>>86812830
You're confusing abstract with surreal. Eraserhead is very surreal, but it has a definite meaning and story, and said meaning is very basic for Lynch. It's all about a fear of fatherhood, Lynch had just had his first kid at the time and he was afraid of being a dad. The only thing that's really abstract about the movie is the man on the moon scenes.

tl;dr people who didn't like fwwm, what was their rationale\criticism?
>>86813576
The tone of the return feels closer to FWWM than the original run, so probs not. Then again he might appreciate the homage to his work with hutch and Chantelle.
>>86813728
Why do people hate it so much? I was going to watch it for Kyle.
>>86813743
People hated it mostly just because it was a prequel, since everyone wanted to see the S2 cliffhanger resolved. Many also bitched about the lack of Cooper, like with the current season.
>>86813743
it was mainly the editing for me, a lot of it felt like multiple movies had been stitched onto the same reel. So much had been cut out too, the missing pieces is actually better imo
>>86813743
Not a sequel to s2, prequel to a character very few people cared about or wanted to learn more about, barely any Cooper, typical Lynch visuals that further confused them, and it had a depressing atmosphere.
But it not being a sequel and not having Cooper aside from a few scenes is definitely what killed it with initial audiences.
>>86813848
This also, truthfully I think the Bowie scene is one of its biggest flaws because of bad editing. If they would have kept the full version, I bet it would have redeemed the movie much sooner because then people wouldn't be so willing to write it off as pretentious arthouse shit.
>>86813727
>i was just pretending

>>86813887
>prequel to a character very few people cared about or wanted to learn more about
That's sad. I always thought Laura was a very tragic character and after recently watching FWWM even more so. Also Sheryl Lee's performance is amazing.
That being said I can see how at the time some people would dislike the film expecting something else. But anyone who watches it now should find it pretty good.

I like Cooper and cherry pie as much as anyone, but at the end of the day Twin Peaks is Laura Palmer's story. Thank god Lynch made FWWM a continuation of that rather than continuing off the shitshow of S2.
>>86815093
Cooper's been there for 25 years, why doesn't he have powers like Bowie?
Even then you can make a very good argument that turning into a retard wasn't a consequence of the time he spent in the lodge but rather a result of him going through the wrong plug or whatever.

>Twin Peaks is Laura Palmer's story
I get the reasoning behind this because FWWM and, like you said, she's what sets everything in motion, but by this point it's just as much Cooper's story as it is hers. He has just as much of an impact on the town and its people as she does, now more than ever post season 2.
I mean, if you go just by the show and not the movie or the Secret Diary as I'm sure many casual viewers did, Laura is more of a plot device than a character. That's probably a reason why FWWM wasn't so well-received. There was just no interest.
>>86813248
I know you're shitposting but I really like how Twin Peaks handles the distinction between intellectual and spiritual acuity. Tammy is intelligent, but blind to the spirit. Andy and One Punch Lad are spiritually sensitive but otherwise dumb. Cooper at his best is both.
>>86815322
Twin Peaks is BOB's story
Reminder that Lynch is an attractive genius who fucks a lot. His films weren't made for basement dwellers like the average 4channer.

>>86815390

re: eraserhead
>>86815322
I get what you mean but again, Laura is what ties everything together. When she's gone in S2, you don't care about any of the goofy shit going on because it's just random. Laura provides mystery and meaning to it all.
And again, as much as I love Cooper, he's not terribly interesting when they tried to flesh him out. He was best in S1 as a focused but off-kilter agent looking to solve the mystery. When they tried to flesh him out in S2 they ruined a lot of that IMO. That's honesty why I've been totally fine with all the Dougie stuff this season.
(And I'm not even going into how badly they fucked his characterization in the biography novel)
What was the point of that Teresa subplot in the beginning movie? It was interesting to see a town that was a polar opposite to Twin Peaks I suppose (old hag waitress as opposed to a hot milf, asshole police officers, poor and filthy residents rather than rich folks like Ben, and so on), but I just don't get the overall significance of it
>>86815420
It's funny, Lynch and Frost even try to throw him visual bones in reference to his work (Ray getting shot by Mr. C in the hideout felt like Reservoir Dogs) but Tarantino definitely doesn't deserve any shout-out since he's a fucking hack.

>>86815483
Pretty much what you said, to serve as an inversion to twin peaks, but also to tie Theresa's murder to BOB/ Laura's, and also to further the cyclical theme of girl murdered -> FBI agent investigates -> he gets lost along the way (Jeffries and Judy, Desmond and Theresa, Cooper and Laura
>>86815523
I think they may have taken that direction because Coop seems so perfect in S1, throwing that side-plot may have made him seem more human I guess?
>>86815329
No, I think you catch my meaning perfectly well. The real world follows certain kinds of logical patterns. Narrative fiction conforms to the standards of realism insofar as it follows these patterns (of linear progression, cause and effect, etc.). If you watch Lynch expecting the conventions of realism you're going to be confused. That's why I say rational intelligence will not be enough to help you understand Lynch.
>>86815461
I think Cooper could have been interesting if they weren't afraid to go darker with him. It's not like it would have compromised his pure hero angle or made him fake in some way, and if anything, making him more of a parallel to Laura would have made their unspoken connection in the Lodge that much more powerful, especially come the end of FWWM.
I get the feeling they tried to do that in the autobiography but in typical Frost fashion it fell completely flat.

