I propose that when ST2 comes out, we do a book club twice a week (e.g. Wednesday and Sunday), slowly working through the whole volume front-to-back in short chunks, then discussing/shitposting about them on the day. Tackling the whole likely-200+-page monster will be off-putting for people, I think taking it nice and slow will be more fun.
Depending on how short each successive story is, we might get through a handful on a given day or 1 longer one. I'd be happy to sort out scheduling it.
>>
>>87168590
I just started this summer and just finished Hartnell's run I'm seriously considering starting again (I'll probably miss out the 1 episodes cos they're so recent in my mind) and doing the chronological order run using this site's guide: http://eyespider.org.uk/drwho/compleat.html. There must be someone who has actually done it out there, what strange mega autist are they and can I reach their level?

Somebody on /who/ was doing all the TV episodes, audios and books in chronological order. I last saw a post by them one year ago, they were on the New Adventures.
>>
>>87168680
I 100%%%%%%%%%%%% support this idea, but I'm a sucker for book clubs in general.

>>87168681
There is someone on Reddit who's slowly been doing it through the years, https://www.reddit.com/r/gallifrey/comments/23pxb5/first_doctor_novels_short_stories_audio_and/

I'm planning to start a Classic Who+loads of audios (mayyyyyybe all, we'll see) later in the year, probably October or November so I can try and sync up finishing Tenth Planet with Christmas. When I finish Survival I want to start all the wilderness books. You're suggesting the complete runthrough though right? Be a tricky undertaking, but it IS doable, that redditor documents his progress over the years well.

Trick is whether you will truly enjoy it or find it fulfilling. It's an absolute fuck tonne of content and let's be real, while some of the extended media content is incredible, a lot isn't. But it can be done.

God, that site really puts it into perspective about how fucking much stuff there is for the series in general. Had I but world enough and time (heh..), I'd probably attempt such a thing myself, but uni starts up again soon and I'll certainly be far too busy. But I might as well go through Eight's page and fill in the gaps up to the point I'm currently at in his stories - that's manageable, at least, so thank you for the link!

If you give the whole thing an attempt yourself... godspeed, anon.

>>87168775
He will fucking love that shirt, Edge. And, I'd say to go with the pictures, so you could get 'em framed and put up on the wall or something!

>world enough and time
That eyespider site though, and any other site like it (there are two other good timeline sites), they're useful and interesting but they're not great for story orders for a lot of things. Like if you listened to 8's audios in chronological order, you'd spoil yourself a lot of stuff and be a lot more confused than if you did it in release/series order.

>>87168976
insert sally sparrow quote about sadness being happiness

Also I think Doctor Who being forever unfinished actually is pretty fitting. Doctor Who can't end, and even if it did, it can't ever be completed, because it's lost so much of its beginning. Endless room for stories! There'll always be rumours about "I hear X found a crate full of X missing episode in X country".
>>
>>87168838
I'm estimating in the 250-300 range because
- Vol 1 was about 180 pages.
- Vol 2 has more stories (I'm owner of the google drive folder where Immigrant saves them all, which is how I know), as well as some entries longer than any in Vol 1, but I don't think it's enough that it would quadruple the page count.
>>
>>87168976
Think about how many countless works of beautiful creativity and expression have been lost to time. This won't make you any happier, but you can distribute the sadness more generally rather than just focus on a kids' TV show.
>>
>>87168785
I'm really considering doing it, I think it could add a really nice amount of variation in just going through the TV show and make each Doctor really feel 'lived in' and not just a guy who is there for 3 years and then vanishes. The only issue is that I'd probably have to miss out on what's not online as I'm a poorfag, which is made even worse by the fact that VK won't accept my fucking phone number reee , and would I pick out specific bits of books like the linked guide suggests? Any run which starts with lungbarrow though is probably going to be fun

>>87169130
Oh yeah for sure, it's easier to see the amount of stories there than on how the TARDIS wiki does its list of appearances
>>
>>87169093
how long would it take though?
Years surely, and by then there'd be more stuff released.

I'm planning on doing a complete Classic Series run in the new year, and maybe a complete Series+audios a few years down the line.

