I am twenty-two.
First time I came to 4chan...2006 I'd say. Very much not a regular user then though, but I was very into exploring the web since I was a kid.
I first came to /who/ in 2013. I've been coming on and off ever since.
Before coming here, I talked about the show the same place I still talk about it, in real life, to friends and family who watch as well.

Not seriously. The only options for it are either, you do the story of his parentage (which ruins the mystery completely and probably ends being cringey as hell in the process since it involves the Doctor being the special chosen one with magic human DNA), or you try to "explain it away" in some utterly pathetic fashion that can at most amount to a throwaway joke. What's the point?

Not sure about audios, because I haven't listened to them all yet, but I'm thirteen books into the EDAs and it's been mentioned in passing a few times. Different authors seem to have different opinions on it, with some outright saying that the human part of him is legit, others saying it's a mystery. I don't think any have outright denied it so far? At least not in a wholly conclusive way.

There's also some weird interpretations that say that it's only his eighth incarnation that has that "half-human" part, and all his other versions don't. Or, that would seem to be the implication at least.

Ultimately, it's just been a big *shrug* in general, and it's never been important enough to the plot in the EDAs (just yet, anyways - there's still a lot of them I've yet to read!) to be brought up or discussed at any length. I don't think it ever will be.

According to Unnatural History, the Doctor's past is in constant flux and he might or might not have been half human at one point but it doesn't really matter.
I think there are some actual explainations about his family in the very last EDA but I haven't read it yet.

I'm neither for or against it, weirdly. I think it's interesting, and would certainly explain a lot about how connected the Doctor feels to earth and humans in general, but then I'd feel like it sorta takes away this idea that... he cares so much and for so many, even though by all accounts, he shouldn't feel the need to. Giving him a connection to humanity, whilst explaining his desire to protect it, almost detracts from the significance of the fact that he tries so hard to. Or rather, it takes on a totally different sort of significance. I hope that makes sense.

Eight is, in many ways, a lot more human than some of the other Doctors - but also, in other ways, a lot more alien. I think he's a good representation of that proposed sort of half-and-half scenario, with both sides being pushed to the extreme at times, and sometimes even being in direct opposition. It's an interesting character dynamic. Eight isn't necessarily unique for being like that, since it's all part of the Doctor's charm in general, but I do think he's a perfect exemplar of it.

So, basically: I don't mind whether or not he legitimately is half-human. I almost feel like I'd prefer he isn't, for reasons stated above, but ultimately it would make sense to me either way, so I don't question it as much. I just take the stance the Doctor has on it - he may or may not be, or have been, or will be, and ultimately, it doesn't really matter either way.

(As an aside, it's kinda weird, actually - the only Doctor I feel that it's utterly plausible for a Doctor/companion romance to happen, is with Eight. I always explain it as him being that bit more human than the others - hence the relevance of mentioning it here - but I don't know. Maybe it's just that his personality suits it better than most incarnations: he's that bit more romantic and innocent and happy and loving, and that sort of thing would come more naturally to him. But that's a whole other conversation to be had.)

Uhm, clarification of what I said at the end there: I didn't mean it's totally implausible for Doctor/companion romances to happen with other incarnations, since Ten/Rose (and Nine/Rose and all that) happened, so clearly it must be possible. I just meant that I felt it comes more naturally to Eight than with others. So, not trying to discredit anything or anyone if they support certain relationships or whatever.

There's a place like that near me, too. Although it's not exclusively butterflies - it's more built to be a sort of jungle sort of thing with all sorts of critters in it, but butterflies are the most obviously noticeable cus they're free-flying and they get right up in your face.

Hah! I bet a few "butterflies" in the Doctor's butterfly room are moths, too, actually. Moths can be really pretty, though, and the fluffy ones are utterly adorable.

>I appreciate your indepth answers as always!
I'm always happy to ramble about Eight, as you well know. Always thankful for when I get the opportunity! Ultimately, everyone's free to have their own opinion on the half-human thing - I've never fully understood people who are determined to shoot the possibility down entirely. If someone wants to believe it's true, then more power to them. As much as it changes up the dynamic the Doctor has with humanity, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some people might actually prefer that he protects us so much because he has that deeper connection, and that's all good. The concept that the Doctor is (in some distant way) family to us, is a lovely idea.