(I was referring to Coop's bio btw, not Secret Diary just to make sure we're on the same page)
Anyway, the bio basically boils Coop doing to being a sexpot as the source of a lot of his toil, he has a bunch of flings with women we never hear about at all. It also does shit like imply BOB killed his mom. Overall it basically overexplains things that were much better left untold.

No wife, no girlfriend. Just me alone. But I have a package of peanut butter cookie mix. I'm going to make them as soon as I work up the energy.
>>86815562
It's boring. It doesn't know what tone it wants to be or what kind of story it wants to tell about Cooper, and basically dumps a lot of useless info that nobody cares about and does nothing to enrich or advance his overall place in the Twin Peaks universe.
The most it does is confirm that he's psychic which is something anyone with a brain could have figured out by the time it came out.
>>86815698
BOB also sang songs from the 30's, though
>>86815644
I agree, but my problem is rather than making him face darkness and evil as challenges in the present (which Lynch thankfully did with the Lodge ending), they just took the easy route and reveal that all of a sudden he has a dark past. It's lazy writing because it basically tells us how he reacts to it instead of showing it, it comes out of left field, and it's boring overall.
>>86815735
30's songs weren't banned in 40's though
>>86815735
and he was also spoken about in native american myths and stories from 200 years ago. The lodges don't obey the rules of time. Just because the black lodge didn't come into contact with our world until 1944 doesn't mean bob wasn't around in the 1930s, you dig?
>>86815786
>30's songs weren't banned in 40's
I like all the FWWM talk going on ITT, we don't get to discuss the movie deeply enough.
Do you guys think anyone else could have played Laura Palmer? I read in an interview with Lynch he once said that his biggest surprise of Twin Peaks was that Sheryl Lee was a great actress and the perfect Laura Palmer, and I think I agree. I dunno if I could really see anyone else as Laura.
>>86815644
you mean like if they made a character that was...like... a dark cooper?
no...well...
on second thought, i like it... could be season 4 material.

>Her story was the most interesting one in Twin Peaks, and it tied everyone together. That's why the show went to shit when it dropped her story in S2.
sorry but no. I liked fwwm, but the Laura plot is not very interesting- some of the scenes were amazing and you sympathize with her shitty sistuation, but she is not the best storyline not at all....
>>86815830
Sheryl Lee is amazing so it's hard to imagine how anyone else would have done it
>>86815888
i mean yes and no. it's not linear like that
Bob always existed in 1930.
Yes, he didn't and then he existed in 1944 and then was also in 1930, but at the end of the day, that means he always existed in 1930. He was always in those native american myths. etc etc. it's not that he "Went" to 1930.
Once he was here, he always had been.
>>86815830
Sheryl's the only Laura IMO. I can't imagine Lynch pulling that kind of performance out of any other actress. Maybe Laura Dern, but even then it feels weird to imagine.
That said, I always wonder about the recasting done in that movie, especially when it comes to Donna. Clearly Lynch had no problem with it then, why didn't he do it again for The Return with other characters like Harry? Instead of rewriting FWWM's opening segments to accommodate Kyle, why didn't he recast for Cooper?
>>86815750
This is so true, it's definitely a missed opportunity, and while the season 2 finale is absolutely amazing, I can't help but think that it would have been so much more effective had Cooper actually been struggling with that.
The movie shows this side of him, we see that he's had a dream that he's less chirpy about, it disturbed him and you get the feeling that he's very much woven into this other world. In Laura's dream he's very somber and not at all the way he was in the show.
I just wish that the "other world" the lodges played more of a role in season 2, we get some of that, he has that moment with the Giant at the roadhouse but overall he's not really significantly impacted by it.
>>86815942
He did have a problem with it. Lynch does not like recasting characters. If he did, he would've recast Jeffries (in more than a voice capacity), briggs, etc. He only does it when he absolutely has to. FWWM was an example of this.
LFB refused to do the movie because she sucks. Lynch would've left Donna out of the movie if possible, but it's not possible to tell the story of Laura's last week without her best friend. So he was forced to recast her.
>>86815957
the best way of watching twin peaks is straight up skipping all the episodes after leland death then watching the last episode of s2, fwwm and then season 3... there I said it.. I know this makes autistic fanboys rage but it's better to have that skip and leave everything to the imagination
>>86815830
I gotta say, the main thing that absolutely blew me away with Laura is the aesthetic. If anyone made this sort of show besides Lynch, they would gave picked some objectively hot 10/10 woman probably with big tits and ass because how else do you represent a female character who is supposed to be the most beloved woman in town who's also a prostitute?
But instead, Lynch picked a more plain (but still obviously cute) girl-next-door type. Not only that, but Laura always wears very conservative clothing besides when she's prostituting. He made such a more plain girl into this beautiful thing by more than just her looks. I'll never get over how perfectly Lynch executed that.
>>86815483
it's a prequel to twin peaks so we see both murders of the serial killer, plus it was used to expand the mythology a little.
ALso you could do the same opposite question, why skip to Laura (whose plot was already known) instead of focusing on the fbi plot?
>>86815929
In one time thread he didn't exist in 1930 though. It wasn't possible for him to do so until the breach in 1944. If you're saying that pre-breach can't possibly be measured, then how can you even be sure the breach made it possible? You have to account for the multiple time threads. there is nothing "linear" in doing so.
>out of sand is not on youtube