I don't think I could ever add in the books though because I'm trying to get through the New Adventures by themselves and it's taking me ages. Maybe I'm just a slow reader.
>>
>>87168976
Fell grateful that we have high quality audio recordings and telesnap reconstructions exist for many.
I'm more pissed about those episodes without telesnaps. Thank you John Wiles.
>>
>>87169193
I'd be willing to take years if I really enjoyed it but honestly I don't know if I would. I'm gonna have a look at some of the books on the 1st list anyway so who knows but media which I can consume out and about like the audios are easier to complete but books and the TV show do throw a spanner in the works of the idea of getting this completed before I'm fucking 30
>>
If anyone has the video editing skills, there's something that'd be very interesting to see: a side-by-side split-screen comparison of a recovered episode and its Loose Cannon recon from before it was discovered (eg. The Enemy of the World part 1).

everyone forgets comics. Those are actually a lot shorter to complete, especially if you stick to the DWM stuff.
As I said the problem with the audios is that by the time you finish, there are more released. And you also be dealing with incomplete story arcs and stuff.

Personally I find separate complete Doctor runs might be more manageable.

Just quick little things, i'm still learning but i'm getting better.

Fun fact, there have been several attempts at DW RPGs, this one was cowritten by then yet-to-be editor of the New Adventures Peter Darvill-Evans and you can download the rulebooks for free.

Seven days of Seventh Doctor offers to celebrate Sylvester (try saying that fast!). At Big Finish this week, we’re celebrating the run up to 30 years since Sylvester McCoy first played the Seventh Doctor on our TV screens (starting with Time and the Rani on 7th September 1987).

On a more /who/ related topic, Capaldi era marathon on casualwhostream. I floated the idea around about a day ago and some people said they were interested. Trouble is, I don't have all the episodes uploaded somewhere so I'd need some help organizing it. Also I'd need to know what time would work for everyone, due to the many different time zones we all hail from.

Has anyone read the short trip story "Totem"? It's in the second short trips anthology, More Short Trips and it's on the book mega if you want to give it a read. I'm not sure I understand what happened in it. Did the Doctor beat someone to death with a shovel or what?

Like, the premise is the Doctor staying in a farmhouse with this woman who's husband's gone missing, and every day the Doctor goes digging and then one night, the woman follows him and overhears him having a conversation with someone. Then when the Doctor goes back to the farmhouse, he gives the woman a ring that belonged to her husband and basically tells her that he's gone for good and not coming home cus someone smashed his skull in. Then he just fucking leaves? And there's absolutely no explanation?

I feel like I'm missing something about it, and the TARDIS Data Core has not a shred of information about it, aside from who it was written by and the fact that it featured the Eighth Doctor.
>>
What's /who/ with you?
I found a couple of Bernice Summerfield books for £2ea at a second hand shop.
Then went to Forbidden Planet and bought Supremacy of the Cyberman, it was signed and £2 off for whatever reason.
There was a Torchwood comic Rift War in the bargain bin so got that as well.
B&M on the way home had the Monsters set with Cybercontroller, "Attack of the" Cyberman and Sontaran.

I just finished a video project I've been doing recently - I wanted to create the opening titles / first 10 or so seconds of episode / ending titles for some Big Finish audio stories as if they were continuing on from the end of McCoy's series.

I've done Night Thoughts, Dust Breeding, The Fearmonger, The Highest Science and Robophobia so far and I've just done Unregenerate!. Tomorrow I'm gonna do Revenge of the Swarm, Red and maybe Nightshade.

>>87181879
Have you a link to this? I like that its left sort of ambiguous as to what happens if that's even how it happens.
>>
/who/, if you could choose a one-off character to be a companion, who would it be?

For me, Lynda-with-a-Y. Just imagine her and 9 in The Impossible Planet or Rise of the Cybermen, it'd be GOAT.
>>
>>87181428
I just read it, it's deliberately vague but the whole theme of it seems to be "moving on from your miserable past onto a brighter new self", and I think it's implied that whatever happened to the husband at least had something to do with a previous incarnation of the Doctor, probably 7, and he's gone to work for the widow and look for the body as a way of doing penance. The unseen figure he has the conversation with is probably his past self ("You can't mine me out").

