"Cosmos" with Neil DeGrasse Tyson got canceled due to low ratings.
Was it because people are too stupid to watch a show about science or too racist to watch a show with a black scientist?
mostly stupid people. only people on /tv/ or 4ch in general are racist enough yet smart enough to care about this show.
but the animated sections were unbearable. but i still get all my students to watch it. it's informative and well-produced.
i still prefer connections.
We had one guy look at the universe already.
What more can this guy tell us about space?
That's what fatsos or uggos say when they can't get laid.
Neil is a douche.
Because Sagan was better.
He didn't condescend.
I watched two episodes and both of them were about 25% "here's cool scientific things that people discovered" and 75% "here's ways that those IGNORANT CHRISTIANS oppressed and murdered brave scientists 500 years ago"
It was pretty fucking annoying how much they harped on it.
Because its audience would rather shitpost on reddit, i bet most would even own a TV.
And pic related show is better.
i watched the first 5 or so on netflix. felt very preachy, like it was trying to convince backwards people that science is important and real. cg planets and space shit loses its impact when there's so much of it. animated sequences felt cheap.
all in all, i don't know why they thought they needed another season. jeasus made everything and that's all anyone needs to know.
Nobody cared look at the history channel or the discovery Channel. It's all reality TV crap. They should have gotten a superhero to be the host of the show, or an actual scientist.
He does not have the same charm as Carl Sagan and the Hollywood effects were boring, if you are gonna do a scientific documentary then really get into the meat of it.
Don't just skim it on the surface in fear of people getting bored. If you are worried about that audience then why the fuck would you make another cosmos.
The show wasn't very interesting. The topics were always too general, skipping from one broad summary to another and answering no question about science that had not already been explored pre-highscool
Science specials on PBS were much more interesting and informative by comparison. Basically, Cosmos was a shallow and pointless reiteration of well-known trivia
Daily reminder that this was actually put into a "science" documentary
It almost seems unusual that he was a prominent atheist yet had absolutely no "FUCKING CHRISTFAGS GET OUT REEEEEEEeeeee" chip on his shoulder
It was because we got butthurt finding out that all the real good science was done by women and Muslims and that we'd all still be living in filthy caves if it weren't were the two bitchiest groups of people in human history inventing literally everything from shampoo to space travel.
That's probably why that Cockmed kid got deported, for being smarter than NASA.
Resurrect Carl Sagan and I'll watch a new Cosmos with him hosting. Le Reddit black science man annoys the fuck out of me. They could have gotten pretty much any other meme astrophysicist to do it and I would have watched it.
the new cosmos was really bad, not rhetorically persuasive and comforting like the carl sagan one but overly didactic and sentimental like a boomy exhibit at a noisy science museum that smells of peanut butter sandwiches and mexicans
Is it weird that I would totally watch the shit out of this?
Like, just an hour of some group of hack film school students adding entirely out-of-place effects to the stereotypically classy BBC documentary.
>those "Middle-Earth Sopranos"
Fag/got/s on suicide watch!
British science man is best science man.
>In the year 415 of the Common Era, a mob led by Cyril of Alexandria raided and destroyed the greatest library of the ancient world. The library had been ransacked several times before then, but it was this attack that effectively ended research there.
>What will happen the next time the mob comes?
>Brian Cox looks wistfully skyward and muses about the possibility of discovering intelligent alien life during his brief time living here within the greater cosmos
>In the background, a man wearing nothing but a speedo, an American flag, and some Ray-Bans makes ayylmaos explode in a flurry of clearly fake punches, and the scene ends with a massive, beautiful suplex
>Fun sci-fi/space film comes out
>Takes it upon himself to point out inaccuracies in fictional films, even though the films themselves get people interested in space exploration.
Glad his shit got cancelled.
it was too dumbed down
always like "dude whoa black holes how mindblowing"
the original cosmos actually talked about the history and scientists involved and how they discovered amazing things
NOW THAT REALLY SUCKS
The Universe on the whole is pretty dull, it's just a massive game of pool. Only autistic peeps care about teh magical universe that will save us all from teh religion by becoming it's own religion
I did not even know he had a show. only an idiot would dvr thrones since its basically the water cooler conversation show (I know few people who don't like it but still watch it to have something to talk about)
>He doesn't watch BBC's top tier science documentaries.
More likely because they expected a show about science and not "Why Christianity is Evil, and also why Female Scientists and Global Warming are important: The Show".
They aimed hard for the Reddit-crowd and alienated everyone else.
Oh come on.
We're not exactly expecting a damn tv show to be at the forefront of groundbreaking science are we? It's a tv show.
Thought it broke things down pretty well for the normal person who doesn't care about science. The only negative was that it at times became a bit preachy and that it wasn't as good as the original.
>They still use the acronyms BBC
>britbongs are literally keks
how's Jamal doing senpai
Yeah but autists invented the refrigerator which is why the beer in my hand is cold right now, and I like cold beer.
