It sets a tone, and provides a lot of exposition. The benefit of a two parter is that you have more time to do this.
>>
Maybe ratings have been low because they decided to take a whole fucking year off without making up for it with quarterly specials like they fucking should have
>>
>>84876132
It's still shit though. Bland direction, annoying characters, River at her most irritating, 10 also quite irritating, a boring as fuck plot

The best bits are Dr Moon and Donna's simulation life
>>
>>84876125
And yet Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead has a higher IMDb score and the second part isn't a total shitfest.
The only reason the AI is so high is all the god damn fanservice and the viewing figure is so high because it's the finale and all the Rose baiting.
>>
>>84876102
And? Pyramids of Mars is basically just running back and forth between two boring locations while being chased by some top-heavy mummy robots. Both are top-tier, classic Dr Who.

The Doctor Falls was not better. It was good, but had the ending with Starfu knocks it down a few points for lazy writing.

Why does it matter that 12 was barely in WEAT? 10 was barely in Blink. WEAT works for the horror aspect, bringing a form of Spare Parts to TV. It dabbled with interesting sci-fi concepts and was thought-provoking. I don't think it relied on the Simm reveal, and knowing he was in it (and knowing Cybermen were in it) didn't detract from it's quality. Call me retarded but it took me till he entered the room where Missy was hacking the computer to realise he was Razor.

No it wasn't. She was set up to be able to travel through space and time, and her appearing through Bill's tears was fine, but being able to pluck the mashed-up remains of bill from inside the Cyberman and restoring her to life, then being able to go back to the TARDIS (which the Pilot implied she couldn't do) is not fine at all. My Dad is a classic Doctor Who fan, as well as a NuWho one, and he seems to have good taste in episodes. When this bit happened he just said "What is going on..?"

The stuff with Bill is pretty good yes, but why do you think it's better than any of that sort of stuff in WEAT?

>/who/ presents:
DOCTOR WHO: SHIT TRIPS Vol. 2
- The Anthology -

>Are you a true fan of Doctor Who?
>Have you ever written down a sequence of words?

If the answer is yes or no, then you are ready to contribute a literary masterpiece to the second /who/ collection of original Doctor Who-based short fiction.

/who/ did it once. Now, we're gonna do it again! Yet another entry in an age-old tradition of p̶a̶c̶k̶a̶g̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶a̶n̶f̶i̶c̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶g̶e̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶g̶i̶v̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶m̶ ̶a̶n̶ ̶a̶i̶r̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶l̶e̶g̶i̶t̶i̶m̶a̶c̶y̶ / celebrating the magic of Who and the talent of a community.

There are no limits (except the story must be at least 1 word long, and preferably not in excess of 10,000, it's short fiction you fuck).

>- Can involve any Doctor(s), companion(s), side characters, spinoff characters and beyond, as your heart desires
>- Can be in any style, whether it's "legitimate writing", "pisstake", or "shitpost".
>- Can be about absolutely anything
>- The main focus is on good fun in the vein of the wiki, although serious entries are allowed. (If you're going to write smut, maybe approach it with a degree of levity)

Stuck for ideas? Try starting with your favourite TARDIS team (or for timeliness, 12/Bill “I'm a lesbian” Potts) and one of these authentic titles:
http://www.saberpunk.net/DoctorWho/DoctorWhoSerialGenerator.php
https://glyphobet.net/drwho
And free scenario prompts:
http://games.usvsth3m.com/drwho/

We are going to be starting an index on the wiki for the collection. Anyone can contribute, no signups/pitches required. If you have ideas, feel free to broadcast them.
The rest is self-explanatory. Format for uploading your work is up to you, as long as it can be conveniently copied across (and ideally don't spam long texts in /who/ directly). (Pastebin works well.)

BONUS: Anyone who wants to do cover art or "illustrations" is encouraged.

Why? It's not any crazier than stuff we've seen in other finales. Rose became a literal god in S1. And the tardis thing was before they saved her in the pilot tbf.

