This is fascinating. I had long known that D.W. Griffith was the quintessential white racist filmmaker, but I was unaware that he had an antithesis in writer-director Oscar Micheaux, the first and foremost black director of the early 20th century. Micheaux was unafraid to parade racial issues on film, and this particular production, albeit flawed by missing scenes and poor quality, is the first instance I've ever seen of a black separatist portrayed on the screen -- the Preacher Old Ned, who tells his flock that white folks will perish for their sins and black folks will be raised to heaven for devotion to God.
