Eh, I think a female doctor can work out if they write her well. I do have vague concerns that they'll do something like 'Now that it's a female doctor we need to do more stories exploring her vulnerability' or other crappy stories where she's 'female' first and the Doctor second. Gender should be a very low factor on who the doctor is after this many regenerations.

My only real issue is that I'd have preferred if they'd gone with an older actress. But then, I like an amount of 'Old grumpy bastard' and in my Doctors regardless of gender and feel that the doctor works best with an air of the upper class (The timelords basically were that on Galifray and television has rather a dearth of upper class heroes these days)

So yeah, it's more (imo) concerns about writing a female doctor badly than the basic idea of a female doctor.

Remember in the Mind of Evil when 3 said he was friends with Mao Zedong?

RTD and Moff both did a great job in the end, both having flaws and both having phenomenal things in their era.

I am really excited about Chibnall now. A whole new change to the show. A new showrunner, new producer, new music composer, new (female) Doctor, new companion. It's like the 2005 reboot, every single thing will be new. Like I said, Moff did a great job, but I'm genuinely excited about the future of Who. With so much new stuff happening with the upcoming era, I can't help but be glad. Doctor Who's been in a bit of a slump recently and I embrace and love the fact that we're basically getting another reboot. No more Moffat tropes like companions being the most important person in the universe, no more terribly written women characters. I'm not hating on Moff, but it's about time we got something different. Can't wait.

I get if people are pissed that she's a woman, it's a natural kneejerk reaction to a major change, I've been through the same thing with Idris Elba cast as Roland from the Dark Tower.
I also understand it's not sexism and really just a lack of interest. Just like me not being interested in this new Dark Tower because of the cast isn't racism; interest just isn't something you can fake, it's natural.

But at the same time the Doctor has been different so many times that I fail to find a specific set of things he needs to be (besides the compassionate and smart and hopeful etc). Bringing up the example again, Roland has to look, talk and act in only one way, while the Doctor has changed that every time.

I urge the detractors to at least give her a chance and watch her first one. Because I think just one little push might convince you, you're already used to the character changing.

Female villains are extremely rare in DW. It's always a white man pulling the strings, or genderless alien creatures.
