People like it because it was a somewhat elegant solution to the limitations of television. Its difficult to include all the plot lines, and is also jarring to have characters disappear for a season, like Tywin did in Clash. So having Tywin at Harrenhall reconciles this in a rather tidy matter. i also think replacing Edric with Gendry was similar in this regard, maintaining the feelings of the source material with the limitations of live action tv.

Sansa as Jeyne Poole, however, is an example of this done wrong.
