Here's another good illustration of the point about the planets in TFA. Takodana might as well have just been called Planet Lake-and-Some-Trees. It's got some nice on-location photography, but nothing about it is nearly exotic or interesting enough to justify its existence as a prominent locale in a $200 million Star Wars feature film released in the year 2015. It looks and feels basically just like Earth.

And Kashyyyk is just one of NINE new, unique, imaginative planetary locations which appeared in just Revenge of the Sith alone (not counting Coruscant, Naboo, and Tatooine, which appeared in previous films). And this was a $113 million movie that came out in 2005. Again, compare that to the $200 million that it took to make The Force Awakens in 2015. Given these facts, the enormous deficit in visual inventiveness between the two films is both astounding and disappointing.

And it's not like this is due to a lack of ability on J.J.'s part. He's perfectly capable of conceiving and bringing to life the kind of weirdly beautiful alien environments which define a series like Star Wars. He accomplished this wonderfully at the beginning of Star Trek Into Darkness. That's the kind of thing I was hoping to see in this movie. Unfortunately, I just don't think that anything quite so quirky and off-the-wall was allowed within the seemingly narrow mandate Disney gave to J.J.

In Phantom Menace, Jar Jar steps on a piece of shit and it's insanely popular.

There's an immense amount of debate around Jar Jar getting shit on his foot. People have debated this for over a decade. Why does the shit-joke fascinate, while Abram's "powerful message of faith(?)" draws shrugs? The simple fact is that the shit-joke is extremely well-crafted. Lucas is so slick that people don't realize the full extent of the joke, even though it's burrowed into their psyches:

The part where Jar Jar actually steps on the shit is just the setup. The punchline comes at the end of the film, when Jar Jar steps on a corpse and it 'springs to life', beginning to fire randomly. The landscape shots are fine but the CGI looks fucking terrible on all of the characters. That takes you out of the movie when you have entire sequences of nothing but CGI.

If you think there is not a disconnect for the audience when you place CGI soldiers right next to human actors close-up then...dude you're in deep. It's discrete and glaring. It takes you out of the movie.

There are countless examples of the direction of these movies just fumbling the ball when it comes to visual effects.

It's not that he used CGI. Plenty of movies used it before the technology was even mastered. The problem is he used CGI without care to the main rule of ALL visual effects: The audience should believe it.

The illusion wasn't broken looking back in hindsight. This is shit I noticed in theaters just like the Rock in the Mummy, the vampires in Blade 2, Spider-man's web-slinging in the original, etc.. Those other films at least had brief moments of those incongruities.

The prequels are LITTERED with them. The movie is built around them. It's their lifeblood and, sadly, only part of the reason so many people were disappointed.

But when you finish trying to pretend the visuals weren't bad you can make a new thread trying to force the idea that the characters and plot were good as well.

You can recognize moments in the OT were George's subpar writing and directing comes into play, but he had people to help him rinse out most of the shit. Several of the actors improvised their lines were George's original dialogue was cheese overload.