>but why do you think it's better than any of that sort of stuff in WEAT?
The best part of the Cybermen is the human element which basically all of the previous NuWho Cybermen besides Death In Heaven were missing. But nobody cared about Danny so it was shit. The horror is nice too but imo the human element is better so I enjoyed WEAT more.

rose literally fought the laws of time to come back and try and travel with him again. she definitely worshipped him m8.

Like Torchwood means anything. Moffat wrote Empty Child in 2005, then shit like Wedding of River Song in 2012 and dogshit like Death in Heaven in 2014

Because Pete's World saw the effects of the reality bomb, meaning she had to try and contact the Doctor somehow. It isn't like she just dimension hopped just to shag him again.

When they announced Moffat in 2008, I thought his Doctor Who would be GOAT. It was, for SERIES 5. Then he wrote absolute fucking dogshit and ran a shambles of a show for way too long.
>>
>>84876649
I think the ending of series 1 is a bit pants too. Being no worse than other finales doesn't make it good.

The exploration of Bill's humanity only goes so far. Most of the time it's just normal Bill, with an occasional shot of the Cyberman. It's not exploring the human element really. I feel WEAT explores this a lot better anyway - we see how they have to be quietened and their emotions repressed - you see they're normal people like Bill but slowly get "tamed" .

The rest of the Cybermen in the Doctor Falls are your generic cannon-fodder anyway.

I assume you're the guy saying TDF is better than WEAT?
>>
Tom Spilsbury, the editor of Doctor Who Magazine for twenty years, is leaving the job.

Why should we care? Because DWM is the main "official" connection between the show and the fans.
>>
>>84876838
he'll be bad, but not any worse than moffat and RTD. it'll just be a new sort of bad, which is exciting
>>
>>84876883
Clayton Hickman was editor before Tom, successfully keeping the magazine and brand alive throughout some of the wilderness and then the RTD revival. I'm sure Marcus Hearn will make DWM as good as Hickman and Spilsbury have done in the past. It's good to change things up.

Personally, I think mine would be some sort of long-term contract with Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

Alright so series 11 stuff is starting to happen at the Beeb

13 has been cast (of course by this point) no clue who it is but they ain't really famous, mostly done stage work and such. Likely won't be a TV reveal like with 12.

Some drafts of episode 1 are floating about for the set designs/costume designs. Episode was originally called 'Hotel Paradiso' but Chibbers changed it to 'Death in Paradiso' to poke fun at the Kris rumours. From what designs I have seen, it's a future looking resort. Seems in post regeneration haze the Doctor decides to 'go on vacation' to this resort and shenanigans unfold. New companion not yet cast.

Dark Water's probably the closest point of comparison - it's about a mother and child being haunted by the ghost of a drowned girl. The idea of a person, as opposed to a house or place, being haunted/ cursed is a pretty common trope in Asian horror (Shutter, Ringu, Ju-on) and so is the gaunt, pale ghost who died in tragic circumstances. There were a few hints and suggestions that Heather was suicidal - always wanting to "leave"/ "escape" etc, which evoked the kind of trauma ghosts represent.

Nope. I think the only track inspired by classic tracks is the actual Doctor Who theme.

And the 2014 version of the theme is the worst one ever made, if I'm honest.
>>
>>84878584
Maybe there's a copyright issue. I understand making new themes, but when your episode is heavily linked to a specific era of the show you'd think you'd do something with the music to reflect that.

Also middle eight WHEN
>>
>>84878634
>middle eight WHEN
I doubt it'll come back unless they start making the credits music play through the next time trailers again. The BBC don't like having the credits be long, which is the main reason the middle eight is gone from them, because both the Series 5 and Series 8 OSTs do actually have the middle eight in the theme rendition, you just never hear it on the show.

Ratings are never gonna hit the heights of the last Tennant specials. We are deluding ourselves to hope that.

