This is the "awful" CGI that people are complaining about.
Keep in mind that the bottom image was taken on a cell phone in the theater.
>>
Her face looks thinner, but not fat-free thinner, more like it's been crushed in a vice thinner.

No, people are mostly fine with Leia.

THIS is the awful CGI that people are talking about.

nigga I can tell it's CG from the catalog thumbnail
>>
>>77355617
That could have something to do with the angle of the shots.

It's just a tad too smooth. Other than that, I'm impressed.
>>

>>

>>
>>77355678
OP here. I genuinely couldn't tell in theaters, especially since her face is a bit thinner. I just thought they cast a girl who looked a lot like young Carrie Fisher.
>>
>>77355640
It helps that Peter Cushing has such a sharp defined face. That's easier to make in CGI than soft roundness.
>>
>>77355679
In ten, maybe fifteen years we will see kińó with prime Marlon Brando, Christopher Lee and both Gish sister.
>>
>>77355731
The proper way to do these kind of effects is to hire someone who looks like the actor, apply makeup to help, then use CGI to flesh it all out.

Nice joke, bottom is a cutscene from Battlefront.
>>
>>77355731
Tarkin was leagues worse than her.
Not a single movement out of place. His posture was perfect, and he performed every single gesture and face emoting with machine-like precision, being exactly at the distance from the camera he needed to be, in the millimiter he needed to be.
When he was standing still, he was completely and utterly immoble.

He look very, very clearly fake. He didn't move like a human. He wasn't filmed like a human.
>>
>>77355595
That's fantastic, and they show her so briefly. Who cares?
>>
>>77355858
Chuckle turns to hmmmmm....ok...
So I guess now I have to see the movie for myself.
>>
Yes.

As a still it looks pretty good.

Seeing it live was fucking completely terrible.

Tarkins was a level above Leia, but Leia legit ruined the Entire movie for me, looked literally like a video game.
Very bad
Surprised they let it in.
>>
>>77355595
It's the epitome of the uncanny valley. It's so so damn close to being right, but just enough is off that your brain rejects it entirely.
>>
Not a star trek fag but looks good to me. But I guess in HD it could be worse.

This is why you don't go back in a movie saga timeline, all the actors are old and dead. You have to go back further.

>you will never see the true story of how the clone wars forced anakin to do harder and harder things while obi wan tried to stop him

>you will never learn why it is Vader is obsessed with keeping the empire together now it's just all 'lol dark side'

Like Vader is legit disgusted with rebels but they never explain why.

Honestly it's not that bad if it's just one or two shots, but I hear Tarkin is in it quite a bit and that should be worrisome.
>>
>>77355595
I have a feeling in about 10 years, we will look back on this kind of CGI the same way we look back at early video games FMV. This is going to be pure nightmare fuel in a few years

>>
>>77356185
Its incredibly brief. They show Leia from behind and tell her "We've just received a transmission" or something, and one of the men asks "What is it?" and she turns around and says "Hope."
They show her face for like five seconds.
>>
>>77355640
yep, they really didn't need to show him so many times and directly showing his face.
>>
>>77355595
WHY THE LONG FACE LEIA?
>>
>>77356246
Did they grab a sound clip of young Fisher saying that? The idea of seeing these incredibly accurate recreations then hearing the wrong voice come out is disturbing to me.
>>
>>77356192
Yeah, but then it's easier to make a 70 year old man into a 45 year old than an old woman into a 20 year old, I mean Carrie Fisher wasn't even there unlike Kirk Douglas.

>>
>>77356408
Yes and no. Pretty sure they used old stock footage they never used and made them look better.
>>
>>77356408
Nah they're just archive footage. Not really a point in using CG when there's only like a day between the battles.
>>
The very fact that Disney chose to cgi a white woman rather than make a bold casting choice with a young PoC woman trying to start her career is what we're talking about when we say systemic racism is real.

Princess Leia isn't even real why does it matter that she's white? There are so many young and. daring African American actresses like Leslie Jones and John Boyega that Disney's "progressive" producers could have picked that it shows how far Disney is willing to go to leave black women out of the Star Wars universe. It's appalling and hopefully the next movie can correct this by casting more young and vibrant PoC in future main character roles. I dream of a day when young black children can see a black Luke Skywalker defeat a Latino Darth Vader who used to be Asian Anakin. Why does the race even matter if the story is good? It doesn't.
>>
Don't they even wait until the original actor is dead now?
>>
>>77356317

the close up should've never happened.

