I'll be completely honest, I have to let this sink in for a bit. I was ready to be surprised, I didn't care whether it was Kris Marshall, Tom Rosenthal, that Welsh fellow whose name I can't remember, or someone no one had thought of. I would've given them all an equal chance as I did with Tennant, Smith and Capaldi.

But I didn't actually think for a second that they'd announce a female Doctor. Sure there were hints and teases but I always took them as little jabs at the whole "the Doctor could be a woman" thing.

I'll have to let it all sink in a little before I make any judgements. It just took me completely by surprise, but not in a way that made me feel excited.

Chibnall has proven he has a great rapport with her, getting 3 years of good performance from her on Broadchurch

Chibnall's actual writing is not "durrr look how pandering I am", if you actually watch the work he's in charge of he does not do that. If sometime tries to tell you Broadchurch s3 is feminist propoganda or whatever, they're off their rocker, because it has something like a grand total of 2 over-the-top sentences over 8 hours of television.

The show was inevitably always going to do this, it was obviously from the 70s, and doing it now, after Moff has laid 3 series of groundwork (Missy, the General, lots of hinting comments to it) makes for the cleanest way to do it.

The nature of the show is to always change and regenerate and push forward, experimenting is always healthy for the show regardless of whether it works or not. The nature of the show is some eras will work great for you and some won't. Best not get greedy, and just enjoy the ride.

We've been so indoctrinated by Moffat's writing that we think every female character is extremely shallow and shows off that she's better than any man by pulling out cool guns or telling them to shut up. Moffat was shite at writing good female characters.

Chibnall on the other hand is so much better at writing female characters, or characters in general. Under Moffat, 13 would be a River Song type dominatrix who would constantly remind everyone of the inferiority of men. Chibnall has more sense than that.

I think most of the hate or fear is coming from people forgetting that female characters CAN be good, but we've just had 7 years of Moffat's female characters and he's SHIT at them.

There was only one significant new feature in its world and the whole story was something that could realistically happen if we had access to that one bit of technology. Contrast that with "people rate each other now and it affects literally every part of society".
