Roose Bolton's Morton's Fork

Roose Bolton is faced with a doozy of a dangerous one during the siege.

If Roose lets everybody stay as they are, they'll fragment even further into murderous factions and weaken the siege from within by picking each other off: Game Over.

If he sends the most dangerous out into the snow, they may side with Stannis or die: Game Over.

Either he's left with too few to defend the walls, or Stannis gains more numbers quite directly. If he keeps the worst with him and puts them on lockdown, his whole army can't be an effective defensive force against Stannis and the troublemakers may still try killing him and others: Game Over.

If he sends a mix of supporters and dangerous tools outside to fake surrender to Stannis, they may achieve something — or, more likely, get caught thanks to teeth-clenched teamwork not working: Game Over.

If he's found a way out of this by picking the snowdrifts and being creative with who he sent outside, it'll be fun to see.

All in all, general winter has not been kind to either him or Stannis by arriving when he did.

Jon (especially on the show) is an atrocious character, and nothing makes sense in his arc and he's plot armored up the ass, and destined to win in the end. Roose's is in a real no-win scenario. He isn't stuck in a logical fallacy. He is facing a problem with two objectives:

In order to stop Stannis, he needs to keep everyone together to man the walls and stave off a seige, but in order to stop his army from turning on him, he needs to separate them and remove the dangerous elements from the castle. He can't do both at once without some creative, out of the box thinking because the actions he needs to take to fulfill one objective work against the other objective. It's a Catch-22.

I feel lukewarm towards this theory. On one hand it would be a good explanation for Tywins hate for Aerys since that rape ultimately left his wife dead and him with a dwarf to raise. Dany=sauron is an interesting concept at the least, I'd say. Shows that when you picture people this or that way, they can be loved or hated while they'd get the opposite if pictured differently.

If Dorne has 50k, it's more than the Riverlands, that's not logical at all. The riverlands seems a bit bigger (maybe 10-20% bigger) and the climate is a hell of a lot better. Lots of uninhabited deserts in Dorne. Just watched the whole show for the first time and discovered that you guys were right about Dany, an absolute shit and the real villain of the show. My favorite character was Tywin, I was sad to see him go.

Show was very uneven sometimes. The big battles (Blackwater and the Bastards battle at the end of s6) were kind of choppy. The writing seriously deteriorated in seasons 5 and 6. Nevertheless couldn't stop watching.

There were a lot of situations where things weren't very well explained but I assume there were plausible explanations in the books. For example, why didn't the nobles just BTFO the high sparrow and say fuck the trial? Didn't make sense.

Another thing that didn't make sense most of the time was logistics. Countless times in the show you see people traveling without food or supplies across vast stretches of frozen forest, desert plain, grasslands, etc. Like how the the FUCK did the massive wildling encampment survive in the equivalent of greenland?? I recall them saying it was a force of 100,000. There is no way a group of that size could live in that environment.

I'm also confused as to why the Iron Bank plotline was never taken further. Shouldn't the Iron Bank be pretty pissed at this point?

I think the idea is that it's meant to be a story about a man who becomes so desperate and tragically wrong about his destiny he ends up destroying himself and his house in the attempt. A progression from honesty and duty driven to utter decimation due to his surroundings.

I wouldn't have minded it if they'd actually taken time to emphasise the utter calamity and hopelessness of Stannis's cause. Like rather than cheap bullshit like "half our army ran off", "20 good men etc" and we actually saw the cannibalism and the malnourished army, and the audience understood had to deal with the moral dilemma that he had to deal with; burn my only daughter or everyone dies, it would have been far more effective imo.
