The Silence tried to create a makeshift TARDIS in Day of the Moon. When River Song killed them all, it auto-transported through time, ending up in The Lodger. I can't remember the exact quote but The Doctor basically recognises it and confirms the connection in DotM.

1: people have been listening to stories about them in all of nuWho, but that gets you only so far and it builds up a lot opf frustration. Today's audiences need to see, they are not comfortable imagining it and no one is gonna go watch the old series (sad but reality is a bitch).

2. We need a multi-season enemy that is constantly in the background not just occasionally appearing like the Daleks or Cybermen. Motw episodes are fine and the series arches are fine, but we have exhausted a lot of ideas (hence the change in writers) and we need an anchor that is constantly there. Think of the Shadows in B5.

That's another thing I'm annoyed at.
RTD, for all his faults, made the Time War seem worse than hell, Time Lords gone mad against Daleks fulfilling Prime Directive. Like you said, the Nightmare Child etc, people using time travel so much it cause paradoxes so big they timelocked it, but not before the damage had been done, the doctor realising that killing everyone was a better alternative to letting any of the races be free.

And then Moffat showed the Time Lords as afraid in the 50th. Like a big Dindu nothin, just the Daleks on warpath.
McGann's minisode conveyed the Time Lords were just as bad, but the episode itself, that the Time Lords were the ones who needed saving, not the rest of the universe from both of them.

I prefer the idea that the Time War became so big that it span out of control, forcing the Time Lords to commit more and more atrocities just to maintain an equal footing against the Daleks, who presumably were engineering atrocities right from the start. Killing everyone involved in it became the only possible solution.

I feel that the perfect compromise - because due to the points raised here >>81739935 I think the Time Lords returning would have been inevitable - would be for The Doctor to have saved a small group of Time Lords. Realising he can't undo the mass genocide he'd caused, but he could at least atone for it in some small way (retread of the whole Fires of Pompeii climax, but on a much bigger/more personal scale). Although he was unable to undo the mass extinction at the end of the Time War, he could rest easy knowing that small band of Time Lords are now able to find a planet and begin repopulating and rebuilding a new Gallifreyan society.

We still don't know what happened to President Romana - is she dead? Imprisoned? Exiled somewhere? Lolno, Clara in a diner is more important.

People seem to shit on Torchwood's premises but they ignore how wonderful the characters are. They're all brilliant to me.
