Honestly, I thought this was really good. The acting was good, a little over the top at times, there were no major plot holes or anything of the like, the script was good and the structure of going back and forth between Clay and Hannah worked well. It was the first TV show in a long while which actually made me feel for the characters (since I'm a beta robot I could see myself as Clay).

I found it interesting that while Clay was socially awkward, he was stupid. He was fairly intelligent, knew his shit at school and tutored people. It was also interesting to see a Dad, Clay's Dad, represented as level headed, understanding and quite intelligent himself.

A lot of TV and movies likes to shit all over dads and make them incompetent pieces of shit. 13 reasons didn't do that.

I've gone over my issues with 13 reasons before, so, this one time, I'm saying something positive about it.

Hannah is just a bad character to focus on. I understand she has severe depression but she treats everyone like shit and wonders why she gets shit thrown back. And also makes a lot of real bad decisions, some are inexcusable.

Im not sure if this was on purpose (make her flawed) or if the writers thought they were making some cute quirky character they wish they were in highschool.

They have this weird social studies class, with brown paper bags. They write their names on their bag, and people are supposed to put nice things in the bags. Hannah has been recieving drawings of bunnies. The Asian dude steals from it two different times, then she catches him on the third. She writes him a letter, explaining how that made her feel.

He reads the letter, and stops. Never does it again, never does anything to her again. She accuses him of crumbling up the letter and throwing it away. It turns out he kept the letter the entire time, listened, genuinely felt bad, and is one of the few people that tell the truth during the interviews at the end.

Dude didn't deserve to be on that list anymore than Clay did.

After you find out more about the Asian guy, you find out he's about as awkward as Clay. He doesn't know how to deal with his emotions, or the emotions of others, but he's attractive and talented, so he can fake it easier than a guy like Clay. But he's just as bad off when dealing with an emotional wreck like Hannah. She embarrassed him and he handled it badly, but in the way a small child would. It was petty, and childish, but not malicious, and he stopped and seemed to honestly care about what she'd written. Even before her suicide he kept her letter. He didn't need to be guilted into being a better person, or doing nice things. The truth is he could have been the nice thing in Hannah's life if she hadn't freaked on him and humiliated him because...

Well, I'm not sure. She does the same thing to Clay at the party. Freaks on Clay like he's a combination of every guy that ever fucked with her. She seemed to do the same thing to the Asian guy at lunch. Mental issues she needed taken care of.