>I think a few suit Time Lord romance well though (12/Missy, 4/Romana, 1/presumable wife)
I agree wholeheartedly, with all those pairings too. For most incarnations, no romance at all is preferable for me, but for certain ones - like those listed - I feel that, if any romance would work, it'd be with another Time Lord. So, to me, Eight is a bit of an outlier in that his most suitable romantic pairing would be with a human over anything else. I think one of the reasons he suits that sort of relationship is that he's a much more vulnerable incarnation than any other. Whilst all the Doctors require some TLC at some point throughout their time - particularly in nu!who - I notice that Eight is the one that welcomes it and needs it much more than most. The dynamic with others is a sort of "the Doctor looks after his companions and they occasionally give him a hug when he's sad or calm him down when he's angry" (really simplified, I know) - whereas with Eight, the duty of care thing is very mutual. Heck, there's even a little scene where Sam wanders into his room and finds him asleep in the bath tub with all his rubber ducks, and she has to wake him up and get him to bed. I can't imagine that scene being as tender as it was with any other Doctor in Eight's place, weirdly.

Goddamn, The Magician's Apprentice missed a trick by not including some audio of the 8/Davros confrontation from Terror Firma, it would have fit perfectly. They included clips from 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10, but 8's would have fit perfectly.

>>86780849
>The concept that the Doctor is (in some distant way) family to us, is a lovely idea.
I know some people go further and theorise the Time Lords are future humans and stuff like that, there's a lot of ways people try to reconcile those sorts of things.

> So, to me, Eight is a bit of an outlier in that his most suitable romantic pairing would be with a human over anything else. Totally. It's interesting that for all the 9~10/Rose romance, they barely ever actually touch, and when they do it's usually like you say, them comforting her.

11/River always played weirdly to me because he didn't seem into physical touch at all.

>>86781024

>>86780731
>Fancy to compare them to here? Similarities, differences, positives, negatives?

Sure!

>Similarities
Most of the opinions are generally the same. It tends to be Moffat-leaning and mostly pro-Jodie. I know quite a few of the members visit here and the wiki occasionally, but not really post.

>Differences
With this being 4chan and all, it's a little less... anarchy. Obviously there's nowhere near as much bait and opinions tend to be more articulated than shitposty, but again I think that's just a general difference between 4chan and the rest of the internet.

>Positives
Mostly it's the community I go there for, really. There's also rewatches every weekend (watching the first and last stories of each Doctor, with one episode of said Doctor in the middle selected by vote) in the run up to Christmas.

>Negatives
All discussion of Jodie is kept to a spoiler channel, which I personally don't mind, although obviously it'd probably annoy some people. There's also the occasional casual fan who'll come in (although they never really stay for long) and unironically post shit memes. There's also the occasional argument there too, the most recent of which involved the closure of the dedicated shitpost channel.

In all, it's likely a little more Reddit than 4chan in terms of humour, so if you really don't like that then it's not really the place for you.

>>
>>86781217
Yeah I know I know :( But it would have fit really, really well, and it was a rare chance it could work since the episode was already sampling audio (like the Name of the Doctor timestream).
>>
>>86781285
>But it would have fit really, really well
Would there have been any point to it, though? The only archive material that we actually needed to hear more than a couple of words from was the conversation from Genesis which directly pertained to the plot.
>>
>>86781330
The scene could have been done without any archive material at all, the point of the clips could have been done quickly in exposition with 12 and Davros, I'm just saying it would have fit nicely and been neat to see (hear).
>>
>>86781219
>How come?
Not sure, really. Presumably they don't have the same sort of shitposty humour.

>Do they have arguments similar to ones we have on /who/ sometimes?

>It's interesting that for all the 9~10/Rose romance, they barely ever actually touch, and when they do it's usually like you say, them comforting her.
Yeah, exactly. That's not a bad thing, of course! For some people, that sort of dynamic is interesting and it works and it's what they'd like from such a relationship. Personally, I don't think the Rose thing was that well written, and I think that even with a Doctor so perfectly suited to human romances as Eight, any companion relationship needs a specific sort of nuance to it, wherein it's not just some overstated romantic thing, but rather an unspoken sort of dedication and care and implicit trust - at least, that's just works well for me. I know others will feel differently. The Rose romance didn't fit that mould, so I never quite gelled with it, and it was never really believable for me from the Doctor's end of things. I could totally get why Rose would fall head-over-heels for the Doctor, but RTD never, ever sold me on the reverse. My personal interpretation for that almost desperate attachment the Doctor formed at the time was in part because of the guilt and isolation and self-hatred that manifested as a result of his actions during the Time War. Then suddenly he meets this girl, and she looks at him like he's the stars themselves, and she makes him forget sometimes, what he became and what the mistakes he made. She makes him think that sometimes, just sometimes, he can be the hero that she believes him to be. So he ends up attached to her because he becomes almost... intoxicated, by that sort of self-perception. Of course, he likes her as a person, but the mental state he was in following the Time War kind of amplified everything, made it much more than it would've been if he had been a bit more stable upon meeting her. Which is why their dynamic is somewhat unequal, because in many ways, he's larger than life to her. Again: this is just my interpretation. Always. Everyone's free to their own.