>>87182080
I've been re-reading that whole digging scene a few times and yeah, this seems to be the most likely explanation of it all. The story starts out so comfy, I didn't expect it to end so deep and philosophical. The wiki page is staying as is, though.

It's not uncommon to feel uncomfortable, scared or otherwise just plain bad even once you've taken the first step to recovery. It's not an easy process, but it's far better than stagnating in life because the sadness is keeping you down. I really would recommend that you go to the appointment and see how it turns out. Also, they don't lock people up for paranoia or whatever, you'll be okay.

Ultimately, nobody here can make the decisions for you, because we aren't living your life and feeling what you feel, so I trust you to make the choices that you feel are best, and I hope that there's happiness in your future.

I don't recall the last time I felt like somebody genuinely loved me. An effect of my paranoia causes me to think that anyone who says they do must have some ulterior motive. Either they're lying, just trying to make me feel better or just like to mess with me for no reason because they're evil or something.

I don't see anything about myself to love, so I can't accept the concept that anyone else does either.

To keep this slightly /who/ related, I hope that we get a proper regeneration this Christmas, and not some cutaway with no regeneration effects to Jodie's face laying on the TARDIS floor.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about you or your life, so I fear that I'm perhaps at a bit of a loss to convince you more certainly that there are plenty who care for you. But nobody in this world is unloved, there will always be someone who cares for you.

Also, I suspect we will get a proper regeneration. The closest we've gotten to a "cutaway" (if you can call it that) so far in new!who is when 11 regenerated into 12, because it was near instantaneous. But even then, we got to see all the fancy effects a bit earlier.

Can some one rec me some fanfic where there are multiple Doctors? The only fanfiction I can find it typically Doctor/Rose, and I'm not a big fan of that :/
>>
>>87185832
Well, I'm writing this unfinished thing:

http://archiveofourown.org/works/11148630/chapters/24874683

It has Tentoo, Rose, Twelve, and Clara.
>>
Considering how huge and "epic" Eleven's regeneration was (the whole reset destroying the Dalek fleet, as well as the admittedly kind of cheesy speech after the reset), I reckon Moffat is definitely going to give Twelve a very subdued regeneration. Maybe just give him a couple of (wham) lines to himself before it actually happens since the main drama was in The Doctor Falls.

And if Capaldi's hint is anything to go by, it'll be lying down again.

Fuck I'm excited for Christmas.

I don't think so. I reckon One will leave as he sees Twelve off to his TARDIS, and One's regeneration will give Twelve the motivation to accept the change.

Seriously, I don't think I've ever been so hyped for an episode.

I had sort of put the special out of my mind for the time being, but you've got me hyped up for it now. All the descriptions of his regeneration scene by the cast/crew seem to indicate that it'll be really emotional, too. Not that those scenes are ever not, but still... Why do people enjoy writing stories at all?

Only the very deluded think thet their fanfic is going to become real. People write fanfic because they enjoy creating tales with those characters. People enjoy reading those stories with those characters. Plus, fanfic allows one to do stories without worrying about "budget" or "bad CGI".

Yes it is, and fan fiction is even less real than Doctor Who is. You might as well write your own fucking story instead of stealing Doctor Who's setting and characters and concepts, because then it wouldn't be fan fiction, it would be actual fiction with a bit of originality.

>>87188942
But if it's put out by the BBC then it isn't fan fiction is it? Unless it's otherwise stated, like with Curse of Fatal Death. Anyway, if Big Finish is fan fiction-y, then why not just listen to that instead of reading/writing some teenage girl's fake story?

>>87188966
Yes I do grasp that but I don't get consuming fiction OF fiction.

>I really like Doctor Who! Now I'm going to read a story that is even less real, is not endorsed by the actors/crew/creators of the source material and has no bearing on the TV show in the slightest. I know there's over 700 episodes of a show and countless books/audios/spinoffs that I could watch/read/listen to instead but no, I'll just read some random person's fake story that they wrote because they have a massive superiority complex and think they're better than people who do those things for a living

>>
>>87189244
>because they have a massive superiority complex and think they're better than people who do those things for a living

This isn't about being better. This is about appreciating the characters so much, that you decide to write more in that verse.

