There are no limits (except the story must be at least 1 word long, and preferably not in excess of 10,000, it's short fiction you fuck).

Yah, that's fair enough. If you take the concept of a Mary Sue at face value (an idealised, perfect character) then... Clara doesn't fit the bill, because she's far from perfect. But the flaws that would disqualify her only became apparent post-S7b, when she became a character rather than a storyline. When she was "The Impossible Girl," she was a bit of a Mary Sue. After that, she became potentially dislikeable for other reasons.

I loved Missy in S8, but she still wasn't a one-dimensional villainous archetype then either. She wasn't doing what she was doing for the sole reason of Being Evil™ - she was doing it in an effort to prove to the Doctor that they're both alike, therefore winning him over to her side so they could travel together like they've both always wanted. That's their relationship summed up, pretty much. They both desperately want to be with the other, but they also both want it on their own terms.

At the end of Death in Heaven, the Doctor concedes and tells Missy that she "won" - she proved that he was, at his core, just like her. Except, that's not all he is. At the end of The Doctor Falls (although it was a process of change throughout S10), Missy finally realised that at *her* core, she was just like *him*. But that's also not all she is, either.

Really the lesson both of them learned at those moments that neither are totally one thing or the other - the Doctor has darkness in him, just like the Master has light. They've been spending millennia trying to convince one another that they're each the epitome of good or bad, when in reality, they've always been a mix of both. The Master didn't turn "good," not truly, because she's never been wholly "bad" either. The character loves to play up the moustache-twirling evil archetype, but you'd be remiss to believe that's all they have ever been.

The only clear goal the Master has ever had is convincing the Doctor that they're alike. That finally happened... just not on the terms either of them expected.

Maybe because we've never seen the Master in a context that he could become so emotional before? Not much time for crying between all the evil plans. The only particularly emotional moment he was given that I remember was in The End of Time, when the Doctor gives his little "you could be beautiful," speech. The Master tears up and comes close to crying at that point.

I mean, there is probably something to be said that we only got the emotional version of the Master when she was a woman, but... I do think the context of the crying makes sense why it only happened now and never before.

S8 is where we got all the flirting and kissing between the Master and the Doctor, though. If you rewatch all the Missy scenes, it's pretty blatant - even before we got the spoken confirmation of the crush in S10, there was the Casablanca reference that basically confirmed the Doctor and the Master fell in love on Gallifrey. So, it wasn't a case of "3 years later," and there is probably something to be said about how the romantic aspect of the Doctor and Master's relationship only became blindingly apparent when one of them inhabited a female form... but, Moffat's not stupid, and he'd know that having all of that stuff would retroactively make every other incarnation be viewed in a different light, but people have already been interpreting the Doctor and the Master's relationship in that way before Missy ever came around.

I think the primary goal with the Master becoming a woman was to gauge the public's reaction to such a prolific Doctor Who character changing genders, before they went ahead and did it with the Doctor. An added... benefit, I guess, was that Moffat could then slide the romantic interpretation of Doctor/Master under the radar without certain demographics pitching a fit.

If Moffat views the Doctor and the Master's relationship in such a way, and made it clear through various lines that it wasn't like this exclusively in these specific regenerations, then he's clearly supportive of it even when they're both male. Or I should think so, anyway. Otherwise, what would be the explanation for the line about the Doctor having a crush on the Master back in the Academy, or the Casablanca reference in Death in Heaven, which both establish that sort of love as existing from their childhood onwards. And we can't just pass it off as "oh, Missy would clearly snog anything, so the initial kiss upon seeing the Doctor doesn't matter" - because then, what's the explanation for the Doctor kissing her in the graveyard?

Stubagful and perhaps Harry's Moving Castle are the only reviewers I can think of who seem to actually think about the show. Stubagful has the added bonus of being a classic who fan too.

FILMBuFF is a first time viewer and has done some reactions on his channel (only up to 1x07 so far) but at the end of the episode he gives some feedback and you genuinely feel like he's invested in the show and is taking it all in.