reee ran out of room

>11/River always played weirdly to me because he didn't seem into physical touch at all.
That pairing never worked for me, honestly. 12/River played more interestingly, in part because River at the time we saw her with him was... much more mature. A lot calmer, less in-your-face, and that personality suited 12 a lot. I really enjoyed her in The Husbands of River Song, and I'm sad we didn't get more of that River, because she played off of Capaldi's Doctor very well.

11/River was just... weird, because she was so physical and sexual, I guess, and 11 was always so childlike, it just rubbed me the wrong way. They weren't a good combination, I think, and we never really saw River played to her strengths as a result of it. She can be an excellent and interesting character when she's got a good dynamic with the Doctor going on.

Science Fiction is perhaps the genre I loathe above all others. The idea that you can take hard scientific fact, and then fictionalise it turning genuine achievement and discovery into mild fantasy fodder is very much distressing. I suggest you read about some real science, works of pioneers and geniuses who have helped us better understand the true reality of the world and not some infantile drivel that is as much a part of science as The Bible.

>What do you think of the actual 'half-human' meta10 Rose goes off to live with in the end?
To be honest with you, I can't remember RTD's era in a huge amount of detail (which is why I'd totally understand if anyone disagreed wholeheartedly with my interpretation of Rose's dynamic with the Doctor, I could always be misremembering stuff for all I know...) but, with regards to meta10, I think it was a good ending for Rose. She better know how fucking lucky she is, given the track record of companion endings. I think it was a fitting thing for the Doctor, too. In a way, it was - or should've been, since god knows he spent his time moping - symbolically distancing from the aspect of himself that had latched so strongly onto Rose. I would preferred if it had been played that way in the show. He'd always love her, just like he'd always love every companion he'd ever had, but I had hoped that sending her off with meta10 would've given him the closure he needed. Then again: like I said, going by my interpretation, it was a sort of unhealthy attachment in the first place, so it makes sense that it wasn't easy for him to break free of it. We didn't see enough of meta10 (I think?) for me to gauge how I feel about his relationship with Rose, but given that he's supposed to just be the Doctor but... basically human, then, really it just comes back to the fact that, symbolically, he would be the version of the Doctor that never got over Rose, never broke free of that unhealthy attachment formed in a low point of his life. Not that their relationship as a whole is unhealthy as a result of that, but the attachment itself would've done more damage than good if he had never forced himself to move on, because she would've inevitably died, and losing her like that would've been far worse for him than a bittersweet goodbye on a beach. Now, he managed to get over it, and he's in a much healthier state of mind, relatively speaking.

NO SPACE, continued in next post

(cont.) And the very fact that he isn't still like "oh rose.. :(" proves to me that the extent that the relationship reached was a byproduct of his state of mind upon meeting her. I just... maintain the idea that if he had met her under different circumstances - a.k.a. not just following the Time War - it would never have reached the level that it did. So, my meta10 opinion is just that: he should've been a symbolic separation of the Doctor from that attachment, but ultimately RTD - bless his cotton socks - wanted to go the generic romance route instead of writing 10/Rose with a lot more nuance. reeee. whatever

>I'm really interested what you'll think of 8/Charley too, when you eventually get there.

>I found Amy's infatuation with the Doctor more interesting because it was all one-sided thing about her character, not a will they/won't they strung out thing.
Yeah, I agree. It was representative of Amy struggling with her own feelings and her initial inability to rationalise her life with Rory and her life with the Doctor as one and the same. It was an interesting sort of inner conflict, and I enjoyed it. I think it was a little strung out at times, considering we had dealt with the brunt of the "ooh who will amy choose??" earlier on in the series, and she'd clearly chosen Rory, it was a sort of... pointless, "oh, haha, we're going to make the viewers think she ended up choosing the doctor after all, before revealing that, SIKE! she actually was still with rory, just like we said she would be a few episodes ago." Not a big deal, though. I just thought it was funny, I watched S6 not too long ago with a friend and it was fucking amusing watching him start to get all mad at first when he thought Amy had cheated on Rory to produce Melody, then be like "oh" when it turned out she hadn't. (It was, of course, his first time watching that series.)