Also, you're making the Who production sound more monlithic than it is. The VNA crew, the Big Finish crew, and the current NuWho crew are all rather different. Much of the VNA crew were fans of Doctor Who before becoming official authors.

Why are you assuming it's about being 'better'? That's got nothing to do with it.

It's almost universally about creating something that you'd like to see, but doesn't already exist. Previously published Doctor Who works don't cover the absolute total extent of every story that could ever be told featuring the Doctor and the TARDIS (why would they? If they did, how would new ones ever get written?). When you have something as open to exploration as Doctor Who, it practically begs for the viewer to delve into it in their own imaginations and imagine more stories happening beyond the confines of the screen or page.

Fictional works, world and characters have an imaginative life in the audience's minds that extends beyond the strict limits of the original work. When people express the stories that the original work has ignited in their heads, that's an act of tribute and love to the original work
>>
TV, audios, books, they are all irrelevant. There is only one true canon.
>>
>>87189244
Because it's fun and it's /who/. It's not that hard to grasp. People have fun doing a thing, so they do the thing. You're overcomplicating it massively. No one is doing this to impress people or try and appear original or superior or whatever, they're doing it because it's fun.

inb4 you try and psychoanalyse fun
>>
>>87189284
No, but it is licensed by them. That's why you see that BBC logo in the upper corner above the words DOCTOR WHO.

>>87189414
Nine is my favorite Doctor. I wish Eccleston had stayed on for another series or two. I'm certain there are fan fiction stories where people wrote as if he hadn't regenerated into Tennant. I wish that had happened, but it didn't. In reality the fictional show I watched had Eccleston regenerate after one series, and all the fan fiction in the world does not change that. So you're wrong when you say that Doctor Who didn't happen "a bit more". Because it did. In our reality, Nine regenerated after one series. In fan fiction world, he didn't. But that reality isn't real, this one, where Eccleston left the fictional show after one series, IS real.

>>87189433
I never said they weren't different, I said they are all real, licensed people who make canon stories, while fan fiction people do not.

>>87189585
How is writing fan fiction expressing love for Doctor Who? If anyone it expresses disrespect at the fact that there all these legitimate stories that LEGITIMATE authors wrote and episodes, and spin offs and comics and audios that people put a ton of effort into producing for you lot, and you spit in their faces and claim that fan fiction written by someone at 3 AM on a shitty laptop is better because they pair your favorite character with another favorite, or because they write stories with lots of sex that you can masturbate to.

>>87189685
I think the show begs you to just watch the fucking show. There are over 700 episodes for you to watch, you seriously think that isn't enough? Try one of the spin-offs! That isn't enough? Read one of the many dozens of books? That still isn't enough and your imagination isn't sated? LISTEN TO SOME OF THE FUCKING AUDIOS!

If someone listens, reads and watches every single official Doctor Who story that's ever come out and still wants more then fine, read all the fucking fan fiction you want.

And in Who's case, there's countless main characters and worlds to play with. You could write solely about the First Doctor's era, and you would have a rich set of lovely characters to talk about. Each with their own character foibles and dynamics; with each own "deepest lore" canon, and it's own set of unique worlds and enemies.

And that has happenned with all 14 Doctors, plus Shalka.

>>87189849
>because they pair your favorite character with another favorite, or because they write stories with lots of sex that you can masturbate to.

Much fanfiction has no sex, or no shipping. A lot of fanfic can be a character study, or a simple adventure.

>>87189849
I've read a bunch of Ninth Doctor fanfic. Some of them continue the story, but most of them don't. It's easier to just set the story in one of the gaps in the Ninth Doctor's life that we didn't see.

The stories in Shit Trips weren't shippy, for the most part. Just read those, as an example of non- shipping fic.

Why does TARDIS Wiki's policy of having Time Lord names have "quotation marks" piss me off so much? Is it the fact that no one calls the Doctor and the Master "The Doctor" and "The Master"? Or the fact that it's trying to look pretentiously intelligent by doing that?

>At least one is mentioned in this thread though, something about a lesbo fic between 13 and Oswin or something.

I mentioned it. You have to realize that fic is one sex fic out of around 40 fics in Shit Trips 2. There are in total around 3 sex fics in all of Shit Trips 2.