5.5m average is a pretty respectable number for Spring/ Summer Saturday night TV dramas in the UK nowadays.

Hopefully, with good marketing and MOST IMPORTANTLY a Sunday evening time slot, viewing figures will increase to a very respectable 6m average for s11 in the UK. (Altho viewing figures will be shit in America, but nobody in the UK cares about American viewing figures anyway).

IMO the monks were a joke, a would-be finale villain stripped of all significance and obnoxiously placed in the middle of an otherwise average season.
Also, lets not forget about Star Whale pt2 (aka thin ice.)

Imo the first half of the season was mediocre at best. It felt as if the show couldn't decide whether it wanted to maintain its old-who roots or if it wanted to move in a new and "edgy" political direction.
Even though the second-half still had Trump jokes every episode, it was more consistent in its aesthetic and the "rules" which it was willing to follow/break. I just loved how the old master unironically pulls off a mask and no one blinks an eye, classic old-who move.

She had just as much depth as Clala did in her first year, and is just as good as the rest of the new series companions. >>
>>84879391
No not at all. In no way am I trying to imply that Clara's first season was better than Bill's. I think that Moffat fell into the same pitfalls with both characters. Rather than using their screentime to develop personalities, arks, or whatever, he plops them straight into the action and they become accessories to the Doctor as opposed to companions.
Ultimately this leads to a situation where the Doctor becomes more interesting through his ability to replace the mundane with fantasy (and have to deal with those consequences) but the companions suffer in terms of character-depth as a result.
However, I think that Bill's status as both gay and black do draw more attention to this sort of lazy-writing, as they become the pillars of our understanding as to who she is.

Bill has a natural curiosity. It's why she goes to the Doctor's lectures. She misses her mother, keeping her mother as an image in her mind. She desires connection and acceptance, which the Doctor gives. She has a trusting nature, but she's not extremely naive--she knew Missy was dangerous, and she reacted in anger at the betrayal in Lie of the Land. She questions a lot--even her statements are in the form of a question. She has faith in the Doctor, which isn't new for a companion, but she also knows when the faith has been broken, and reacts with anger at that. She's has flaws though, often making mistakes in moments of high emotional stress--she cursed the whole world for six months, and she was killed, all based on her making a snap statement . She has a lot of mental resilience (Lie of the Land and CyberBill proves that). She isn't shocked or scared by the unusual, proven by her burgeoning friendship with Nardole. Which is a difference from Clara--Clara is cute, but she's also slightly odd. There a smugness to her, a quick witted cleverness. Bill lacks Clara's guile, but replaces it with a open sincerity. Bill doesn't lie at all, (except when hiding), and quickly makes friends with everyone. That's why her death by Razor is so merciless--Bill is so honest that she openly made a friend of the weird alien dude called Razor...and got Cyberized for it. (Clara probably would have figured out Razor's lies a long time ago. Clara is a master of lies herself--she recognizes her own.) Bill never stood a chance.

I just wrote 1500+ words above about Bill, and I didn't even mention "black" or "gay" once.

>personable
>is wary of the dangers of life
>makes bad decisons under emotional pressure
>has faith in the Doctor, occasionally against her common sense
>is aware of the prejudices of her time, but isn't aware of her own prejudices toward the future and the past

Again, I've listed traits that have nothing to do with "black" or "gay."

Half of that is only evident in the Pilot, and the rest is mostly headcanon.

>Bill has a natural curiosity

This is a character trait. Well done. This is indeed a facet of the character's identity and personality.

>She misses her mother, keeping her mother as an image in her mind.

This is not really a character trait. The lack of confidence and security that comes from being an orphan is a character trait. Missing a dead person is just ...standard human behaviour.

>She desires connection and acceptance

Correct, as a result of being an orphan. Again, this is not capitalised beyond the first episode.