I really loved the dynamic they finally settled into, though. That TARDIS team really, truly became a family, and they loved each other so very much. I almost wish Eleven's tenure had ended with the Ponds, because they were so representative of his era and so integral to his character, it left a glaringly obvious void when they were gone. But then again, the hallucinated Amy during Eleven's regeneration, with the knowledge that she's lost to him... fucking hell, I cry so hard at that every time without fail.

(Also, d'you know, as much as Eight is 100% my Doctor nowadays, it was Eleven for years, because he was my first. I'll always have a soft spot for that era, and his regeneration scene will always be one of the most emotional for me.)

>>86783557
>I really liked God Complex as an ending for the Ponds more than Angels Take Manhattan
Agreed. They're not the only companions who I feel should've left at an earlier time. The main one I think that about is Clara. I thought the end of S8 was round about a good time for her to go, then when she came back for S9, I thought FTR was a better alternative considering her personal storyline in the series up until that point... and then we got Hell Bent. On it's own, a fine ending, and I'm perfectly okay with it, but I felt that either of her two previous ones would've been stronger ends for her own personal narrative than the one she eventually got. (I know you like S9 in general, so I suspect this might be an opinion you disagree with, but... eh, it's a controversial one in general, so I expect as much. It's all good.)

>There was a magic about the wilderness years, for sure
Yup, and one that I don't think will ever be replicated unless we ever get a period of time like that again. It's almost like extra stories produced when the show is still on-air are neutered by the very restrictions applied to what we see on tv. In a sense that, if it wouldn't work for an audience the way new!who episodes do, it isn't attempted. The wilderness years kinda threw caution to the wind and explored things irrespective of how the readership (or audience, in terms of Big Finish) might digest it. Content from those years can be hit-and-miss as a result, but when it's a hit, it's usually a masterpiece in its own right.

The whole Ponds divorce subplot in S7 was weird too.

>Yup, and one that I don't think will ever be replicated unless we ever get a period of time like that again.
It's one reason I don't mind at all that the show presumably will get cancelled again one day, it's actually kind of liberating in a way.

>It's almost like extra stories produced when the show is still on-air are neutered by the very restrictions applied to what we see on tv.
There's an exact point in 8's audios where you can pinpoint this happening, as they rush to close a big arc out of nowhere and quickly shove his audios into being fanservicey more standalone adventures. It didn't stick but it's annoying to see them get all beholden to TV.
Then, later, I suspect they were priming 8 to be the one to end the Time War, but the 50th happened and they had to change plans again.
Working in the margins of the TV isn't inherently bad but yeah there was a neat freedom when none of the extended media had to do that.

True. There were some cute moments that arose from its resolution, but it really was out of the blue.

>I suspect they were priming 8 to be the one to end the Time War, but the 50th happened and they had to change plans again
REEEEEEEEEEEE
Don't fucking remind me of this. My god. I know they probably never will cus they're too busy producing their cat nurse audios, but I wish Big Finish would put out a sort of "what if" box-set wherein Eight essentially took the place of the War Doctor. Like he should've. Like he was destined to before Moffat fucking robbed McGann in broad daylight, broke into his house, and stole the only TV the man had ever owned. Then spat on his favourite persian rug for good measure.

>Working in the margins of the TV isn't inherently bad but yeah there was a neat freedom when none of the extended media had to do that.
Yeah, it can work and work well, and sometimes the new!who format that recent stuff ascribes to can be pretty good. When it comes to audios, shorter stories are alright and easier to listen to in one sitting, for example. But instead of it being a sort of "one or the other" situation, content with the freedom of the wilderness years alongside stuff that appeals more to new!who fans would be ideal. Nowadays it seems to lean more towards the latter more than it ever does the former, and it's a bit sad when you know how creative Doctor Who can really, truly get when give the freedom.

But remember to post any interesting quotes and stuff here, obviously, because I doubt most of us would undertake such a task and there might be hidden gems somewhere in there that we've missed.

I don't have many Doctor Who novels, just info books and stuff, but I usually arrange them by size. And obviously, chronological order if they're from a series.

Books being different sizes drives me up the fucking wall. Like the way I have my shelves set up, big books can only go at the top

I put them in alphabetical order of the author's last name, but then I have a shelf that's just Who and Horrible Science in chronological order

I asked this a while back and didn't get much of a response, so I'll ask again

I bought Diamond Dogs a while back and desu it's a pretty solid read - how does /who/ rate the S10 novels?

oh boy. be careful with that anon. depends on how sturdy your bookcase is, of course, but earlier this year one of my bookshelves straight-up collapsed because it was the shelf with all my bigger books on it

thankfully, it all worked out okay and after some rearranging, my bookcase looks really nice now. story had a happy ending after all
