I think the end of season 6 tricked people into thinking it was good. People have been waiting for the Starks to reclaim Winterfell since Theon took it over in season 2/book 2, and even more so people have been waiting for Daenerys to land in Westeros, since season 1 and book 1, 20 fucking years ago. Additionally, it finally revealed the biggest secret in the entire series: who Jon's mother was. If you think back to season 6 most of it was shit until the last two episodes, and even then things happened simply because it would look cool (Jon charging an army all by himself for example).

The thing is, the story was never about purely subverting tropes. He had some main characters die to put the readers on edge, but there were always going to be some characters that survive. The problem with the show, however, is that they keep having the characters have things happen to them that should kill them. Just in this season: Bronn and his jumping out of the way of the dragon fire, Jaime falling to the bottom of the river bed and then just getting out on the other side fine and walking back to King's Landing, Jon getting tackled into ice-water, then emerging on the other side and not dying of hypothermia on the way back to the wall.

It's also no surprise that we're going to have the big struggle between the White Walkers and humans; this was hinted at in the first sequence of the show.
