I hated Girl in the Fireplace.
I had conflictions with Blink.

I have very little opinion of his tenure as Showrunner and the episodes he wrote during that time.

What kind of writer can't recognise blindingly obvious character development? Is the mere fact it wasn't delivered 99% through exposition enough to blind him? I really hope Gareth is just not seeing the forest for the trees because of his political views and views on Moffat, because if that's his truly unadorned valid belief, I'm remarkably disappointed in him.
I 100% agree with your vindicating remark Cats.

Come on Neo. Its really not that hard. His first episode ws about shakespeare, the writer most associated with a large secret gay conspiracy in history. Another one was about 2 blokes in an apartment together, one of which cannot spit out his feelings without a supernatural event taking place. Half of his eccleston book involves captain jack teaching a caveman how to live in an apartment with other people and blend in so no one finds out who he is. They're good stories but they're hella closeted gay.

Do you think changing his cpersonality and style of clothing and having him ride a tank playing a guitar is an entirely logical consequence of him saying "I am an idiot" in an episode?
I'm not saying that it doesn't work as character development, but if someone who used to be on the inside of the show's production says that there was a decision to make the Doctor more easily likable than initially planned after the reaction to series 8, I'm inclined to believe him.

>>
>>85287975
>Do you think changing his cpersonality and style of clothing and having him ride a tank playing a guitar is an entirely logical consequence of him saying "I am an idiot" in an episode?
Yes. The entirety of S8 was 12 struggling with how to define himself coming off after very theatrical hero-styled NewWho incarnations and what he assumed would be his death. He's a new regeneration cycle, back to being old again, and having the Time War ending reversed has made him adrift - none of what he's defined himself by for the last centuries holds anymore. He's not one of the last incarnations, he's not close to death, he's not the Last of the Time Lords, what is he? Is he still a """hero""" the NewWho Doctors often positioned themselves as? Missy helps him finally define himself in a much more early Classic Who style - he's a wanderer, a traveller, an idiot. He's not out to be the most badass warrior of all time, or the most angsty final member of his race, he's liberated from all that now, and can return to basics - to being an idiot.

Last Christmas eases that transition and so in S9 we get him embracing that carefree nature, naturally is escalates as Clara and 12 mirror each other and they move to thrill-seeking which doesn't end well, and so on and so on but we're just discussing the S8-S9 transition.

>I'm not saying that it doesn't work as character development, but if someone who used to be on the inside of the show's production says that there was a decision to make the Doctor more easily likable than initially planned after the reaction to series 8, I'm inclined to believe him.
Why though? A similar arc happened for 1, was planned for 6, and happened to 9 in a sense. Capaldi also was stringent on clear throughlines in the writing, he and Moff have spoken about this.

There's no RTD-level of exposition, there are no newscasters screaming the basics of what's happening, but that doesn't make it fake or backpedalling. If this was a novel, nobody would blink.

I agree with everything you're saying 100%. That said, I did really like how The Time of the Doctor turned out, and that depended on WarDoc (unless there was some asspull like 8 using a regeneration for some Time War bullshit before regenerating into 9).

I headcanon that the War Doc and Time War reversal was something Bad Wolf did as a favour to 9, blah blah blah, and that """""originally""""" 8 did indeed end the Time War for real, then regenerated into 9.

>>

Nice. I've been huge on bowie for a couple years now, but I find it hard to get into a lot of the post-1980 stuff with some notable exceptions. Station to Station is in my top 5 albums of all time so definitely check that out if you haven't. Also there's a box set coming out this September collecting his Berlin years and Scary Monsters, which would be a great gateway into those albums if you 'procured' it when it comes out.

I love the song Station to Station tonnes, but haven't properly listened to the rest of the album.

Bowie's great but, like Doctor Who, there's just so much content that it's easy to just rewatch/relisten to the same old favourites instead of going through it all.

I'll keep an eye out for that box set, sounds pretty perfect.

So Station to Station is your fav of his?

I'm sorry, I don't buy it. His development in S8 justifies this up to a point. The change was still quite radical. I don't believe that everything about it was planned from the start. His whole entrance in The Magician's Apprentice shouts "I am different, look at me. I play a guitar and wear a T-shirt now, I'm not so serious anymore".
The only comparable change between one season and the next is Tom Baker getting more sombre in season 18, and we know that was because the production team wanted to mark a clear change in direction from the previous season, not follow naturally from it.

>A similar arc happened for 1, was planned for 6 and happened to 9 in a sense.
It happened to Hartnell when writers were still figuring out how to write him. With Baker, the change was less marked and there was still a certain amount of back-pedalling in S23 compared to S22. Eccleston's change happened over the course of a series, and was again less marked.

>There's no RTD-level of exposition, there are no newscasters screaming the basics of what's happening,
Why can't certain moffags have a discussion without bringing up RTD? I'd dispute this, but then we'd get into the usual RTD vs Moffat fight and I won't fall into that trap.

>His whole entrance in The Magician's Apprentice shouts "I am different, look at me. I play a guitar and wear a T-shirt now, I'm not so serious anymore".
But that's my point. Death in Heaven and Last Christmas set up that change.

