this was such an emotional experience for me, that as soon as I realized Cooper was going to wake up from his coma I paused my TV and took a shower. I've been in a depressive episode recently, and I'm at the point where I'm struggling with the will to even shower. Watching the show, and realizing that we were about to meet our beloved (my beloved, hehe) Special Agent Dale Cooper again -- AFTER SO LONG, well, I didn't want to be disgusting when we met again. I know how silly it sounds, but I paused The Return right then and there, went and got cleaned up for our man, and then came back to my tv andproceededtobawlmyeyesout.

Roger Ebert was leader of the bunch at the time, and a lot of younger critics looked up to him and took his plebeian ass seriously.
And guess what? Ebert didn't like it because it upset him the way the director intended. He was fucking horrible about judging a movie based on his negative emotions, even if those emotions were part of the director's plan.
Ebert also had kind of a hard-on against Lynch ever since Blue Velvet triggered him for the same reason: the bad guy was mean to women.
>>
>>87068677

>>87068528
so how much of the roadhouse was in her dream? at first I thought all of it, since I didn't think any of it played directly into the plot but I guess it did. I knew sarah palmers scene wasn't at the roadhouse, and I guess i assumed james' thing also wasn't at the roadhouse, because it was the only other thing of importance that had happened in a bar. But that actually did happen in the roadhouse so i don't know how much of what happened there was a dream anymore

Yup, Ebert was an ultra pleb on Lynch until he gave the fucking Straight Story four stars, that should tell you something.

I will admit he's somewhat right about Blue Velvet in that I love the movie but it's definitely more exploitative of Isabella Rosselini, but giving it one star is overboard. FWWM did exactly what he wanted in regards to female protagonists and he still shit on it, so fuck him.

Was this the only time The Convenience Store was mentioned in the original series? I can't remember
>>
>>87068745
No, he never raped Audrey. The book gave a ton of details on Josie's backstory, along with the bank explosion aftermath. Most of it was lore-related mixtures of fact and fiction surrounding Project Blue Book as the archive was compiled by Garland Briggs. It talks about Crowley-esque sorcery and UFO sightings, and ultimately ends with the Blue Rose Task Force opening up after Dougie Milford witnesses a creature that looks a lot like the Experiment Model and mistakes it for an alien, before realizing that he's in a situation much more ancient and bizarre than simple extraterrestrials.

While I agree that Straight Story deserved highest marks, it does confirm that Ebert did judge movies based on how good they made him feel.
>>
>>87068942
it's also, as the title might give away, lynch's only real STRAIGHT story, as in it's easy as fuck to follow and couldn't possibly confuse anyone, which is likely why ebert liked it and nothing else; it didn't make him feel stupid
>>
>>87068906
Lynch basically did all of that much better in the fashion Ebert would've liked in FWWM with how sincerely Laura's story is told, and he still called FWWM "the worst movie in the history of Cannes".

>the dude literally had a grudge
i can buy this, he seemed to get hate hard-ons for anything that he couldn't wrap his head around
>>
>>87069044
Lynch also called it his most experimental film, and I don't think he was lying. The whole thing felt like Lynch was subtly applying his directorial techniques to a straightforward, simple story to see if they'd work. Sure enough they did in spades.
>>
>>87068387
Literally the only reason people hated it so much was it wasn't a continuation of the show.

I can get disliking the Chet scenes for just being an inversion of the show, or the Bowie scenes for being badly edited, but the rest of Laura's story is absolute kino and one of the best things he's done, and certainly his best female protagonist.

But again, people were so blinded by it not being a standard sequel that there was no option but for it to be shit on.
>>
>>87068984
PART 17: "Cole makes a statement. Cooper's doppelganger arrives at Twin Peaks. Sheriff Truman gets an unexpected call. Freddie fulfills his destiny. Laura runs away from James in the past, and Pete goes fishing."

PART 18: "Dougie returns to Janey-E. Cooper and Diane go into the motel, but she dissappears next morning. In Odessa, Cooper finds Carrie Page and takes her to Twin Peaks."

Yeah that was what I was trying to say. Everything else just seemed like conversations that didn't really have any direct effect on the plot. Then when Audry had that obvious dream type sequence I immediately assumed the glove punch scene was in some other bar. Not the roadhouse. But upon looking it up it actually was in the roadhouse.

So now we've got one that definitely didn't occur in reality, one that for sure did, and a bunch that who knows where they took place.

I've just realized Vedder posting was Lynch Lynching /tpg/ like nobody's been Lynched before.

The Vedder theory is true. Vedder's song is about a character that never gets their mind back. But it's not about Cooper. It's about Audrey.

Who could start a theory that was so accurate about Vedder's performance, the song he plays, and the meaning of the song? Only Lynch himself. But if it was Lynch, why direct the Veddertheory at Cooper rather than Audrey? To fuck with everyone, that's why.

Lynch was the original Vedderposter, and he conned every other Vedderposter into believing a theory that was completely true, but directed at the wrong character.

Absolutely 100% Lynched.

What irks me the most about Ebert's bullshit about Lynch is that he presumed to know how Lynch's mind worked and assumed Lynch hasn't been honest with anything he's made since Eraserhead. It's goddamned insulting.
If Lynch does have some kind of supernatural control over Karma, then it's no wonder Ebert's jaw fell off.

