One of my favourite things about season 1 is him essentially being Batman

People complain about the first season a lot, because it's more procedural and god forbid a show have procedural elements in this day and age, but S1 is honestly really good TV. How slowly the trust builds between Finch and Reese is a lot of fun to watch, and makes their relationship in later seasons a lot more meaningful.

It's why I hate it when you see 'skip lists' for PoI that say a good half of S1 is skippable. You'll miss so much good stuff if you don't watch all of S1.

I also liked Dominic. He has some great lines and he seemed so very much smarter than most of his crew.

I loved that he was apparently in the class finch taught when he saved Caleb. He quotes Finch on the infinity of Pi, and how every possibility lies within a simple circle. That even the big quiet kid at the back of the class could run the streets of new york.

The John and Carter thing seemed a little forced to me, but then he did seem practically infatuated with her for the first 3 seasons so upgrading it to a romantic interest wasn't that big of a stretch.

Root and Shaw's relationship was beautifully tragic though, I dont care what anybody says. It worked very well, and you cant really deny the chemistry Amy Acker and Sarah Shahi had. Fusco was up there for me too. He seemed kinda buffonish at times, but at others you would see the darkness underneath. Especially that scene where he strangles that HR guy after he finds out his kid is ok. You could see how the PoI team really changed his life and put him on the "mostly" good guy path

Samaritan was a lame villain. Where was the mral complexity? He murdered innocent people on a regular basis if they were just inconvenient. A good AI villain would basically be Samaritan, but merely interfere to cleverly manipulate these folks out of the way in order to achieve its ends. The villain part would consist of it wanting to create a world government and control everything, but in a way that would least cause friction and resistance to it. If it had just been slightly more patient and discreet, it could have become the immortal god emperor of civilization, but apparently it was too stupid to see that.

The Machine believed humans had free will and that they should control their own fates, Samaritan believed humanity was inherently flawed and needed a strong hand to guide it. You can make an argument for both.

It did cleverly manipulate folks out of the way to achieve it's ends, and it only ever killed people who were a threat to it or it's control. There was that one guy in S5 who it was trying to kill, because he was getting close to exposing something it didn't want exposed, I don't remember what it was. But when Team Machine figured out what it was, they went and disseminated it all across the internet, and since there were no secrets left for the guy to expose, Samaritan stopped targeting him. He wasn't an immediate threat anymore.

As for Samaritan needing to be more patient and discreet, you realize literally the only thing opposing it was Team Machine, right? Nobody else but a select few in the government knew it existed, and even they didn't grasp what it actually was. It would have been immortal god emperor of civilization, if there wasn't already another ASI opposing it right out the gate.

As to patience, Samaritan watched and waited for a year before doing anything large scale. Before hand it was insinuating itself into every facet of life so that it would be difficult to oppose it once it decided to start making its "corrections." Other major actions it took were all to either lure out Team Machine or try to get them to surrender.

bullshit, there were people killed left and right. it held any objective as being more valuable than life. off the top of my head it had several security guys murdered before they could murder the new asset chick, when they could easily have just been called off. Samaritan used killing for its efficiency, it was just a lazy solution to problems. It would be trivially easy for Samaritan to have used its abilities to manipulate without hardly ever killing anyone, to actually make itself the kind of AI that was both powerful, had vision, AND in fact embody the character and virtues that would make people want it to lead them into the next phase of civilization. Instead of actualizing this, it decided that secrecy and lies and murder would be it's first simple solution to practically everything. A better written show would have fucked with the protagonist's heads by showing them that it was in fact a good intentioned actor, who just wanted more power in order to help people achieve what they are capable of, to empower humanity as a partner through time, not to play with them to create order for order';s sake. Samaritan was presented to us as a powerful, yet flawed creature, cold logic with no heart or purpose. But if it had those things, it would still motivate the protagonists to fight to give humanity freedom from it's grasp, but they would have to struggle a lot more over it if Samaritan would not in fact have been dropping bodies just to make a point.