Fuck I should star in my own science documentary.
I mean compared to the science docs the BBC produces it was surface level shit. To be fair that's probably why it got so much more views, and I imagine they dumbed it down quite a bit to draw in more viewership.
Probably because NDT is an insufferable excuse for a human being and Cosmos is a terrible excuse for a science show about space when in reality it was an over produced headache filled with "b-b-but christians" everywhere
>Better than anything
Britbong holocaust now.
Americans think everything British is classy.
Us mainland-Yuropeans know the truth tho.
When the Catholic Church put Galileo on trial, he testified that he was no heretic - he believed wholly in God and the heliocentric model was merely his observation of Biblical creation.
People who cite him today act like he went "lol you christfags are mad at how enlightened I am"
Only problem is that they completely skipped over the fact that Giordanno Bruno wasn't burned because "Muh anti-science", he was burned because he was a crazy as fuck cult leader that was also an astronomer
>He's actually bro-tier as fuck
So you don't know that most of his colleagues consider him a bore and a dullard and he usually eats lunch alone because no one wants to sit with him, right?
He's a douchebag. When I went to Cornell my physics professor would talk about how Carl and Neil were friends when Neil was young and then Neil slowly started to annoy Carl more and more until Carl would only accept his phone calls if Neil promised to only talk about astro.
How hard was it to make a Science Documentary that focuses on science rather than shoe-horning in you Reddit politics?
Brian Greene did it.
Michio Kaku did it.
Countless other scientists on television have done it.
All of them would have been better hosts than NDT.
Why couldn't that happen with this?
Why did they make this such a wasted opportunity?
No one says you have to be religious
Just don't be a "hurr durr I'm so enlightened" fedora tipper
I'm an atheist, but I recognize the Catholic Church for preserving many ancient texts and being one of the few stable centers of education and medicine during the Middle Ages along with being the largest patron of the arts in history.
Tell us which country you're from so I can tell you which war we beat you in.
That's some street knowledge right fucking there AND trips.
When it became cool to not be on Reddit.
>tfw raised Catholic and will defend all you Godless heathens against the Muslim hordes because it's the right thing to do
No need to thank us, God will welcome us into Heaven which is thanks enough.
When the average age of users on 4chan went from 14 to 25, and most of the userbase grew up and stopped being faggoty atheist children that care about making their parents mad.
Around the same time people stopped saying "Video games should be banned because they are devil worshiping murder simulators" and started saying "Video games should be banned because they are misogynistic and full of white privilege"
>Carl Sagan burning in Hell
Its the closest they can come to killing the idea that the literature represents. In some cases they actually succeed. It pisses me off too, literature isn't science, its not something that still exists if the knowledge is destroyed: once its gone, its gone forever.
>durrrr hurrrr, people are only religious on the Internet to be contrarian!
This is such horse-shit.
So then by your logic, 4chan never had any ACTUAL atheists on it either? They were just pretending to be contrarian?
ah, good ol' Cox
one of my physics professors creamed her panties every time he was mentioned
and she always found ways to mention him in her lectures and/or slides
she was pretty hot as well, so there's that
We did declare war, but then didn't do anything.
We beat you literally without even trying.
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
>Euler, Newton, Bacon all prominent Christian theologians
>For a thousand years Christian monasticism was Europe's intellectual foundation because members of the clergy and aristocracy were the only people with enough free time to actually ponder philosophy and science
>Today's """popular""" """science""" shows paint Christians of the past as evil, anti-scientific persecutors because they're butthurt at Southern Baptists
most space documentaries are shit and refuse to go into anything complicated for fear of scaring off stupid or uninterested people, so what we're left with is hundreds of documentaries that cover the same simple bullshit like "black hole has strong gravity so strong it trap light"
Outside of the context of the Internet, a VERY common life experience for educated Westerners is to grow up in a nominally religious environment, reject it in it's entirety in their mid to late teens and become outspoken atheists, then become nominally religious again as they age, even if they just end up as moderate agnostics.
Fear of death might play a part in this but I think a lot of it is that in any culture, in any place, in any time, no one ever has a greater overestimation of their own wisdom than a fucking teenager.
It's like having a black doctor, I will never put my life in their hands.
I wouldn't even go to a black dermatologist....
sorry I'm not american I don't what this rattlebone meme is even supposed to mean
that's the best part, i'm not sure why i like it so much but it's hilarious to me.
same with the live thread for BrBa's BON FIRE scene, it was just people flipping out.
Cold weather and cold people are driving many of the """refugees""" out, so right now I am enjoying life here actually.
when reddit fedora atheists reared their ugly bloated heads
Shame... I enjoyed the shit out of this show...
Guess this is what happens when Fox gets ahold of good things
>More likely because they expected a show about science and not "Why Christianity is Evil, and also why Female Scientists and Global Warming are important: The Show".
Gotta agree with this.
becuase theres this thing called education that already existed for his purpose.
all the fedoras in this thread are fucking pitiful and I want them to leave .