>She has a trusting nature, but she's not extremely naive

This is not a character trait. Neither is this:

>She has faith in the Doctor, which isn't new for a companion, but she also knows when the faith has been broken, and reacts with anger at that

This is just a person reacting to things. If your character trait is "she is sad, but also she is happy", then it's not a character trait. This is Bill in "plot device" mode.

>She's has flaws though, often making mistakes in moments of high emotional stress
>She has a lot of mental resilience

These essentially contradict each other. She showed no mental resilience when signing the world over to an alien race out of fear for a person she barely knew, dooming billions of people to tyranny.

>She isn't shocked or scared by the unusual

Sort of feeds back into the natural curiousity thing.

See, this is the problem. Instead of describing who she is, you've just described things she does, which happen to be the default reactions of standard human beings. You've written 1500 words on Bill Potts, about 100 of which were actually relevant, and the rest meaningless bullshit.

It's insane that we are still fighting this shit.

Net neutrality is important to me because the internet, as it exists today, is important to me. While the issue is much bigger than just one website, I believe reddit has always and will always fully personify the internet as a whole -- and here is how I feel about reddit:

I love reddit. I love its infrastructure. I love its ability to impact. I love its versatility. I love its intelligence. I love its silliness. I love how it represents the entire world from every walk of life. I love its mascot. I love the popcorn drama. I love its recurring characters. I love its photoshop battles. I love how it's constant. I love how it personifies the internet age. I love the fact that it is a vehicle that allows anyone on Earth the ability to share something with potentially the entire rest of the world. I love how every person is created equal when using that vehicle, regardless of age, race, gender, IQ or wealth. I love how a lot of these attributes could be said about the internet as a whole, but arguably not without reddit. I love when a recovered heroin addict mails life saving medication to people in need via /r/opiates. I love when a guy writes a story on his lunch break in response to a question on /r/askreddit which ultimately turns into a screenplay bought by Warner Bros. I love when a guy gets help in /r/favors from a stranger to write and revise his speech to a court judge in order to reduce his sentence, and later scores a job drawing and designing at reddit hq after he gets out 7 and a half years early. I love the armies of warmhearted people in /r/suicidewatch and the like who spend their free time trying and often succeeding in saving lives. I love the incredibly talented and witty users of /r/nfl, /r/nba, /r/baseball and more -- you are literally changing the landscape of professional sports. I love "France is Bacon" I love "today you, tomorrow me." I love "risk everything." I love reddit.

These aren't individual character traits though. They're necessary elements of the "companion" archetype. Almost every companion has some combination of these traits in some order.
Bill is literally just a generic companion crudely painted with the brush of 2017, used as plot device and emotional payoff.
>>
>>84880137
The difference is that the classic who didn't have the same focus on the companions. But nuwho tries to have drama and feeling and shit with those paper cutouts.

>>84880237
yeah but my balls, they itch
>>
>>84880112
The original charge I was dealing with was >>84879104 , which claimed that Bill was only "black and gay."

>>84880237
So what do you consider a non-generic companion?
>>
>>84880110
A group of autistic lunatics who literally hide in bushes so they can take photos of production and post them online for internet points
>>
tbqh rewatching the pilot, this is a fucking comfy episode and the relationship between bill and 12 here is top tier. I wish the rest of the series had this feel to it

One way people show you who they are is by how they react. Some people would react by crying. Some would just become depressed and give up. Some would decide to give in and join the Monks.

>She's has flaws though, often making mistakes in moments of high emotional stress
>She has a lot of mental resilience
>These essentially contradict each other. She showed no mental resilience when signing the world over to an alien race out of fear for a person she barely knew, dooming billions of people to tyranny

Not necessarily. Though I admit using "resistance to a psychic attack" as a character trait is flawed, that does show a strong self-image. More accurately, she knows who she is, and won't just change under peer pressure, or influence.

However, when she has to make a decision in a short amount of time, twice over, she messes up. That happenned enough for it to be a character trait.

