Part of the reason that Walder was such a dick during the initial negotiations at the Twins was because he thought Robb was too inexperienced to win and because Ned was a prisoner, giving the Lannisters a huge advantage. Ned in the field changes that dynamic.

After reading chapter 31 of a feast for crows I'm convinced that elder brother was prince Rhaegar Targaryen now living as a hermit in penance.

He spins some falsehoods to cover his past identity but it pretty much gives the rundown as to what happened to Rhaegars corpse.

In the chaos of battle after he was struck the surrounding some men who witnessed him fall went straight for the rubies. robert was injured and had no respect for the man, but pure hatred. I highly doubt he'd give him the honour of cremation or burial. After seeing the men go for his valuables he'd be contempt at the prince being stripped of his possessions and left for carrion. He did the deed so all he'd care about is getting himself fixed up as he was too injured to chase after the remaining host that fled he charged ned with the duty.

So Rhaegar was believed dead, his rubies were sought after. after his rubies were claimed and the rest left to float down the river men turned to his armour. stripped him completely naked of his possessions and just let the water take his corpse.

He then washed up on the quiet isle where he now lives a new life as a hermit living in penance for the sins of his past life.

I really enjoyed the chapter.

I don't see it as a way to bring him back or anything. Rhaegar is dead. I see it as one of those little things that are added for texture and almost like an easter egg to be figured out but doesn't play or influence the story significantly. just there for added texture.

Similar to the lannister twins being targaryen bastards. do enough research and there's great evidence to support the theory but overall it doesn't play a significant role of the story, nor may ever be brought to light.

it's there for irony and added texture and it doesn't go any further than that. and it's really there only for those who do end up figuring it out but it really doesn't do anything else for the story other than that.

Just some irony. As sandor clegane / the hound is dead he still lives now reborn living a new life. The irony that it was once Rhaegar who found him, after taking a vow to never kill again nurses him to health and winds up defending the mans past to brienne despite what gregor had done to his children and wife.

I think it speaks volumes to the sad state the crowned prince was left in and now lives.

I agree though that there isn't much point to him being alive because technically he views himself as dead. Sure there is the possibility but I think it may kill what I enjoyed about the chapter. He's both dead and alive but the life of Rhaegar to him is dead. To me it sums up what happened to his corpse and what kind of man he was left as after all has been lost. The icing on the cake is that it's Rhaegar who finds the Hound. Honestly I'd prefer him to commit to his penance and stay uninvolved with the next generations Targaryens.

If there was contact I'd enjoy it more if it was way down the track. years and years from now as he is an old man.

yea it doesn't have any great significance but the birthing of the twins and parts of jaimes story has some influences from arthurian mythology.

Uther Pendragon / Uther Head Dragon / Uther Head of the Dragon glamours himself to appear as his enemy and sleeps with the enemies wife to conceive Arthur.

Theres other stuff that influences his story but I won't go into it.

I'll just say that it's there in the story for texture and irony. Beyond that you shouldn't get your hopes up.

The incest, Cersei and her children actually having a better claim than Robert to the throne. Cerseis and Joffreys madness that they'd inherit from their grandfather. The mad queens wildfire plot with the supply of wildfire from the mad kings wildfire plot.

The twins also represent the two sides of the coin the gods flip when siring Targaryens. Though the show is late on that matter in regards to Jaime he is clearly on a path of redemption and will do something heroic, most likely resulting in his death to clear the stain of his past.