>Middle Earth Sopranos
Fuck you too Neil you fucking pleb
>Was it because people are too stupid to watch a show about science
No, it's because NDGT is the personification of the reddit/fedora/look what a nerd I am you guys, I'm such a nerd movements.
>anime shit has to shoehorn retardedly big weapons into everything
Gee I wonder who could be behind this colonnade.
Boring as shit. Wasnt about outer space, rather than scientific things that are not that interesting.
Its on netflix. I saw the first episode, read the rest of synopsis and decided to pass.
Science was never pop culture in any society.
boo hoo youre a boring little faggot with no personality, so you made FACTS your religion.
>not putting the best tv scientist back on the air
>Was it because people are too stupid to watch a show about science or too racist to watch a show with a black scientist?
maybe people just didn't care?
maybe being reddit's demi god doesn't mean that you get good tv ratings, right? nope, it's either one of your two suggestions, nothing else.
Thank you father, every post will earn you 100 years off your stay in Purgatory. Just another 900 million years to go. Keep it up!
It's never been cool to be religious. Labeling yourself an atheist however groups you with one of the most insufferable groups of people on the world. You don't have to be outspoken about your lack of belief, hell, 15 years ago it was considered uncivilized and rude to bring up politics or religion unless asked.
>The series loosely follows the same thirteen-episode format and storytelling approach that the original Cosmos used, including elements such as the "Ship of the Imagination" and the "Cosmic Calendar", but features information updated since the 1980 series along with extensive computer-generated graphics and animation footage augmenting the narration
it didnt get canceled, it was always going to be 13 eps and only 13 eps you stupid fucks take the bait
Enjoy your slow death Muslim scum.
The parts where he overly criticized religion as being an evil force that only held back scientific advancement was too far to me.
I'm agnostic but I'm not stupid enough to think that religion has only ever done bad in this world.
That's the thing, he's not actually a scientist. A scientist needs to have a paper published in a peer reviewed journal. NGD got to where he was as an activist for science, then sat on a panel of his peers because of the popularity, and then he became a media personality after the pluto thing. He has really not accomplished anything of value ironically.
not really, most of the people who were educated back in those days and prior were clergy members.
in fact, by definition science was created to work in tandem with religion. Science can't be used to disprove religion.
Is this one of those threads?
People care more about shit like the kardashians than science.
Such a sad world to live in, also this cosmos was cool and the black science man is a bro but is nowhere near as good show as the original cosmos was.
>science was created to work in tandem with religion
it was created to study nature
it worked "in tandem" with religion because the church was so pervasive and held power over people
for example, the reason it took so long for astronomers to work out that the earth orbited the sun was because most people were sure the earth must be at the center (a religious idea) and they kept coming up with theories to explain their observations keeping the earth as the center of the solar system
there were an estimated 10 times more bishops and vicors as scientist and any other group.
science was created to study the physical and natural world. Due to this, science can never be used to disprove the supernatural.
>science was created to study the physical and natural world. Due to this, science can never be used to disprove the supernatural.
>god flooded the earth and 2 of each animal survived
disproved by science
>man was created 6000 years ago
disproved by science
>all celestial bodies were created days before man was create
disproved by science
If you were anything other than a science fanboy redditor you'd know that science can't prove or disprove anything with 100% certainty
if you ever get to upper levels of academia you can tell who are the better scientist by who responds like,"its our best guess as of now".
You will also run into instances were a mans entire lifetime of work is invalidated in an instance and his world comes crumbling around him.
>implying that him being a degenerate is a bad thing
>implying the Catholic Church isn't the Church of Satan
>"its our best guess as of now"
that's generally when there's little evidence for a new theory
Humans being more than 6000 years old would not be refereed to as "our best guess as of now"
Kill yourself. Worthless cuckold degree holders with 0 effort put into actual science is what group you belong to. Fuck all of you faggot religious cucks bending over backwards to your religious leaders while they have their with children. You're trash, subhuman garbage. You will never be half the man I am both physically or mentally. Tip that fedora you cocksucking retarded piece of shit.
>refused to talk about half A presses, syncing speeds, aligned QPUs, and Scuttlebug jamborees
D R O P P E D
Hipsters. Always hipsters.
It's really the only consistent on this website. (With the exception of footfags)
If the mainstream internet opinion was hardcore nazism/conservative capitalism, I would bet my life on /pol/ being filled to the brim with neckbearded socialist fat dudes talking about the greatness of feminism and equality.
>i just wanted to learn about science
Read a bookz
I just don't understand video gamesters or whatever the fuck these spergs call themselves.
Sagan had respect for the creation myths as attempts to understand the Universe. That's why everyone liked him.
Nobody finds smirking arrogance likeable.
Reading about the Voyager spacecraft and Sagan's vision of mankind reaching the stars always chokes me up.
>Afterall I did this for twelve straight hours
This nigga held Mario walking in the same spot for twelve fucking hours. What the fucking fuck?