>I would have to imagine that these stories wouldn't be read by people if they didn't think they were just as good or better than the official ones.

It's not always about "good or better." Sometimes it's about different.

It's very unlikely that there will be any actual long-term romance or sex in Who. Even the few eps with it have it being low-key. So many fanfics in several fandoms include se and romance--because that's different from what we'll get in the show. Fanfic is often either supplying what the fans would like more of in the show, or what they will never see in the show.

I am unlikely to see the 13th Doctor having sexual intimacy with any female companions, so I quietly noted that it was missing, and some anon is obliging me. I don't think this fic will be better--I expect a basic level of quality, but I'm not gonna say "this is BETTER THAN HEAVEN'S SENT SUCK IT CHIBBIES."

Also, letting the fact that someone will do something "better" in the official work should not stop any creative. That's the death of the artistic root, right there.

And there's actually no reason why fanfic can't be as good as the official source. You know hat some of the official writers started out writing fanfic, right?

>I'm well aware that I have issues, if I didn't then I'd be normal and basic things like this wouldn't bother me now would it?

Which isn't your fault, but don't be mad when people initially dismiss you. I understand your complaints, but the way you phrase them are a bit aggressive.

You wouldn't go to a group of people dancing at a party and question and berate the act of dancing to them, but in a class setting or forum for dancing questions specifically, you'd be taken more seriously.
What you're doing comes off as a nasty, inexplicably rude thing. >>87190696
And I realize where you've made a mistake. You're thinking that "why would someone read extra-official material when there's 50 years worth of material", but you're forgetting that Who comes in stages.

Yes, we had a whole season of Series 1, but we have only one or two episodes of Nine, Jack Harkness, and Rose. Which is why, if you check around 2006--2007, there was a flurry of fiction, often very good, about the 9, Rose, and Jack team. Often these fics were short, and focused on how Rose dealt with Jack's past, or how a conman handled interacting with the Doctor; or how the Doctor dealt with Jack's crush on Rose. Those issues were never gone into depth on the show, but fanficcers could fill in the gaps.

Later on, after Nine's regen, there were fics focusing on Rose adjusting to the Tenth's Doctor's new face. How did Ten contrast with Nine?

And, going further back, there's been fanfic about the Seventh Doctor dealing with being half-human. Or Eight meeting Tegan and Nyssa for an adventure against Cyber-Adric, a plot involving the Rani pretending to be Nyssa's black wife, and Tegan being 8's wife. (I'm serious.

Same, usually in a Star Wars context. When someone empowers themselves and realises "hey I don't need to care what X company or spokesperson says" it's a beautiful thing.

this. its like immigrant has enjoyed arguing and defending fanfic more than discussing the show lately

I'd be interested in seeing how many times /who/ has been mentioned on there, and in what contexts.

Having been there, I can say it depends. Antaganize people unnecesarily, or be too memey, and you can get banned. (On the other hand, I've never been banned once.)

The fanfiction group is pretty chill, if quiet now. The books and audios sections often have good discussion. It's the "Infinite Quest" board that can have crazy, somewhat aggressive discussions. Don't rise to the bait.

>>87192520
Unfortunately slash marks don't register in the search, so you just get results for every post with the word "who", which is basically all of it

Yeah okay. Theyre as stuffy and self important as the third doctor with the charm and attendance of the sixth.

Good news, Immigrant! I'll definitely have the 8/Martha (that is, them both in the same story, not them as a ship) ready by tonight. I'm sleepy as hell, but I started out with a few hundred words at best and I'm nearing 4,000 at the moment. Unintentionally longer than I expected I'd managed, but I don't think it'll drag on much more than that.
>>
>>87193061
I meant to say, the 8/Martha fic, not just, you know, "the 8/Martha." I worry as to what sort of grammar mistakes will be in this, now. Oh well.

I wanted to ask Matt about if he was going to do Big Finish in the future but he was so excitable about my art (I had drawn him some pictures to give him) that I totally forgot. "You're so talented! Look! Is this your sketchbook? Can I draw in it?" [Then he drew pic] "I'm also going to get my friend to draw in it, too." [He gave it to his friend at the desk next to him and he also drew something in it] "I like this, it sounds like me, I'll write '[my name] bring me my fez!' [He said this in character]"
He was a total sweetheart.