>With Baker, the change was less marked and there was still a certain amount of back-pedalling in S23 compared to S22.
The change as envisioned for Colin never properly happened on TV, I said it was planned for him.

>Why can't certain moffags have a discussion without bringing up RTD?
Because they are the only two modern showrunners and the most sensible distinction to make when discussing how different modern Doctors have been received. Both showrunners tell their stories very differently, so the ways those stories are received differently obviously makes more sense when you consider that context.

I think that's needless semantics to be honest, but if it's something we just have fundamentally different readings of, that's what it is.

>Then please explain to me what RTD's use of newscasters has to do with Capaldi's characterization because I really don't see it.
The frequent newscaster footage was endemic of RTD's tendency to spell out any and all story elements as loudly and obviously as possible. He wrote in a very expository style. There's nothing inherently wrong with this and it worked well for bringing the show back. Moffat didn't write that differently for the Matt era, but in the Capaldi era he started playing a more subtle game and "showing, not telling" with his storytelling. Down to the person in question whether it worked or not. There are no real signposts for what Clara essentially becoming the Doctor in Hell Bent signifies, but a viewer could take certain readings from it, for example. There's no seen of Clara telling Ashildr/Me what that signifies. It's left to the viewer, although all the pieces are there. Because of things like that, a lot of people complain about what they see as baseless storytelling, because it's not being spoonfed to them. It's a lot like the difference between YA and adult fiction, for example. I'm not even saying the latter is better, just that it's different.

No Let's Dance and Blackstar are patrician as fuck, he's just got so much great material. Basically everything he did from Hunky Dory to Let's Dance, that's like 11 albums of top tier music.

After that his material becomes kind of weak, was more interested in skiing and raising his kid than the music, though Buddha of Suburbia is good and I have a soft spot for Outside, but he returned to form with Heathen, sadly the follow up Reality wasn't as good and then he retired for 10 years after a health scare, but when he came back, Next Day and Blackstar definitely belong up there with his peak material.

>RTD's tendency to spell out any and all story elements as loudly and obviously as possible. Moffat in the Capaldi era started playing a more subtle game and "showing, not telling" with his storytelling.
But that's exactly the opposite of what we're arguing about. The change in the Doctor's character was spelled out as loudly and obviously as possible in The Magician's Apprentice, perhaps more than any other change in his personality before that point, regenerations aside. Hinting at a softening of the Doctor's perspective at the end of series 8 and then turning him into a rock star at the start of the next series is as far from subtlety as it gets in my book. Far more than any character development in the Eccleston-Tennant-Smith eras.

I don't see how it was a "hint" at the end of series 8 and I've made my case for why. And I was framing lack of subtlety in expository terms. Telling a story in an audiovisual medium through audio and visuals is subtle compared to how 99% of the dreck we get on television spews everything out through dialogue.

The vast majority of "prestige television" still pales in comparison to film and falls trap to the same old dialogue crap. The only 2017 show I can think of that properly transcends it is Twin Peaks. American Gods did a good job of it too. Moffat Who is nowhere near the extent to which they use the medium creatively, it does its own kind of unique thing in using the ~50 years of the show's mythology to pull its thematics through a meta discourse. It could be done in literature or music too, but it's interesting to see it done on television. I appreciate the ambition.

What is everyone's favorite episode from each NuWho season? I'm powering through it right now as I'm waiting for the Classic Who series. Two parters are allowed and if you can't decide between two post both.

Series 1
>Dalek
>This was the episode that cemented 9 as my favorite Doctor.
>It was also my first intro to the Daleks and I thought there were legitley terrifying.

Series 2
>The Impossible Planet - The Satan Pit
>This episode had an Event Horizon feel and I loved it.

Series 3
>Gridlock
>I initially hated this episode but it has grown on me and I enjoyed the design of all the cars, the creature, and the religious undertones.

Series 4
>Midnight
>Ten delivered a pulse pounding episode that takes place in a single location but nails the creepy factor. AN amazing bottle episode.

Series 5
>The Time of Angels /Flesh and Stone
>I know this is a cliched choice but this was my first episode with 11 and I was amazed that they could make statues scary.

Series 6
>The God Complex
>i don't even know where to begin. I might be wrong on this but I got a Stanley Kubrick from this episode.

Series 7
>Asylum of the Daleks
>Its not often that I consider the season opener one of the best of the season but this episode proved me wrong.

Series 8
>Listen
>I loved the design of all the sets they visit and having a monster that uses the audience's imagination against them.

Series 9
>Heaven Sent
>While it's technically part of a trilogy of episodes that round out the season, I consider this episode the best of the bunch and distinctly seprate from the preceding and proceeding episodes.

Series 10
>World Enough and Time/The Doctor falls
>This episode legitimately made Cybermen scary which I consider a feat on its own. It's a heartfelt episode that honestly feels like a season finale rather than just an action packed episode. Also the two Masters were fantastic.

Literally every episode you posted is a fucking pleb choice. Als you should know by now that no one here actually watches the show. They just come here to bitch about and tear each other down.

P.S. Get fucked