I think you might have a point, though. Her orphan background doesn't come into focus too often.
>>
>>84879826
So Bill wouldn't recognise him, but also so the people in the ship wouldn't recognise him. I believe it's said at the start of The Doctor Falls that he tried his whole Series 3 plan, but they revolted, so he had to hide himself.

There are no "non-generic" companions. My point wasn't that Bill was a poor companion because she was generic, but rather that she in no way complicated the rules by which the companion "type" operates.

Davies used romantic tension and interest as a way in which to complicate the Doctor's relationship to his companions. It is because Rose was a romantic interest that the Doctor's platonic relationship with Donna is made significant and emotionally compelling.

Moffat on the other hand, as >>84879717 pointed out, tends to write female companions in a formulaic way. This works/doesn't work for various reasons that have been discussed already in the thread, but my point is that Bill has the least refinement of all in those terms. She is a standard, safe type with her lifestyle bolted on in order to appeal to a younger audience. I really wish that Moffat took more care in fleshing her out and making her a compelling character, as her finale would have been a lot more impactful.

I'm not going to make a webm of it, but watch the last half of the episode online somewhere. Note how in her scenes with the doctor, he is the one who does (nearly) all of the mental legwork, and how her role on-screen is to be a sponge for praise.

I didn't. Watch the episode. Maybe he doesn't use the word "gorgeous", but he uses faux-romantic language as a way of making her feel special. That's fine in and of itself, but it reads as patronizing in the episode.

Mundane, good person, naturally curious, wishes/learns to help people and take on the doctor's mission. Values the immaterial over the material.

Again, I'm not saying that these are bad things, but that they alone do not make a compelling character.

>One way people show you who they are is by how they react. Some people would react by crying. Some would just become depressed and give up. Some would decide to give in and join the Monks.

And as you pointed out, there's no consistency in her reactions, so her personality isn't communicated through them. If she's trusting but not trusting, if she's mentally strong but mentally weak - as and when the story demands it - her personality has been subordinated to the mechanisms of the plot. The key defining features of Bill's character seem just to have been "sort of ordinary" and "gay". I say this liking both Pearl Mackie and Bill better than either Amy or Clara - in the Pilot, I thought she had huge potential, it's just that over the next 11 episodes, she was relegated to the role of "person who reacts to things", and her orphan sub-plot turned out to be the set-up to the Monks' deus ex machina, and that's it. That being said, it was refreshing to have her react to things with something other than glib quippery and ironic commentary, which is what we got with Amy and Clara.

I don't know the term for it, but whatever it's called when people offer some weird, self-parodying meta-narrative for their own actions.

"Ok, um, well, so this is obviously -extremely- scary, so, I'll just, y'know, scream and run now?"

That's a hacky example of what I'm talking about, but - what the fuck am I talking about? What's the name for it? That sort of Whedonesque snark?
>>
>>84880962

Nah, you're full of shit. He's actually talking about himself.

That's some evidence for you. If you want to argue otherwise, watch it yourself and post the timecode.
>>
>you will never live in the timeline where Moffat's mom lived for another year or two and he didn't falter as a script editor from all the shit on his plate, resulting in the Monk trilogy being actually satisfying and Bill being more than just a series of identical coming out scenes.

I feel like that doesn't do justice to Moffat's formula, because it's actually much worse than that.

They're quirky and kooky, but not in any genuinely dysfunctional or threatening way - rather, in the sense that they're highly self-aware and "witty", constantly using irony and snark in the place of any sincere or authentic reaction, are what would charitably be called "feisty" or "sassy", in the sense that they generally respond to any comment, from friend or foe, with a smart-ass quip, and their default mode of interacting with the universe seems to be through flirting and innuendo. They're a hybrid mix of clueless and resourceful - in the sense that they'll be damselled into getting captured, then manage to kick-butt their way out of it thanks to their smarts.

Wait, did Moffat's mother die? When did this happen? Can't find anything on google about it.
