Lynch spent a solid 5 minutes in the hospital scene having everyone state out loud how the coma Dougie/Cooper was in had something to do with "electricity". This was done in part to make you think about comas and their relation to the supernatural, to later make that parallel with Audrey's coma. If I didn't know better, I'd bet that only Cooper's knowledge on how to wake up will help Audrey wake up. Then they'll be confused about everything that's changed in the past 25 years together and will live happily ever after OTP CONFIRMED

Best guess is to make it feel like the series would be a normal show about drug dealing in a small town before everything takes a left turn. So, to set up some viewer expectations it could thwart, and also so people wouldn't realize too soon that "is Coop coming back" was the real narrative driving force this season. It did contribute to the overall experience somewhat though. There is often a lot of throwaway stuff in those types of things Lynch do.

I read the russian spoilers so I'm a bit thrown for a loop on how Richard will factor into the finale but I'm not convinced he is dead. They built his character up more than any of the new generation of TP kids and it didn't look like he died, he just got zapped and disappeared (perhaps Dopplecoop thought otherwise). After the implication that Good Coop will leave Dougie's family a benevolent, fully intelligent Tulpa, I'm pretty convinced the finale will involve Cooper having to grapple with the young spawn of his Doppleganger and solve that family crisis somehow. Audrey's apparent importance in these final few episodes would seem to confirm this also