>You dove in feet-first; after your debut American film, “White Nights” (1985), you made “Blue Velvet.”
> I shot “Blue Velvet” right after “White Nights,” which wasn’t even out yet. I didn’t know it was going to be so popular of course; you never know when success strikes. But I really liked the work that David Lynch did—very experimental and unusual. Now [it is considered] one of the classic art films, and cult movies, in America.

>It certainly divided people.
>It was very controversial. I remember not reading the reviews at the time, but being told by several people that Roger Ebert felt very protective of me and felt I had been “used” [by Lynch]. It was a surprise! I am an adult—no one uses me. Rex Reed said my mom [Ingrid] would have walked out of her tomb and [made] a citizen’s arrest if she saw it! But a lot of people defended the film very strongly, including Pauline Kael, a very influential critic.

Makes me wish the Russian leaks never happened. Imagine being completely in the dark when Coop ended up in a coma. How smug the vedderfags would've been. Then he gets up and he's legitimately back for good. Then Out of Sand starts playing.

What we got was nice, but imagine the devastation of watching Vedderfags crumble in real time.

Vedder was born Edward Louis Severson III in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, on December 23, 1964, to Karen Lee Vedder and Edward Louis Severson, Jr.[5] His parents divorced in 1965, when Vedder was an infant. His mother soon remarried, to a man named Peter Mueller. Vedder was raised believing that Mueller was his biological father, and he went by the name Edward Mueller for a time.[6] Vedder's ancestry includes German and Danish.[5]

While living in Evanston, Vedder's family fostered seven younger children in a group home.[7] In the mid-1970s, the family, including Vedder's three younger half-brothers, moved to San Diego County, California. It was at this point that Vedder, who had received a guitar from his mother on his twelfth birthday, began turning to music (as well as surfing) as a source of comfort. He particularly found solace in The Who's 1973 album, Quadrophenia.[8] He said, "When I was around 15 or 16... I felt all alone... I was all alone—except for music."[9] His mother and Mueller divorced when Vedder was in his late teens. His mother and brothers moved back to the Chicago area, but Vedder remained with his stepfather in California so he would not have to change high schools.

After the divorce, Vedder learned the truth about his parentage: Mueller was really his stepfather. Vedder had met his biological father briefly as a child, but had believed that Severson was merely an old friend of his parents. By the time Vedder learned the truth, Severson had died of multiple sclerosis.

You know that David Lynch has made studio albums, right?
>>
>>87072381
>No, because music is consumerist media, and thus not a valid form of art. The merits of the average song could be summed up as "It's fun". And the artistic merits? None.

Appreciation of film and art in general is not consumerism. Watching Hollywood flicks for the sheer purpose of gross entertainment is, but I engage in no such activity. That's why I hate bandwagoners so much: they see /tpg/ in the general and want to hop on, and have little appreciation for Lynch, film, or art as a whole.

It's an absolute valid fact, not even an opinion. Lynch is the one who should be ashamed by letting no-talent hacks like pic related star in his shows simply because they're a pretty face, soft lips (he would know). Do you seriously think pic related is a talented musician? No, no talent whatsoever, and she's even a worst actor.

Also maybe he read some learning books in the 25 years we waited
>>
>>87072461
>No. Explain your reasoning.
Your entire reason that music is lowest art is that it can be integrated into motion picture. By that logic video games are even higher than motion picture, since you can integrate both music and motion picture. Your "but video games are consumerist" counter was both asinine and did nothing to prove this wrong.
You can't say music is the lowest form of art without saying that video games rank among the highest if integration is your reason (and don't backpedal; it was) music is low tier.

She says it was a few years after she last saw him, so early to mid 90s.
>why she was texting him?
She was created to aid Mr. C in whatever he's doing at the moment (still just trying to stay out of the Lodge or something more?), hence the texting of co-ordinates to him and the attempt to assassinate the FBI agents.

Bad Dale went into the real Diane's room, raped her right after she realized who she was and then took her above the convenience store, where he used her essence to create Diane's tulpa. Then he likely killed or abandoned the real Diane. The tulpa shared her memories, including memories of the rape, and eventually harbored resentment for working with Bad Dale. Despite this she was essentially his slave, though she managed to wrest control long enough to give Albert and Tammy the time they needed to put her down.

Why is there so much misogyny in this show? Every episode has women being objectified or brutalized by Lynch. It may have been acceptable in the '90s, but definitely not in today's age. If anything it makes it impossible to recommend the show due to how rampant the sexism is.

No, that statement was for any merits of music, in that if there are any, film integrates music and thus has the merits of music and more. I even write "furthermore".
>both asinine and did nothing to prove this wrong
Asinine? When the level of discourse found on /v/ is that below the average capeshit thread on /tv/? No, the consumerist aspect of medium such as video games is fully apparent and valid.
The only argument I grant you is I have not fully explained what makes music so low in comparison to other forms of art.
>>87072665
>You're literally consuming film and art in general with your senses.
Complete and utter nonsense. Consumerism implies cheap ideals of entertainment, and directly pertains to capitalism. "Consuming with your senses" does not directly pertain to consumerism, as any such "senses" exist even without the concept of capitalism. "Senses" are a mere biological instrument, and no consumption can exist without intent, and intent is where social ideals of consumerism become relevant.