>>86816327

>>86816274
That's not fact, that's subjective depending on your own opinion on how time travel would work.
You could argue that there's one timeline where he was never in 1930. You could also argue that he was always in 1930 because he would always eventually be in 1930 which means he always was.
Neither is right or wrong
>>86816071
Also how well she was able to go from good Laura to bad Laura was perfect. Someone suggested Laura Dern but I couldn't see her pulling it off as well.
>>86815942
It would have been weird to not have Donna in FWWM because we know from the series that she was an important part of Laura's last days. Recasting her was a necessity, and probably a final fuck you to LFB who we know by now was a holy terror to work with.
That said, I have no good reason why Lynch didn't just recast Harry considering he's about on the same level as Donna if he's just going to have Frank bring him up 99% of the time anyway. It's just awkward and calls more attention to the fact that he isn't there.
Reminder that Out of Sand is actually about Harry Truman
>>86815942
I think it was more necessity, Donna was pretty essential to Laura's story as her best friend. Ben and Audrey had scenes in the script but since the actors didn't want to appear Lynch just cut them. I doubt he wanted to recast Donna, but he had to.
Also, the Kyle stuff wasn't rewritten. He was supposed to investigate Theresa's death with Sam, but Lynch just made a new character instead since Kyle didn't want to.
>>86816438
yeah and we should've recast the log lady so she's played by someone less sick who could do more than phone callsyou see the slippery slope you're advocating for?
>>86816531
That's still a rewrite, and a pretty major one at that when everything up until then, supplementary material in the Cooper biography included, indicated that Cooper was the one who investigated Theresa's death.
He also had more scenes too. Pic related.
>>86815830
Sheryl as Laura and Kyle as Cooper are perfect 10/10 casting.
>>86816677
Thank god they wrote that out though, it would've been garbage. The show always implied some emotional connection to Laura as Cooper got deeper into the investigation but sexualizing it is garbage
>>86816531
At first I thought he recast Truman, but then the guy explained that he was a relative.
>>86816677
Man, I am glad this never happened. But I do like that line "Why didn't you help me sooner"
Laura's dream with Annie takes place after her death, so I think that's a pretty haunting line.

>>86816797
Yeah the kiss and then that line is touching but "then they fucked lol" is terrible. I like the idea of Coop and Laura having an emotional connection outside of how sexualized she was by the town.
>>86816566
Despite how sick she was, she at least showed up.
Slippery slope fallacies are stupid.
>>86816677
>Laura is such a cute slut people travel through time just to fuck her
>>86816990
Definitely, I find that stuff beautiful but making it sexual is fucked up, can't believe that ever made it into the script. Gross.
I do love their connection, and I like how despite never having met, they still have this connection that transcends time and space through this other world.
I think maybe it is a bit of a missed opportunity not to have had Dougie been guided by her and not TMFAP. But I'm sure there's a reason for that, we saw her get ripped out of the waiting room after all.
I just catched up, was Bushnell one of the boxers that Sarah Palmer was watching on a loop?
>>86817113
sorry not TMFAP, MIKE. Having him be guided by Laura would have been more poignant.
>>86816944
Eraserhead is about more than fatherhood. There's kind of a spiritual aspect to it too. Think of the intro, the man in the planet pulling levers which is putting the story in motion. He's a sort of malicious god punishing Henry with a plague of sorts, a baby that's obviously not human and making his life a living hell.
Or think about the whole setting. It's a corrupted world of sorts, a perverted industrial hellscape. That stand in contrast with Lynch filming nature usually as something pure and beautiful. And this corruption is more or less something you see throughout the entire movie, the people, the landscapes, the buildings... nothing is pure or untainted. And, you know, I'm not saying it's about a post nuclear world or about industrialization specifically but it's about humanity corrupting what it touches and how it treats that corruption as normal.
>>86816944
I agree that it lacks gravitas, but I think that's because at its heart, Eraserhead is a black comedy, not a drama

>>86817113
Agreed, that's why I'm actually fine with Laura coming back and reuniting with Cooper (as long as it's well done, of course). That connection has been implied since the original series. I also hadn't thought about that, it's a shame Laura wasn't guiding Dougie. I understand she's obviously dead but I wish we had a bit more Laura in general (and Leland too while we're at it)
>>86816438
