Apologies I've just caught up on this episode, does everyone agree this show has completely gone to shit now? Politics and moral ambiguity used to be the foundations of the show. They've since been replaced with goodies and baddies, hurried conclusions to overarching plot points, characterisation that doesn't make sense, schlocky deaths and contrived set pieces. It's now an 'event' show - the kind of thing where you can drop in on any episode for a big fight or a surprise death.

in season 1 when Cat captures Tyrion it was an actual journey. she arrests him at that Inn and claims she's bringing him to Winterfell. they travel the road, get attacked by bandits/hill tribes, they make it to the Eyre, Tyrion goes free, he gets attacked by hill tribes again on his way to the Lannister camp.

Something that sticks out a lot to me in the later seasons of the show, is that a lot of the scenes seem to be of people talking in a room for an elongated minutes, usually with the camera on a flat angle covering all the characters, with the occasional half-body close-up shot whenever someone is currently talking.

And there's a clear demarcation between the dialogue scenes and the action scenes. Not quite like the star wars prequels, but similar.

Good post. Scenes in recent seasons usually involve a vast exterior of the location before a cut to shot/reverse shot of characters talking in a small boxy room. There's very little interaction with the environment now and no effort put into giving the audience an appreciation of scale and distance. It's much easier to film a character in a tavern or a side room rather than have them out and about interacting with the world in which they're supposed to live. The show's internal universe feels much, much smaller as the show has gone on, despite the budget increasing year on year.

Yeah, the show had those kinds of scenes well into season 4 as well.

I want to reiterate the point about how there is a clear division between action scenes and talking scenes now in the show. I think it's because they run out of source material and were left with checkpoints in the story they have to get to, boxes they have to tick. So they write scenes about people talking in a room, arguing about what will happen next, so they can get to the emmy-award action scene in episode 9.

Also these scenes will only be about the main characters. Jaime bickering with Cersei, Jon talking to Sansa, Dany with her war council, even Arya with HotPie this season (previously with Jacquen) and whatever minor supporting characters that used to give the world so much depth and realism are peppered throughout the narrative in a soulless manner, like some of the northern lords, or the lannister soldiers.

Meaningful moments that aren't just talks in an empty courtroom with the main characters or action scenes that D&D want to get to because it's what is required for the story to go forward. It used to be that the story seemed to move organically, now everyone and their mother knows what will happen, for what reason, and where the story will next head to, almost beat for beat.

The creeping sensation of the battle to come, the feeling of dread and immersion into the situation of the characters we are accompanying. That kind of ambience is completely gone, even in the battle scenes these last couple of seasons.

The Casterly rock invasion is actually the second last scene, and is narrated by Tyrion as its going down. He's essentially describing the battle as its happening. Theres an epic battle that focuses on Grey Worm as hes explaining. Grey worm throws a spear at a lannister soldier that sends him 15 feet into a wall. Its dope.
However as the battle finishes and Grey Worm and everyone is celebrating the victory grey worm is deff suspicious. Hes all like "There should be more of them" Then they get up at the top and look to the sea nad Eurons fleet is attacking Dany's and destroying the fuck out of it.