I've already imagined it. There will be a new landed gentry that just live off of the fact that they're the children or grandchildren of one of the more famous actors from history and thus owning the copyright by birth. The ones who respect their ancestors will only let their likeness be used in movies. The ones who don't give a shit will lend them to commercials and home-AR set-ups. The ones who truly don't give a fuck will be selling Official James Dean Fuck-bots, directly whoring out their ancestor.

The few actors who won't be whored out by their descendants will have bootleg versions on the internet, made by the same kind of people who do porn fakes of actresses today, ready to be downloaded and 3D-printed or installed as a skin for your AR-module.
>>
>>77357264

Cams primarily function is to be sold on the black market. Basically, you record the latest hollywood movie, then you take that recording and burn it to a DVD and then you sell it for a dollar on the street. The people buying the movie won't know that they're buying a shitty cam rip and can't really complain because it's illegal to buy pirated goods in many places and so on.

For online pirates, cam rips can in some cases actually be quite good. The Warcraft cam rip for example was comparable to watching it on a shitty streaming site. And sometimes it's fun to download a cam rip just to check something about the plot or dialog after you've seen the movie.

The only reason it's working better now is because the IP is stronger. It has nothing to do with the quality of the movies being different.

Fuck off you progressive twat. "Looks like a PS2 game" worked. There was nothing wrong with it and there's no reason to "get past" it. Traditions matter.

recreating someone's voice is something we're starting to be able to do actually. Basically, you can use deep learning to train a computer to analyze the wave form of various sounds and then get then to associate certain patterns with certain words and also the different ways that the same words can pronounced. Just like how we can train an AI to tell the difference between different breeds of dogs, we can train an AI to recognize various ways of saying any specific word.

But we're sitll in the uncanney valley with voices and they still sound just ever so slightly off. But if you take someone who has been in countless interviews and done dozens upons dozens of movies and TV shows, you can probably very similar sounding voices.
>>
>>77357787

That's fine and all but it should have been what the prequels were. This ends up feeling like a weird 'we know the prequels suck and wanna fill these gaps' and looks a little petty.

Although I jumped ship from star wars long ago and I don't know if they could do anything that would make me bother watching the new ones. I'm too spiteful.

I think it's easier to just find someone who has a similar pitch and can imitate the voice. I've heard loads of impersonations, usually comical, where someone imitates someone else's voice. Sometimes these imitations are uncanny, if the pitch is right, and the impersonator knows how to imitate the speech patterns.

Recently here in Spain there was this story where a radio station called the spanish president pretending to be a regional politician, and they got this guys voice so right that they actually put them through, and they were trolling the president for a bit until they admitted it was a joke so they wouldn't get into trouble.

You just need the look-alike to play the part, put the CGI face on him, and dub him with the impersonator's voice.

The porn companies are the ones that will use their influence and money to make sure film studious and their corporate owners don't get the rights of actors who worked on their movies. Because then they'd have to fight with movie companies over the rights to use them for their pornos. Whereas if the grandchildren of the actor owns the rights and rents them out then both the movie companies and the porn companies can get their fill.

People will look back on how we release porn parodies to coincide with the new Batman movie or whatever and laugh at how we could stand jerking it to some plastic porn actress wearing a wig instead of a perfect copy of the actress who's in the movie.

My beef was mainly with the voice and the acting. He looked like Peter Cushing, but he didn't act, emote or speak like Peter Cushing. When he says the line
>You may fire when ready.
Which is an obvious reference to Ep. IV, it was VERY noticeably different.

Also the facial expressions he shows were NOTHING like the original Tarkin. They ware WAY over the top, it was a cartoon of Tarkin.

I think these issues are the key why this shit won't ever work (not saying it won't catch on, they will just look shitty and fake, like cheap CGI does). You can immediately tell it's not the real thing, no matter how realistic the image and sound is.
>>
>>77356317

It's the same weirdness you always get with this...plastic skin. Dunno why.
>>
>>77355595
I think the decision to use CGI was a cynical one, to get your average movie goer with a high tolerance for CGI weirdness to say 'OMG how did they get the original princess leia?' and therefore spread the word about the movie.

I'd have preferred it if they had just used a similar looking actress and just made us suspend our disbelief.