Pic is an Eleventh Doctor cosplayer who straight up made Rory's cake and was wheeled around by a Rory cosplayer.

Alright /who/. Let's settle this:

John Hurt's run(war doctor box 1-4)

vs.

Eccleston(series 1)

both have about the same amount of episodes. Who had a better run?
>>
>>87193484
>Catherine Tate
Was walking around in pink socks and did not give a FUCK, it was hilarious how chill she was. She had a bag of chips that were in the shape of fries and she came up to me asking what the hell they were supposed to be called.
'Fries that are chips I guess?' and she made a fussy noise and went '....crisps....'

She was wearing braces for some odd reason, didn't notice until I saw the selfies she took of us afterward. Also really sweet. She's not a hugging person because she doesn't want anybody to catch a cold or something (She might have had a little bit of a cold not sure) so she gave me a brofist and a high five. She was so enthusiastic that it knocked my glasses off, kek.

Eccleston
>>
>>87193715
Eccleston, not even close. Some of the stuff from the second Hurt set is good, mostly Neverwhen, but Eccles literally doesn't have any bad stories.
>>
>>87193724
This all sounds fucking amazing. I'm glad you had a good time!
>>
>>87193724
Aww, Catherine sounds lovely! There's actually a few sorts of crisps that are shaped like chips - or, fries, I suppose - over here, but I guess she's never tried them before. I hope your glasses survived the encounter!

>John Barrowman
He brings a party with him wherever he goes, I swear to god. He talked to everyone in the crowd before signing started. You're only supposed to get one selfie with him, but he'll take your phone and take like, several for you. With multiple ridiculous faces. He also hugged me so many damn times I lost count. He is very handsy, haha. Total sweetheart though.

Also he was wearing a 'I LOVE BJs' shirt for a little while and running around with it

He kissed a fan during his Q&A because they joked that 'you haven't kissed me yet!' and Barrowman brought him right up and called his bluff, kek

I did! I had...massive fucking anxiety but I'm glad I went. christ I'm broke now

>>87193994
She's hilarious, seems really chill to hang out with. MY GLASSES WERE ALREADY BROKEN, the hinge was glued on. ...The hinge came off again. She let out a very dramatic "Oh no!!!" I think she thought she broke them haha

>Billie Piper
Her plane was late and she HAULED ASS to get there for the last hour of signing. Because there wasn't time I couldn't get a picture with her, but she was incredibly nice. Told her I ordered her Big Finish set and I gave her some art I made for her, she was so touched and happy that I was a little embarrassed haha. I got to shake her hand and thank her.

Also get ready to ree;
"Can I ask you a question before I go?"
"Of course!"
"...It's a dumb shippy question"
"[She laughs] Go for it"
"Do you think Rose and the Doctor ever had a family in the parallel universe?"
"I think so!"
"Really?"
"Don't you?! I think so! It's what we all wanted!"

>tentoo and rose fugged and had babies, it's canon

>no bad episodes
>what is The Long Game
>what is world war 3/aliens of london

Fuckin hell m8, nostalgia blinders. I love eccleston as much as anyone else, but series 1 was a big "throw shit against the wall and see what sticks" kind of writing process.

And usually it worked. Its a testiment to chris that when it didnt work he found some way to make it work; but those 3 episodes were shite and it's no reflection on Eccleston or the staff that they were shite, they just didn't work. And that's okay, because they never tried that shite again after realizing it failed. Not everything had to be a winner for the show to continue at that point.
>>
>>87194551
Aliens of London / World War Three is a good script, and it worked well. The Long Game is mediocre, but it wasn't offensively terrible or something.
Hating Aliens of London is just wrong.
>>
>>87194364
Fuck you, it's not canon.

Shit trips 3 spoiler. Because I haven't written it yet, ya cunt. And nobody else can seem to be arsed to write these stories on /who/...i might do that by the way, but its going to be fuckin hard to do after the way my most recent handjob doctor story ended.

why the fuck am I getting defensive about a character I don't even own anyways? I usually have to be goaded into writing these ideas by someone. I guess one day I will end up writing that story though. For you guys. Maybe.
