ever known about Twin Peaks was nothing more than a figment of someone's imagination? Sheriff Truman, Hawk, Andy, Lucy, James, Donna, Laura, Bobby, Mike, Nadine, Ed, Norma, Hank, Leo, Jacques, Jean, Blackie, Jerry, Ben, Audrey, Cole, Albert, Pete, Catherine... haha, they never existed! everyone is thinking it's a bad ending but it really isn't. The fact that Laura is screaming means she remembers the horrors she experienced of her murder. She overcame Judy's roadblock of the house belonging to someone else. Now that she remembers, they can both go back to the lodge.

However, we see Coop attempt to open the curtains to no avail, somethign is up. I don't think this means all is lost though. Cooper can go to Cole for the "unoffcial version" in this Odessa reality, or hell maybe even go find hawk and andy at the sherrifs station. (of course Judy will change some stuff around again I bet.) Besides, Judy isn't more powerful thatn the fireman.

Either way, it ends so abruptly that both a good and bad ending can be extrapolated from it.
